Especially when he's elevating and Matthews has been fading. It's good to see him put the team on his back like that.

I think you might have to go back to the Marner, JT, ROR line.
I would take JT out and put Calle there and that’s a really good shut down line that can also score.

Would leave JT with Kerfoot/Lafferty or even try Kampf at C with JT being LW.

Let AM with Bunting and Willie.

Leave Acciari and ZAR on the fourth line with whoever left from JT’s line

Leafs would be fighting for a playoff spot without Marner on this team. Marner is the MVP of the Leafs this year. #2 is Samsonov.
Yes and in my opinion I also believe he was the mvp last year. He was the number one player in the world for a few months but then finished first place. He was also 75% of the assists that led auston to a 60 goal season not taking away from auston, so marner haters don't come for me. He truly is the engine and does nearly every job and this team wouldn't be half as good without him and the ppl who'd had career year with him wouldn't have it. Wish he was shown more appreciation from the league but hes a "undersized" winger and playmaker. I truly believe hes gon a help pave the way to make the league realize that now playmakers are becoming more important than the center(don't come for me) bc of their 2 way game where they can usually score and make open chances. We saw that yesterday. Auston can score but he doesnt get the puck or open his own lane. But marner can do both so hes not reliant on a playmaker to come.

Love the post game interview with Marner yesterday… yeah, I’m not getting traded tomorrow.
I know he meant nothing by it and he's a little dim but he came across a little cold there. Should have shown a little compassion for his teammates who would definitely have concerns.

It's posts like this that make me say that while Marner is a fantastic player, he is overrated by some people here. He did have a great year but based on voting for the Hart and Ted Lindsay awards, I'll say that you're in a very small minority here and I'll just leave it at that.

Fair point, I completely agree and thought the same as soon as I heard he said that. That said, Marner seems to be the quintessential rink rat who's lived, breathed and shat hockey since the day he was born so it's understandable that he's a genius on the ice but off the ice, not so much. So while I often cringe at what comes out of his mouth, all is forgiven as long as he plays the best hockey of his life in these coming playoffs. I'm also pretty sure his teammates know all this so nobody's pissed at him or anything so no harm done.

Marner didn't get a single Hart trophy vote, while Matthews had the most by a wide margin with over 1600....and you think Marner was last year's Leaf MVP?

Yeah it's a problem. You train th÷se kids since they were toddlers to play a sport or act or whatever and it's all they ever do and don't know how to do anything else. Getting to the rrL world is hard enough for normal ppl, so when someone who knows nothing about it gets thrown in as a full grown adult. Yeah good luck. That's also why the nhl can be toxic. Cause management knows these ppl don't know how to do anything else but hockey. Nhlers who went to college may not be the best but they have the best options for the best life when they retire, get injured, or lose their love.

Not a problem in Marner's case as he doesn't have to worry about finding work ever. But yeah it is what it is, though I have to say that Marner's a pretty extreme case, most hockey players seem like they're a lot better equipped to deal with "normal life" then he is.

I think Marner got one 3rd place vote one year, not sure if it was last season or not.

I didn't mecessarily mean to find a job that will support him. Unless he gets swindled out of his millions and let's be honest he's naive and trusting. I meant life in general. I when he retires he's not just gonna be playing video games for 60 years. A lot of hockey wives say they're men are like children when they leave the game. Their whole day has been planned out for years ans they don't know how to think for themselves.da like the military and how they struggle to transition into a civilian even though it's not too different at its basis.

Yeah I was thinking earlier about what you said and wondering about what Marner might be like as a father, I mean what could he teach his kids other than hockey? But whatever, we've all got problems and I'm not all that worried about Marner's life after hockey. I'm just a selfish Leaf fan who only cares about how Marner's going to play for us in the playoffs, and whether or not he's going to do something to help us come back against Vancouver.

I mean you're a fan and that doesn't require you to care about the athlete. It requires you to care about what they put out. That's very common for all entertainers. It can just get toxic when ppl forget their human and don't do their job 24/7. As a father, I think he would be one of the sweetest fathers. He'd teach his kid to be a good human and everything and work hard and make sure they're having fun, but as far as life lessons they would be lacking which makes sense ofc. Can't teach what you don't experience. Children's lives are 85% dictated/effected by their parents who are dictated by their personalities and own life experiences.

Marner is def a one on one genius when it comes to hockey and that makes sense when your dad puts you in front of the TV every night at 10 months old to "study" games even though at this point babies can't necessarily see I think. The brain doesn't have an unlimited capacity of space for knowledge so it's kind of alarming that all he's been taught is patterns and gaming since he came out the womb. Career wise it's been amazing, but beyond that his parents have set him up for failure.

I'd say "set him up for failure" is too strong. If the bolded in the top post is true then he's teaching his kids the most important things and that's more than a lot of fathers do. Marner seems like a pretty good human himself and if he has kids, I'm sure they'll be fine. Anyhow, while this is an interesting subject for discussion, I feel like we're off on a bit of a tangent since this is a hockey forum so I'll just leave it that.

Marner's wasn't very noticeable last night, that was quite the depressing game and as the playoffs get close, this sort of stinkers get harder to shrug off. Whatever, just shine in the playoffs, that's all I care about. Go Marner. And GLG!!

Rielly had a similar interview, when asked if he was relieved the deadline was over. The eyes said "no, I have job security" but he made a PC remark.

Yes agreed!

Seems like the kid has had a lot of 1st stars of the game this year. His consistency is off the charts. Had lots of setups that didnt convert. Wonder what Berkshire would say now about Meyer being a better player after Marners pk theft and goal. Probably that he is still an over rated playmaker . Can't blame a hab fan for that hot take.
Wondering if some of the leafs fan base still think Toronto would have to retain when they trade Marner.

Marner is absolutely on another level when it comes to hockey vision… must be frustrating as hell to play against him.
He’s so disruptive defensively too, I’m not sure we’re fully appreciating it. I know it’s something I haven’t quite seen, not just takeaways, but deflecting passes, hounding the puck carrier, love it.

Top ten in scoring and this defensive mentality, rare Leaf air we’re witnessing.
