They are not an elite blue line whatsoever. If you watch them play and come away thinking it can be an elite group, don’t know what to say.

You can only put so much blame on the system, which I agree is horrible. They’ve been abysmal for two years now. Hollowell is not progressing, Duszak is still a mess defensively, Rubins can’t anchor a shutdown pair on his own, and Kral is a rookie.

When 3/4 of your blue line are OFDs, you’re going to have problems regardless of the coach. It’s not just about the individual pieces but how they fit.

That is actually not true. His defensive game is much better than it was before. He is not going to anchor a pairing for an offensive defenseman or anything, but you could put him with Kral or Rubins and it is a solid 2nd or 3rd pairing. Same could go for Menell.

I think the problems arise with Kivihalme and Hollowell. Kivihalme, at best, is as good as Duszak but Duszak has shown to have a lot more competency in his own end from what I have seen. Hollowell just brings nothing at either end. The one thing that works in Hollowell's favour at this point is he is a late 98', so it is possible that he may still put something together this year, and the RHD alternatives are both undersized OFD in Kapcheck (who is a late 96') and Finkelstein (who is a late 97'). Both could realistically be better than Hollowell right now though.

If we could add a pair of better defensive players than Kivihalme and Hollowell, then it would probably be elite.

He's right, I wish we could go back to the days of having a real GM when Brad Ross and Christian Hanson were our top prospects.
He is ripping on Dubas yet if we had Lou and Dubas went somewhere else, he would then rip on Lou and say we made a mistake moving on from Dubas.
Plus he's a Habs fan so not surprsing.

If you're a Habs fan and are going to come here and troll about our prospect pool you should probably make sure that you're team has been doing a good job of drafting first. Looking back at the Habs draft results since 2008 isn't pretty.
Well he probably won't be coming tomorrow considering how the Habs game is going right now

Just randomly looked at Hirvonens stats because they never get posted in here, and quite a slow start for him. 3 points in 11 games, - 6. I know +/- sucks, but he's not putting up any offence either.

He plays on a stronger team this year than he was on last year. Less opportunity.

I would bet on him having a massive WJHC this year.

Loppnen scores his 1st career Liga goal. He's barely hanging on to prospect status and has about 2 months to turn it around in my book, but good for him.

Do we know what has become of those 4 who eclipsed 0.6 ppg?

20 year old Sami Vatanen (.857 ppg)
18 year old Miro Heiskanen (.767 ppg)
20 year old Esa Lindel (.614 ppg)

These were the ones I found on 20-Year Old Liiga Defensemen - Regular Season Stats It cuts off at 20 games played for ppg purposes.

I was looking through on eliteprospects, but only looked at 19 or younger
I got:

Ville Heinola - 2020-21 - Age: 19 - 19GP - 14 Pts - 0.737PPG
Miro Heiskanen - 2017-18 - Age: 18 - 30GP - 23Pts - 0.767PPG
Sami Vatanen - 2010-11 - Age: 19 - 52GP - 31Pts - 0.596PPG (which EP rounds to 0.60)
Ville Lajunen - 2007-08 - Age: 19 - 19GP - 12Pts - 0.632PPG

So I guess that stat depends on if you are counting the Age 20 season, and if you are rounding to one/two significant digits or three..! But either way, good company to be in!

If Niemela can give us any sort of Heinola, Heikanen, Vatanen, or Lindell level hype and success, I'd be more than happy. Lajunen, while never playing in the NHL, has had a pretty solid and consistent career in Europe (Liiga, SHL, KHL), and a young Joni Pitkanen came close to 0.6PPG back in the day, so those wouldn't be bad benchmarks for Niemela either

Thanks for the help :) Definitely great company to be in, looking like a very promising pick at this time. Excited to watch Niemela at the WJC!

Pitkanen is a name I haven't read about in a long time.

Dammit no sound. Kressler shoots it, hits the pad then some other flint player gets the rebound and shoots it in. First assist for the kressler.

he’s very good at disrupting the rhythm of the other team and getting into the lanes.

Pronman redrafted the 2020 draft and Niemela, Hirvonen, Artur and Miettinen all rose.
Hirvonen rose about 25 spots. Niemela about 30 spots. Artur about 30 spots. Miettinen about 50 spots.

Not bad for a prospect pool with undersized not talented players apparently
To be fair, Pronman absolutely wet himself at our 2015 draft. Couldn't believe the guys we got. If you're small and skilled in juniors, he's very high on you. Ranked us as having the best draft along with Edmonton.
