Not his best game but certainly the best Leaf last night.
Keefe called Marners giveaway the turning point in the game. Note that the game card doesn't have Marner listed as having a giveaway though he was stripped of the puck while trying to stick handle into the offensive zone while on the PK. Which is evidence how unreliable the giveaway stat is.

See below for Keefe comments.

The coach pointed to McDavid’s opening 5-on-4 strike at the 3:46 mark as the turning point. It was all uphill from there.

“The way we started the penalty kill against the No. 1 power play in the history of the NHL — we get our first exit, give it right back to ’em. Like, we’re not serious about winning when that’s the case,” Keefe said.

“Those are our regular penalty-killers, our top people. That’s how we started the game, and didn’t get much better from there.”

The team sucked...but I agree with Keefe that that play sets a team tone, especially when done by a player with a letter on his chest.

Mitch was by far and away our best player last night .. not even remotely close .. he tried .. but when Willy and Matty play like that da team is gonna lose .. very very simple .. but agree with your point on stats which is why i find them all pretty useless .. depends on scoresheet guy in rink who decides what is a hit a shot a blocked shot and a takeaway or even winning faceoffs .. a C can win a faceoff and defender f*cks it up positioning and sometimes it goes as a win for wrong guy .. I have seen it over da years myself playing hockey da numbers are way to subjective to go off of any small sample .. it is worse in minors where often times non hockey people get most of stats all screwed up cause they have no basis in playing da game

I don't disagree that Mitch typically is one of the leafs most diligent workers.. But he made two mistakes that resulted in goals against. One was very bad. I think immediately that pushes him to among the most disappointing players. Especially considering it's these types of mistakes that are killing us in the playoffs.

As Trotz said the Leafs biggest problem has been forcing plays

It's listed in the game log as a takeaway by Nugent-Hopkins, which I think is right. Mitch didn't give up the puck as much as it was taken from him. Where do you draw the line?

A poor play by him either way.

Think giveaway is unforced error while takeaway is steal. At least that’s how I look at it

Yes, but it's all the grey area between.

Mitch put himself in a bad position trying to be too fancy with two Oilers on top of him, which is why some people, including Keefe, called it a giveaway. Technically a takeaway, but realistically a giveaway.

I am not defending MM bc it was not a good play. He should have just dump it in the corner and re set. I really think he forgot he was playing against McD and Drai. He will clean that up by tonight.

Do agree with you about being a grey area too

Guys make mistakes it happens .. it is hockey .. to me it is not about points or hits or passes or possession or whatever .. and sometimes you are gonna lose my friend .. but i always showed up even as a 4-6D in minors or a 2-3 guy in O .. what i saw last night was 2 guys Willly and Matty who picked up their ball and went home .. they can't be leaders when you do that .. no wonder Matty was never a captain growing up .. he is a great player no doubt but i don't think he is a eat sleep and sh*t hockey type of guy like most of us

Thanks for this info... I didn't know that if a puck is taken it's a "takeaway" and not a "giveaway"

Traditionally speaking, Mitch has an off night mode where his “force it” and “finesse it” sliders are completely off. Easy plays get finessed to death and high danger low payoff plays are attempted. A dog’s breakfast. But he’s been such an engine for the team the last little while I think if one guy on the team gets a pass for Edmonton, it’s him.

My thoughts as well, don't care about last night's whatever Marner did at all. Thing about Marner is that sometimes he can pull off these magical moves that maybe nobody else can. And when you can pull it off as often as he does, it gets hard to tell where to draw the line and when just making the simple and safe play is best because trying the magic is too risky. In the playoffs it's a bit different as well because those "magic" moves simply won't work as often as they do during the regular season so he needs to be able to adjust where to draw that line, and he's going need "err on the side of safe" more often than during the regular season. For a player who can get away with as much as he does, knowing where to draw that line and knowing how much to adjust that during the playoffs can be difficult, but if he's as smart as everyone says he is, well he's had enough time in the league that he should be able to properly make that adjustment by now. Now no matter how smart a player he is, we can't expect him to be perfect and the occasional ugly giveaway is the price you pay for all the magic that he creates but yeah in the playoffs, we really need him to keep those mistakes to a minimum.

That's the way I see it anyway, I hope that makes sense.

Ya, Mitch should have kept it simple and just dumped it in

I almost never post during games but I gotta say, fantastic goal for Marner! Not just how he scored (which was obviously sweet) but the situation - not the most meaningful game in the standings, but not meaningless either considering we're still in a race with TB but what makes this game the most important in months IMO is all the moves Dubas made recently combined with the way we welcomed our new guys with the stinker we played last night. We really needed a bounce back game after that and down 1-0 at that stage of the game, yeah that was a huge goal! Good thing Kadri's goal was off side, that would have taken a bit of the shine off but luckily it was off side and we're tied. Beauty!

Really need to finish with a good effort in the 3rd. Shut them down on D is all I ask for, play a playoff type 3rd period and I'll be happy. The dream would be Matthews scoring the winner, Schenn would be my second choice but most important obviously is to play well and win no matter who scores.

GLG!!

I said it in the game thread. If it was last year or even earlier in this year, MM would have pass it to AM for a shot. The fact that he didn’t and decided to shoot it himself was amazing. That’s the mentality he needs to have instead of just looking to pass to AM.

Especially when he's elevating and Matthews has been fading. It's good to see him put the team on his back like that.

I think you might have to go back to the Marner, JT, ROR line.
