I can’t believe marners high iq is actually a debate. It’s literally his #1 asset

Compare him to nylander:
Shot is slower and less accurate
Top speed is worse
Puck protection is a tad worse
He’s weaker than nylander
His edgework is probably better
Stick handling slightly better

If the gap between them isn’t much physically, and nylander usually is ahead it’s has to be mentally/iq wise.

It’s taking nylander to have a career year to achieve Marner’s normal numbers. I love nylander, but the facts are Marner is better, and if the things above are true, then marners iq must be off the charts for him to consistently outpace nylander, who has great iq in his own right

The semantics of “top 5” or “top 10” don’t really matter, if categorized, marner is in tier 1

I have told you multiple times before that game winning goal by Tampa in Game 6 wasn't Marner's fault.

Marner got the puck out of the Leafs end like he was supposed to do. It was Matthews who feel down which is why the Lightning got the puck right back and scored seconds later.
I don’t think any one player can take the blame, but in my opinion I’d say everyone played a part in the goal against

Marner - Aerial pass wasn’t a bad option, but in OT you should probably just go for the dump and chase, not the best move to choose
Matthews - He shouldn’t be falling there, he’s the closest guy to the puck, that puck needs to get deep, whether it’s Marner or him
Bunting- He should be playing the Center roll, he does a terrible job leaving the entire Center ice open
Holl - Loses body position, can’t box man out
Campbell - A bit of a weak rebound, probably could’ve redirected it better. Goal squeaked under him

I feel like that goal took many things going wrong to happen. If any of those 5 things don’t happen, who knows what could’ve happened

Watch this video of Marner clearing the puck out of the Leafs end and when the puck gets to Matthews, you will hear Chris Cuthbert saying how he "Lost an edge at centre" right before Brayden Point scores the game winning goal.

If you're still going to say the puck wasn't anywhere near Matthews, I don't know what else to tell you.

. Pause the video at the 1 second mark and you will see my point. Matthews is falling on his back, and the puck is still 2 stick lengths behind him and the Tampa player is already between Matthews and the puck.

When Marner retrieves the puck in his defensive zone, there are three leafs in the defensive zone and two Tampa players. Both the Tampa players are pressuring Marner from the front and side. Marner has two leafs behind him. I'd say the safe play was to reverse rhe puck...but Marner opts to lift the puck over a fore checkers head (who nearly knocks it down) and into the area where three Tampa players are and only two leafs. The puck lands behind Matthews and right near the Tampa bench where a fresh player coming of rhe bench picks it off at full speed.

I'd say the high IQ play is to reverse the puck to his defenders behind him, the safe play was to hammer it down the ice for an icing and the high risk and cocky/selfish play was to try to pitch the puck like a golf ball, over rhe head of a defender right onto Matthews stick in a outnumbered area of the ice, in a game six overtime game.

Even if that were a clearing attempt, it was a dumb one...giving he opted to flip it slowly over the oppositions head towards rhe oppositions bench, instead of hard and out.

Marner has been said to have the highest/best iq and vision in the league by multiple ppl in the league for years and you say he's top 5? Lol

You have Google right there. You have articles from the athletic and the sun and the countless other news. You uave years of testimony literallyon the internet. It's like a broken record. Start typing bc I'm not sending you links when you just Google search 3 words and have thousands of results
Your original quote is above. I think we all agree that he's one of the smartest players in the league, I said earlier today that I'd put him on the very top tier in that regard but he's not alone there, there are others who I'd say have comparable IQ etc.

Here's what Cooper said,

"The one thing about Marner is he is as smart a player as this league has not only seen this year, has ever seen,".

A bit over the top perhaps but even so, you can't measure hockey IQ so I'm fine with saying that it's close enough to the truth that I wouldn't dispute the point. Marner's hockey IQ and vision are fantastic, right up there with anyone I've ever seen. However, what Cooper said doesn't mean that there haven't been others who were on the same level in that regard, that's just basic knowledge of the English language. As smart - not the same as highest/best.

I have googled this, I haven't found anyone say he's the highest/best, not even Cooper said that so to be clear I'll repeat again that saying he's the best would mean nobody is as good as him in this regard, not even Gretzky and once again, that is not what Cooper said.

I follow the team pretty closely, had anyone worth listening to say Marner is "the best", I'm sure I would have heard about it so I say your statement that multiple ppl in the league have said that Marner has the highest/best iq and vision in the league is false, simple as that.

If it's so easy to find proof of your claims, you shouldn't have any trouble posting a few links for us showing who these "multiple ppl in the league" are who say Marner is "the best". If you're honest about it, you will either post some links backing up what you said (do that and I'll happily admit that I am 100% wrong) but when you find out that this never happened, you'll admit that you were mistaken. No biggie, happens to the best of us. Cheers!

Lots of Jesters here yet I don't recall anyone asking to send in the clowns
Considering just today you said that Marner gave the the team a 5 million dollar discount by signing his contract, you're the last person who should be talking about jesters and clowns.

The poster that seems to be triggering you on a daily basis has a good point every now and than but he's trying waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too hard. But so are you, you're just pulling in the opposite direction.

NHL head coaches, some guy with a keyboard.

Tough calls lol. This is the funniest thread ever.
Guess you missed Trotz recent comments about the leaf stars ...? Which doesn't fit your narrative.

I agree funniest thread. Some posters literally say Marner has an IQ as high as Gretzky!

Myself and @Notsince67 already showed you the video and the stats from nhl.com which shows Marner with 0 giveaways in Game 6. So, can you please stop blaming him and admit you were wrong.

I just think that if it’s that close who cares. It has no impact
I agree that if it's an extremely close play at the blue line the offside challenges should stop. Although I will admit if the Leafs allow a goal under those circumstances, and it's disallowed because of a close offside, I won't complain if that happened.

Personally, I think the NHL should go with an idea Ray Ferraro once said about this rule. If a goal is scored on a play that might have been offside and a head coach wants to challenge it, they should also see if any of the players on the team who allowed the goal had the puck on their stick with a chance to clear it. He equated it to when a team touches the puck on a delayed penalty call, because when that happens the whistle is blown and the play is stopped. So, if the puck was on the stick of a player that was their chance to clear it and if they failed, they shouldn't be saved by an offside which might have happened 30 seconds earlier.

I agree. I just don't agree with @Antropovsky only blaming Marner for what happened on that play, because it's a proven fact he didn't turn the puck over, since he wasn't credited with a giveaway in Game 6.

Funny? It's evem more funny that you are completely unaware that giveaways are known to be the most useless stat. This has been we'll known on this board since I've been a member. You have lots to learn. Let's help you though...here is a link to a chat about rhe reliability or better the unreliability of the giveaway stat. Let me know if you need to learn anything else about hockey, I'm glad to help.

Only an idiot would think Marners clearing pass was a bad play. He dominated that game with the highest xgf% on the ice.

FYI, Sam Reinhart has always been known as a player with high hockey IQ.

I really don’t understand why you guys kept going back and forth about whether or not MM has high hockey IQ. For starter, if he doesn’t, he won’t be a top player in the league. I would even go as far as stating top players in any sports all got high IQ of such sports or else they won’t be at the top of their sports. They might be a dumb person in real life but their IQ for their respective sports got to be high or else they won’t have any success.

As Sports IQ is hard to quantify, I think it is quite unjust and arrogant to state this player is the smartest or top 5 in IQ while ignoring the other top players.

Here is part of an article from February 2022 about Marner's Hockey IQ after he had that short handed assist against Seattle.

The play that Marner made in Seattle, when he dropped the puck to David Kampf for a shorthanded goal after drawing a defender on a solo rush, was referenced by John Tavares after the Leafs’ quick workout at the Ford Performance Centre when the captain spoke about Marner’s play without the puck.

“Those same reads and instincts he has defensively, and understanding the game and the opponents and being able to see plays develop and where to go,” Tavares said. “He’s able to anticipate, break up plays, intercept pucks. He knows he’s not going to go into battles with guys that have 30-40 pounds or a couple feet on him and expect to out-muscle them.

“He has really found his hockey sense and his knowledge. He has ability to be deceptive with it, to disguise it, where he’s able to take advantage and read the play and angle guys into no time and space, and being able to see the play two, three steps ahead.”

If they don’t go back and review it no one would even know an off side occurred

Mate I am not disagreeing with you just stating since hockey IQ is hard to quantify.
I am not saying MM is dumb or has low hockey IQ.
I also stated that if the player is a top player in the league, it pretty much means that said player is pretty smart in terms of IQ in that particular sports.

If we’re being honest, he’s right up there with Gretzky and all the other greats who have ever played as far as iq.

That I agree with and by no means am I denying that.
Just hard to rank him in the top 5 all time and top 5 in the current league.
Just like we can name the best player in the league in McD and I don’t think anyone would dispute that but can anyone name the 2nd best player without another player being in the conversation?

man everyone knows i love willy even over mitch - but mitch has been the better player till this season and his IQ is top 5 in the whole league if not higher wtf? That is his callin card

Man who has 296 more goals than you…

“It was fairly early in Mitch Marner’s career with the Maple Leafs that James van Riemsdyk knew he was witnessing a special player.

“You could see it pretty much right away,” van Riemsdyk said. “He had that wow factor with his hockey sense and smarts and his ability to control the game and read the game.

“He was playing chess when everyone else was playing checkers. When the whole rink is backing up on their heels … he’s swinging around to pick up speed and get the puck and do his thing.”

Checkers is right. Rook to B quiet.

Myself and @Notsince67 already showed you the video and the stats from nhl.com which shows Marner with 0 giveaways in Game 6. So, can you please stop blaming him and admit you were wrong.
He turns the puck over and fails to seal off the boards in Game 6 OT winner.

Im not too fussed with how the dump out was scored, but it was a poor play where hes overly soft on the zone entry causing the issues down low. Others could have prevented it, like Holl and Soupy, but its a brutal sequence for Mitch.

Yes and I posted a link to an entire thread dedicated to why the giveaway stay is considered useless...for precisely this reason...@Notsince67 of course chose to ignore where I posted it.

Do you want to touch on that thread I posted and why you think the giveaway stat is accurate? Remember there's an entire thread of posters on this board who would disagree with you that its accurate. Maybe you should post your opinion on there? It would be fad more entertaining for me.
