Thats pretty awful. Korshkov and Grundstorm are 3rd liners, while Dermott is only a 3rd pairing d man until he proves otherwise and I'm confident he will, but it still paints a bad picture on Hunter.
.
I think Dermott is better than a 3rd pairing defenseman, but a lot has to go right for Korshkov and Grundstrom to be more than 4th liners

Good analogy. I think the report was if they went D in the 1st round, they would go forward, but thinking about it now, thats a flawed approach. You shouldn't let your previous actions determine the next one.

Call me crazy but I think Aho would return a better defenseman than Dermott in a trade if it came down to it.

It's kind of crazy that Marner + Matthews is an underwhelming haul for what we could have gotten those two drafts. Werenski/Provorov/Rantanen + Konecny + Aho + potentially one of Carlo/Dermott + Matthews + Hart/DeBrincat.. that's not even counting the 2nds wasted on 4th liners and not selling Bozak/JVR and co.

What do I click to block someone?

You would not be able to get both Konecny and Aho.

Depends on which side rejected the 4 for 8 + 34 + 38 trade at the draft. If that had gone through we'd wouldn't have needed to trade 24 down for the Dermott pick.

They didn't seem to like our 1st ask which was 8+34+38+54, which was more of a "feeler" well before we were on the clock. When Marner was on the board we didn't circle back so there wasn't really a chance for them to firmly reject anything. IMO if we did pursue that deal it would have ended up something like 8+34+54. But then the Philly deal for 29+61 would still be possible so Konecny wouldn't be a lock, but both of Aho/Dermott would be quite possible.

I was firmly on team trade down at the time, with Barzal and Provorov right up there with Marner and Hanifin as a target group of 4. Didn't care much for Werenski/Rantanen. As much as it is vindicating seeing them all turn out this well, it's not a likely outcome and it's hard to fault Hunter for being right the Marner was a special player.

Leafs really had no interest in moving the pick once Buffalo and Arizona passed on Marner.

Siegel had an article today on why Sandin and Lilly aren't playing right now.

On Sandin, SHL is a non starter. The SHL has little interest in keeping players on a short term basis until the NHL season starts. Liga could be an option but Sandin has no ties there, and it would be uncomfortable for him. In the end, they decided against it because they want Sandin fully prepared for training camp.

Lilly, the SHL is a non starter for the reasons listed above again. One option apparently discussed is sending him to the second division in Sweden. However they are waiting on any NHL announcement. If the season were to begin in mid to late December, they won't send him.

That's odd. I was told on here that those 2 not playing in Sweden was yet another complete Dubas screw-up, and yet another reason for him to be fired. lol

Seider, Veleno, Bjornfot and Bokk are all on loan in the SHL. It certainly wasn't a non-starter for Djurgardens, Rogle and Malmo.

Most overseas NHL prospects seem to have gone the DEL route though, which has always been an import-heavy league.

You need to be more selective in who you listen to.

Korshkov with 1G + 1A in Lokomotiv's game against Barys with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd.

Also, Korsh almost just fought former Leafs 2nd rounder Jesse Blacker. Fended off two defenders, drove the net wide and took out the Barys goalie after almost scoring again.

Wanted to get another look at Holmberg today, but looks like he’s out of the lineup for Vaxjo.

Checked out Hallander instead. Still a period to go, but not an overly noticeable game. He does a lot of the little things right - very crafty under pressure, rarely makes a glaring mistake, plays deep in the D zone and makes smart short passes breaking the team out almost every time. His first step and agility still need some refining; looks a second behind when the play changes direction, but nothing major. Would like to see him take more authority offensively rather than deferring to teammates and being content as a support player. I think he’ll make a nice impression in camp, but pretty unlikely he gets any games with the big club. Needs another year IMO but he projects well.

There's a reasonable chance those guys play out a full SHL season considering their teams are hot garbage and development is the priority. Not like Detroit is going to suddenly need Seider for a playoff run.

Effectively this. Those teams probably don't care if those guys come back to North America this year. Other than maybe Seider, none of them should be in the NHL or will be important depth for their teams.

Sandin and Liljegren may not be in the NHL, but Dubas will want them back in North America as primary call ups from the AHL. If the NHL is running, then so is the AHL, so they will be playing.

Absolutely, we should know what the player's career will look like before we draft. We should get rid of scouting and "eye test" and analytics in favor of prognosticators and a haruspex.

Those are all players we were rumored to be interested in before the draft, other than Carlo. Reaching for a double overager at #31 is a bad idea whether you're using hindsight or not.

Good to see they are having “discussions”. They are a couple months behind the eight ball, but better late than never. Allsvenskan is not an ideal landing place for either player, but it is still a professional league and certainly beats no hockey at all.
