I honestly believe each of these core players can, and likely will go on to succeed.

Ive described Marner's issues as quick sand and i think we saw it last night like we have in other series/games.

Sometimes a change of scenery is best for all involved

Playing in Toronto for almost 50 years without success must be a heavy load.

A different coach maybe?

If Matthews and marner were on different teams Keefe couldn't play them together.

Leafs are entertaining for some, and perhaps that's enough?

How Matthews and marner have so little success in some playoffs is obvious now.

It's like opposing teams realize after 1 playoff game against him how f***ing easy he is to physically impose upon and shut down.

I really thought Marner played so well last season, last playoffs and this season, kept getting better as a player and I really thought there was a good chance that he'd dominate these playoffs. Reminder to myself - don't be fooled again.
Same man. He started with 8 points in 3 games these playoffs and I honest to god thought we finally had playoff Marner unlocked. I even gave him the benefit of the doubt for being quiet-ish the rest of the series. Honestly seen enough of this kid, it annoys me how f***ing terrible he is in the playoffs.

Tampa does not have huge wheels .. Florida does .. 2 different team and styles of game .. he can compete against Tampa/Vegas teams which are a little slower in pace

You have to move marner to a location without this much pressure.
Yeah poor Marner dealing with all this horrible pressure.

He loves Toronto when he's getting overpaid to all hell and getting sponorship deals at the wazoo - but in the playoffs we need to make sure poor Mitch doesn't get hurt and make sure the media isn't mean to him! Maybe Kyle Dubas can come out and call criticism of him "idiotic" again.

It happens every playoff, the first 2-3 games of the playoffs is a regular season game, for the refs, the players, and the coaches.

The refs - first 2 games they impose their will, call everything by the book to keep things in check, after that they let them play, it's playoff hockey (look at the lack of pp in round 2)
The players - after 2 games of being body checked, blocking shots, being trash talked, they have to find another gear, raise their level of awareness and try to impose their will in a game, going to the dirty areas, keeping the game simple, fighting off harder checks and a playing in the corners and in front of the net.
The coaches - after 2 games, coaches need to change their game plans as the other teams adjust and change their set plays, lines, and so on.

Marner is a talented player, he just needs to learn how to make an impact when the game changes, he needs to adapt to the tougher game, tighter checking and not be afraid to get in the scoring areas.... he's not the only one, JT, Willy and AM also need to adapt......watch ROR get to the dirty areas, it's just he isn;t as impactful as he once was.

It's 'idiotic' to only criticize him.

It's just weird how players can succeed everywhere but here.
That's what is so frustrating - you just know that if Matthews is traded or leaves (I think he's more likely to leave than Marner), he's going to absolutely tear it up on his new team. The entirety of HF will suddenly love him after spending 7 years ripping on him relentlessly.
If Matthews leaves and Marner stays, I might even stop watching during the regular season. I never thought I'd be saying that but I can see it happening.

Worth every penny. I've lost count of how many times I've read that here, what a sad joke.

What's idiotic is thinking that that's what people are doing Paul. Plenty of blame to go around but Marner gets such a huge chunk of the salary cap, therefore when he keeps sucking in the most important games the team plays, he deserves a huge chunk of the blame. A HUGE chunk.

Don't worry, only a few short months until next season, then you can go back to making your 3 word "super crazy elite" posts, telling us how he's "worth every penny" and yelling at anyone who dares bring up the playoffs.

The pressure is different here. Not just market-wise, but that '67 cloud is a heavy weight. I dont think its a coincidence most of our (mild) playoff success came as scrappy underdogs.

Thats not an excuse, because it creates an opportunity to be a god here, but it takes a certain mindset to tackle it.

But it's just pressure after all, the kind that comes with being a pro athlete. More pressure in Toronto than anywhere else but still, you'd think more pros should be able to handle that aspect. The Yankees have just as much pressure, they still win titles. Same goes for the Lakers, Celtics and the list goes on.

Marner's getting the most criticism because he was the worst player on the ice across both teams. It's not that complicated.

I dont think they do. The Cubs did, the Sox did, but not the perennial winners.

Some people can thrive under that preasure, but many cant

How much better does Matthews come out under the exact same parameters?

Holy f*** if you want to find out Matthews’s numbers go to the Matthews thread

What is it with Marner fans instantly deflecting to Matthews. Marner being shit doesn’t mean Matthews isn’t shit, they aren’t mutually exclusive.

This is the Marner “appreciation” thread, we talk about Mickey Marner here, they’re a Matthews thread where you’ll be happy to see people shitting on him too. Same with nylander. Tavares is shit all around it’s just generally accepted. Rielly gets a pass, he’s played his heart out

That’s my point exact I’m just saying, nitpicking between the two is just playing favourites. There isn’t much difference between the stink both being. Both can’t play to their potential when games matter. Neither has a spine. Moving one, and believing in the other is not the solution.

It would be, but of the highest paid, only Reilly is getting a pass right now.

When you demand to be one of the top 10 paid players in the game, you better earn it or have earned it.

By the way, Nylander is the 86th. highest paid player.
For me Matthews should get the largest share.

Ahh I see, my bad didn’t mean to come across as an asshole

Just frustrating when fans deflect saying “but what about X” when they have all been terrible

There are no Marner fans, just Leaf fans but we seem to have a contingent of dimwits who pile all the blame on one individual when there are many that are as deserving.
