Tribute Marner Appreciation Thread

Marner is third in the league in takeaways. What I also found fascinating, he’s eleventh in giveaways, something critics will jump on. But wait, who’s ahead of him on that list? McDavid, Draisaitl, Pastranak, Kucherov, Barzal, Karlsson, notably.

Exactly.
If you have the puck more, the more chances you get it taken away. Hope people understand that. I would have someone who has the puck and do something with it than someone who doesn’t even get the puck at all.

Dougies impressed

High praise indeed:

“His name has to be up there for the Selke, and it’s early in the season, I get it, don’t fast-forward it or anything, but that’s how good he is,” Gilmour said. “You put him out there and he is going to find a way to steal a puck, or make a play and that’s his creativity, but also the skill, the way he sees the game.

“Some guys are different, and he is one of those guys. He has proven it over and over again”

Former players love Mitch, I take their informed opinion over some butt hurt fan with an axe to grind. Gilmour was the total package as a player.

Dougie has no problem with coach killers apparently :sarcasm:

They are not coach killers. They are the opposite actually. I mean, sure they killed one coach but now they got this coach and you can't get rid of the guy.

Takeaways & giveaways per 60 are probably a better metric

Generally speaking yes.
But I am more on situation like if the take away or give away lead to a goal right away. To me that’s more important.
Ya that would definitely be a better indication of a higher consequence takeway/giveaway which would show something different than takeway/giveaway per 60 which would tell you if a player is perhaps sloppy with the puck or is a very active backchecker etc.

Regular season Wins are really good metrics
Playoff series wins are even better metrics
Stanley Cups are the greatest of all metrics

Anyway you get there are the best ways to win
Very true, however the way in which you get to that greatest metric of all is what is interesting and thats what all the other metrics are trying to quantify is some way

Love to see Mitch get his streak to #2 behind Gretzky… it’s possible, he’s playing that well right now.

That shift before he scored on the slapper reminded me of1980s 99. Working The Office, fell down, still fed Tavares a pass for a one timer, swings back and just rips it. It's just wild what kind of stuff he can pull off when he has confidence vs when he doesn't.

Nothing surprises me with Marner.

Despite him being a winger, it'd be nice to see some Selke recognition this year for his play away from the puck as well.

I know he wants to be a grown man and all but man he needs to shave bc his mo is not working, lol.

Anyway, I was saying in the game thread, he needs to keep his game simple and that goal is pure class, just shoot instead of thinking about deking, spinning…..and that shot reminds me of Brett Hull.

Thank you Marner for showing up big after all the least likable Leaf stuff. Really appreciate this low noise no nonsense, high compete and exceptional execution thing.

:thumbu:

Its funny to see the Marner fan club gate keepers and how personal they take the criticism Marner has taken at times.

The issues with Marner stem from his cap hit. Had he taken a team friendly deal like Marchand has, like Pasta has, Like Bergeron, like MacKinnon before he cashed in, things would sound a lot different from this fan base.

If a player is asking for 11 million a year I fully expect the fan base to be all over them when they are not playing like 11 million dollar players. He's 100% living up to his contract right now. But he needs to maintain this level to do that. If he disappears come the playoffs we'll all be right back here wondering why the f*** he's paid the way he is.

I don't need Marner to put up points in the playoffs. But I do expect to see this same gritty, going into the corners, defensive style of hockey he's been playing the last 6 weeks. If he can put up points, like he's doing now, thats just gravy.
Thanks for bringing all of this into the light, I really had no idea any of that was the problem. You know as a Leafs fan who's almost "religious" about the team I just couldn't or intellectually able to quite put my finger on why a very vocal part of the fan base was so seemingly irrational about Mitch, even though he could be the greatest Leaf of all time.

I guess it's just too bad he has to do it in an era when the union demands the players take as much as possible, and even though you've led your team in scoring two years in a row and just watched a teammate who you've outscored while helping him put pucks in the net, walk into the GM's office with his Dad demanding 12m and who got practically all of it with nary a peep from the fans, even though his playoff numbers were no better and he played in those same game 7s as Mitch.

Now back to being happy and positive about how good MM really is👍

The top of the giveaway chart almost always reads like an allstar roster

God I can’t stand talking about Salaries and money when it comes to sports
I’m so glad I come from an era when nobody cared and it wasn’t discussed
Just enjoy your team and the crest .
I hear you, the first thing I think of when somebody puts the puck in the net is money. I think it goes back to watching Gretzky play the Jets and thinking the nerve of that guy, he makes 3 times as much as Hawerchuck and only puts up twice the points😂

Fun fact:

View attachment 616045

With Marner's impressive consecutive game points streak he is on pace and projected for 26 goals 69 assists and 95 points in 82 games with a +13 +/-.

Interestingly last year Marner missed 10 games to injury and only played 72 ..

View attachment 616047

He finished with 35 goals 62 assists 97 points & +23 +/- in only 72 games. (in 10 less games).

Marner statistically is actually underperforming last year points pace, despite his consecutive points streak.

Curious to know which season Leaf fans believe is better for Marner his current one or his previous one? More consistent or more productive?
Consecutive game scoring streaks are great for sure, but it's like consecutive game hitting streaks you can go 1 for 4 55 games in a row, but in the end you're still a .250 hitter.😉
