I don't think that is necessarily the issue or "by design", but rather by necessity... He just won't frame it like that. His partners, usually Jeremie Poirier but occasionally guys like Desroches as well, struggle to defend. So much like Zaitsev when he was with Gardiner, Villeneuve is having to pick up the slack. Can't be doing as much offensively when you can't trust your defenseman to cover you, or you have to constantly cover them.

Also he does not get to touch the puck as much since it is always on Poirier's stick on the back end.
Yeah he obviously won't say I have to cover fot my partner. It's funny the conflicting reports on his defensive game. Wheeler says he is fine in that area, while Sooching says it needs some work.

Some other stuff. Kloke says Leafs were interested in Askarov if he fell to 15.

Leafs tried to trade up with Nashville to get him. NSH took him instead.

It's in one of the draft videos, either ours or theirs.

Seems once they said no and took him, the Leafs then had to quickly turn attention to the us trading the pick scenarios, and we ran out of time (thankfully) and took Amirov.

Thats interesting. Seems like they really liked Askarov.
Leafs did take lots of time to pick Amirov, so noy surprised. Amirov was their pick if they couldn't get the pick.

Not really thankfully that they kept the pick, pretty sure Amirov was the guy, but felt they could get him later than 15th. So it would have been better to move back while still getting their guy.

Amirov went where he was expected to go. There is no guarantee he would still be available, and I doubt he would be.

There’s a solid chance whoever was trading up wanted him. It also wasn’t necessarily a trade down situation. There were reports around the time that we were looking at trading the puck outright as well.

Hard to say what was going for sure. Maybe there was really no discussions and there was just an issue with the pick submission thing, so it appeared like we ran out of time lol

considering where Chinakov and Mukhamadullin went, it's hard to agree with this. Teams were very interested in KHL players who could contribute, and Amirov is clearly ahead of both of those guys as a prospect. It's honestly a surprise he didn't go sooner

I'm happy with Amirov so far. Picking up Askarov would have been amazing though.

I wonder how far they were looking to trade back? One can speculate, and wonder if they were looking at 19/20 and hoping to get one of the D there, but picked the best guy at their spot, when they couldn't facilitate a move.

If we picked up askarov, i don’t think we would have had niemela and hirvonen. We did not have a third until ottawa traded with us, and i don’t think a future 3rd round pick was enough for nashville. Nashville probably wanted an overpayment.

Well that's a no brainer "Leafs interested in Askrov" Who wouldn't be? he is elite and a franchise goalie. I wish we would have been able to nab him. Was my first choice.

he really said that. pretty weird but oh well

The Russian board says it doesn't mean he is scratched.
Wouldn't make sense to not play one of their better forwards.
I just listened to the interview by Lorionov. He did say 5th centre but thats only part of it. He said Abramov is a bit behind in other aspects, but says with the exhibition games coming, that should help him, and he expects him to get a bigger role after like he had in Moscow.

SDA has okay/average skating with an undersized frame. He has good passing skills and makes quick decisions with the puck. His shot is a bit weak and he is a playmaker. He has pretty good vision and seems to perform well with better players. He plays more like an f2/f3 and is not strong at hounding down pucks. In the one game i saw this year, i thought he was lacksadaisical. He is smart and skilled. He is projected to be a middle six center with pp2 time.

I haven’t seen korshkov this year. I saw him play in 2017. He’s an older prospect, physical. I always thought he was more of a playmaker than a goal scorer. He projects to be a bottom six winger in the nhl, but may stay in the khl. He is currently playing in the khl for the year.

Korshkov Is only a year younger than Freddy Gauthier...seems like gauthier has/had been in the org for ever.

UConn men’s hockey to add Ryan Tverberg after holiday break; Firstov, Kuznetsov at Russian World Juniors camp

https://www.journalinquirer.com/spo...cle_242cb134-33c7-11eb-adf6-770a5835bbef.html

Ryan tverberg is apparently joining uconn in january because the bchl is very inconclusive on their start time.

Methinks it’ll be important to look at the rosters sent on twitter before the game to ensure tverberg is actually playing as i think he will be the extra forward and he may not be likely play more than a handful of games.

Good. If he is going to be playing for a weaker team, at least get him there for 4.5 years as a guy who should be one of their top forwards from day 1. Plus he will be going up against some good teams since he is in a tough conference.

There is a lot to like about the kid. He's got hands, he has wheels, and he loves to drive the net. If he has any kind of IQ and bulks up a bit, then he can easily be a bottom 6er in the NHL.

EDIT: It also looks like the Leafs can keep Greenway's rights for an extra year. I think he can choose to opt-out and go pro with any team still, but he may decide to stick it out with Maine, which is probably his best shot at standing out if he does not do so this year.

It might be a weaker team, but he's in a stronger conference than he was with Harvard. That plus being on a "weaker" team will most likely ensure he gets legitimate playing time..... unlike Harvard.

The fact he probably wasn't going to play a real game this year in the BCHL or for Harvard made me really happy about this decision as it was confirmed he'd be playing after the holidays when he switched. I'd rather him do this than waste an entire year of development.

Some news
The plan was for Hallander to come to training camp, but it was decided he will remain in Lulea for the rest of the season.

I would have liked to have watched him in camp but with COVID and international travel the way it is I can understand the team not wanting to screw with his season like that

ECAC is not the best conference in the world, and I probably wouldn't want my prospects to go to any team besides Harvard, but Harvard specifically has a good amount of resources invested in making their hockey program top notch.

UConn plays in the Hockey East, which some say is the toughest conference (personally, I would take the Big 10 and possibly even the NCHC over Hockey East, but they do have good teams), but they don't play them much more often than Harvard, and they don't have a ton of resources or a proven track record of producing NHL talent. Playing in a good conference is one thing, but you also need to play on a good team. I wouldn't want many of my guys to go to the University of Vermont right now despite being in the Hockey East.

The main positive is that I expect him to compete for a top 6 job from the beginning, just like Miettinen in St. Cloud State. Connecticut doesn't have much in terms of top 6 forward talent, and even less when it comes to centers.

I think the main reason (outside of the conference) for me is that he needed to find somewhere to play THIS year. No it's not the best school, but it's better than how Schingoethe or Miller can barely get a game in the USHL right now. It's better than wasting a year at Harvard.

Miller is playing regularly is he not? He's already up to like 10 games this year. Better than most other places.

I am fairly sure the BCHL was going to start up in the new year as well, but if he was going to go to Connecticut regardless, I'd rather he go earlier than later.
