Listed below are the 9 forwards drafted out of the Liiga in the first 3 rounds of the draft since 2014 that played their D+1 season in Liiga as well. Here is how they compare to Roni Hirvonen's season (so far):

My Observations:
1) Lundell's season so far is special. Having a season so far that's exceeding Aho's (which was unbelievable in it's own right) and he's doing it with slightly harder zone starts and more ATOI. The low-offense upside remarks I made about 3 months ago (I stopped believing it before the draft) are completely gone in my mind. This guy legit has 1C upside.

2) The only guys with offensive zone starts under 50% are Hintz and Hirvonen. This should directly effect each of their CF% due to the difficultly of starting in their own zone. Hintz was kind of a possession beast and he's a positive possession player at the NHL level.

3) Not only is Hirvonen the only player on this list with a negative drag on possession, he's significantly worse than 2nd worse on this list. This isn't to sound the bells and say "he's a bust", this is something I believe may be concerning that we need to watch going forward. Let's remember Kokkonen went from a similar rel.CF% as Hirvonen in his D+1 to almost +8 in his D+2.

4) Production-wise I don't think there is anything to worry about with Hirvonen. His oiSH% is a touch high for his production, but his production is similar to everyone else (except Lundell & Aho), with Kupari's PPG being backed by an insane oiSH%. If he gets a couple more points the next few games he'd be right there with Saarela & Hintz.

5) of the guys on the list that went through the same path as him, here is what I'd consider them today:
1 star (Aho)
2 good NHL players (Kapanen, Hintz)
1 potential star (Lundell)
1 potentially good NHL player (Kupari)
2 potential NHL players in some capacity (Saarela, Luostarinen)
1 not looking too good (Nordgren)

I'd say Hirvonen's season compares relatively well to Kapanen, Luostarinen, and Nordgren. I'd argue his season is a touch behind Kupari, Saarela, and Hintz. He's well behind Aho & Lundell.

Interesting analysis. If you look at last season, Hirvonen was a much better possession player last season, and Assat was a much worse possession team as well. This year the opposite happened. His zone starts are also similar with a tad tougher usage this season.
Not sure what to make of it yet.
Reports say he is playing well, so maybe it's one of those things that turn around as more games pass, so we'll see I guess.

I was worried about Lundell's offensive upside too but like you, my concerns dimished at the draft. He looks to be a star in the making.

Hirvonen's also a pass-first player whose standout trait is his playmaking. He should probably be compared to Kupari, but he was a top 20 pick and played with Heponiemi who was basically PPG in that league, so no surprise he's lagging behind him. Kupari was 5th among forwards on Karpat in scoring, Hirvonen is 6th on Assat.

Given his usage and limited OZ starts relative to the others on that list, it's hard to expect more from him if his line mates aren't finishing. Karpat's leading goal scorer had .5GPG, meanwhile Hirvonen is 2nd on his team in goals; they're lacking finishers. Assat is a top 5 team in terms of GF (a lot of production coming from the D) but they also boast the most GA in the league, so for him to be getting more DZ starts and still produce without getting shelled is solid.

Where did you get the CF% for QMJHL?

Prospect of the week #6
We have 3 contendors this week. Abramov, Hirvonen and Artur. Abramov and Hirvonen both had 3 points in 3 games, and had 2 ES 1 PP points each. Artur had a less then GAA of 2.50 and .926 SV% in 2 games. The SV% is nice but the GAA is a bit high and it's 2 games, so it won't be Artur. I can't differentiate the forwards but I have to give it to the player with the highlight reel goals, so Hirvonen gets it this week.

Maybe this was posted last week, and I missed it... apologies if that's the case.

ECHL press release

PRINCETON, NJ – In light of COVID-19’s continued impact across the Northeast region, the ECHL announced Wednesday that each of the six teams in the North Division – Adirondack Thunder, Brampton Beast, Maine Mariners, Newfoundland Growlers, Reading Royals and Worcester Railers – will be suspending play for the 2020-21 ECHL season under the League’s policy for COVID-19. All teams are set to return in the 2021-22 ECHL season.

“As we continue to navigate the continually changing regulations across North America, we recognize the difficult nature of this decision,” ECHL Commissioner Ryan Crelin said. “While some of our teams’ host cities have allowed upcoming plans to include fans inside arenas, we unfortunately do not see the same path for these highly-affected areas in the Northeast.”

Under the terms of the ECHL/PHPA Collective Bargaining Agreement, all players from the Adirondack Thunder, Brampton Beast, Maine Mariners, Newfoundland Growlers, Reading Royals and Worcester Railers are free agents for the 2020-21 season immediately.

Looks like Kotkienemi's stint has ended in Liga. Hirvonen might be pushed into an even bigger role now. The fact he was outperforming a former top 3 pick is a good sign. We'll see how he handles extra responsibility

Koster pointless through 3 games so far but could have had a couple apples tonight. Slick shot-pass in the 1st for an open net tip that his teammate fanned on, then sprung a forward for a breakaway in the 2nd but the puck bobbled off of his stick. Back on the top PP with Johnson for the 2nd game and getting more confident.

Commentator’s gushing over Koster "I don’t think i’ve seen him with a bad puck touch in 3 games.” echoes what i’ve been thinking.

Also, O'Connell looks more like 6'2" than 6'1". Better skater than I thought. EDIT: just picked up his first assist in his first game with a solid stick check at the red-line.

My first time watching Abramov this season and man is he clearly the best player on that team. Really grown since last year. He very easily could have had 5+ points today if he had a couple players on his level.

He's gonna look fantastic on the Marlies next season.
