Not familiar with the KHL and his team's ability (especially now) but if Grebyenkin can play a role in the top 9 all season that's got to be great value (even as an overager) in the 5th round? Seems to have interesting tools and a pro mindset... recall Dubas/Clark describing him as "machine-like".

Is Peksa looking like the better of the two Russian goalies? First season in the VHL coming up.

And what did Marlie watchers think of Ovchinnikov last year?

Only my guess, but I would assume that between Peksa and Akhtyamov, they liked what they saw in Peksa enough while keeping tabs on Akhtyamov that they went ahead and drafted him and prefer him.

Predictions for the Traverse City Roster?

Forwards
LW Brandon Lisowsky - C Mikhail Abramov - RW Pontus Holmberg
LW Pavel Gogolev - C Fraser Minten - RW Max Ellis
LW Beau Jelsma - C Braeden Kressler - RW Ty Voit
LW Ryan Chyzowski - C Graham Slaggert - RW Pano Fimis
LW Orrin Centazzo - C Brett Budgell - RW Avery Hayes

I suspect the Leafs are not going to bring any of the guys who could realistically challenge for an NHL job this year, which eliminates McMann (who is 26 anyways), Abruzzese, Robertson, and Steeves. With a glut of centers, Douglas and SDA are also left off of the list despite being further away from the NHL. Both have been to 3 tournaments each as it is, and I think they will make their pitch in the upcoming training camp and AHL season.

The top 3 lines are, as you can probably figure out, the guys who you want to be showcased, while the other 2 lines are more AHL contract guys and filler. It is small, but not short on work ethic and ability to be tough on pucks.

I am curious to see how Lisowsky and Abramov work together, as both are versatile offensive threats with good work ethic and something to prove to scouts (with Lisowsky going in the 7th round and Abramov being relegated to more of a defensive bottom 6 role on the Marlies and not putting up great production). Holmberg could use a tournament like this to get some more games on NA ice ahead of training camp, and makes the line a nice two-way threat.

Gogolev has a lot to prove as one of the older guys that should be in this tournament, especially after last season, and needs to dominate to prove he can be a legit prospect. Putting him in the Knies role on the Knies-Minten-Ellis standout line from development camp will hopefully set him up to do just that. He could gain a few things by emulating Knies, because while he has the size and shooting ability, he does not have that same work ethic and drive that makes Knies an elite prospect.

Jelsma was by far my best ELC candidate going into development camp, and proved it in camp. He has earned an opportunity to showcase himself with Kressler and Voit. He may just end up with that ELC.

Fimis did not do anything to really stand out and prove he had the tools that were missing throughout his draft year. However, he does have a nice tool box and prestige, and there were not really any better alternatives out of development camp. He did not fare well on the wing in the WJC, but we need guys who can play RW and he is a RH playmaker. We will see if he can get things to work out properly with a pair of older depth AHLers. If the Leafs like someone who was not at their development camp, like Hardie, Fimis may be out of luck.

Last line is mostly one which should resemble the top line for the Growlers this year, except Hayes is there over O'Brien. Hayes did well in development camp, but I am not sure he is really the kind of guy who is worth an ELC. He likely goes back for his OA year in the OHL and then may be someone we bring in for the 2023-2024 Growlers, so this is more of a future AHL contract showcase.

Defenseman
LD Mikko Kokkonen - RD William Villeneuve
LD Marshall Rifai - RD Axel Rindell
LD Noel Hoefenmayer - RD Tommy Miller
LD Kasper Larsen - RD Grayden Siepmann

Mostly just pairing guys who could end up together at some point this year, plus a pair of the more promising development camp invitees. Larsen is fighting for an AHL contract and would be a good fit to round out the Growlers' defense. Siepmann was at least one of the highest rated guys who went undrafted (according to CSS). I would be open to inviting someone who didn't go to development camp instead of Hoefenmayer and Siepmann though.

Goalies
G Keith Petruzzelli
G Luke Cavallin
G Marco Costantini

McKay would have likely been here, but I don't think he can participate with his suspension. Costantini was invited to the development camp so he can be the placeholder. I would personally just give Petruzzelli and Cavallin two games a piece though.

I like that top line with Holmberg feeding Lisowsky. Let's hope Abramov has a big year with the Marlies.

Amazing insights and write up, as usual @SeaOfBlue .

Thanks for taking the time to do these…. :thumbu:

Do we actually know that Jelsma, Firmis, Hayes, Larsen and Siepmann are going to be at the Leafs rookie camp (and Traverse City tournament)? I have been looking everywhere to se whether or not any of the Development Camp guys were being signed to ELC or AHL deals... but I've found nothing.

Aren't these additional USHL seasons more likely to be for academic reasons than hockey development reasons?

He's going to college next season but hasn't announced where yet. Mike Koster spent his D+1 in the USHL too and he's developing well, all though you could argue his best development has come in college.
Just out of curiosity, how does that affect his contract negotiations with the Leafs, is he still an UFA after 4 years of university or does this next season count as one of those years?

A 3rd rd. pick playing his D1 season not in the NCAA can't be that common can it. He can't hack it?
Not common, but not unheard of, not necessarily a death knell. He pretty much needs to be a top of the league level impact player though.

It is not ideal, but sometimes it is as much about playing time than anything. He is not an elite player, and if he is going to a high end program, he is not getting minutes early.

Knies also played as a late birthday, although he has not made the NHL yet.

I think the USHL has become a solid option for guys who need a bit of a gradual adjustment in terms of their development.

Joe Miller for example (a kid who some folks love to crap on around here due to his size) just had a quitely very solid season in the league and is graduating to play for Harvard this year.
