Putting up these numbers in the NCAA is way different than putting them up in Finnish Jr. A.

He'd be a 2nd rounder.
There was no reason for him to go in the 6th round. Still early, but it could be another case of GM's overthinking everything.

Positive: Adding Brodie and Bogosian (so far anyway) was necessary with our young core entering their prime... Negative: We need Sandin and Liljegren and Dermott to develop at the same time... Our defence has been a weakness for most of the last several decades and we badly need a core of young defencemen to solidify the position for years going forward...Obviously the pandemic has hurt every team's development of young prospects and unfortunately it looks like we're going to lose Dermott to expansion. Hopefully the organization can juggle both needs and we can look forward to a decade of a cup challenging team...as always, time will tell.

Artur Akhtyamov had another start in the VHL today, made 23 saves in a 2-1 Shootout loss.
I really like this player. I think he was totally worth the flyer in the 4th round. Hopefully he is the starting tendy next year in the juniors for Russia. But I am starting to wonder how great his numbers actually are. I have no clue how, but it seems like every goalie in the VHL has ridiculous numbers lol.

Artur is ranked 21st in the VHL for S% at .923 lol most of those goalies have a greater than 10GP sample size.

has anyone watched full games of this guy other than the one he got in the WJC? how does he look?

How many of those guys ahead of him, are 19 years old? I see 24, 23, 23, 26, 20, 31, 29... There is one 19 year old ahead of him in SV %.

I agree totally, but "overthinking" implies they actually put significant thought into it (too much thought, to be precise). I think it's the exact opposite, if anything...

ya for sure. I also see the highest GAA in that group is 2.69 which is absurd. I am just wondering is the VHL more of a defensively minded league, or any type of explanation for this... because regardless of age, those numbers are flat out stupid nasty. Like are the time keepers bloating the SOG/ game to make goalie S% look better than they actually are? or are all of these goalies just ridiculous

This is a great question, it does seem like all of the goalies have crazy good stats in the MHL/VHL. Same goes for a lot of the goalies that are coming from the KHL, their numbers are absurd (Sorokin, Shesterkin, Samsonov for example).

Thats a good point haha

If we do Muzzin with Liljegren, I wonder how Dermott would look beside Sandin.

We'd need a really good #7 and #8 as well. #7 could be someone like Bogosian if he wants to come back. #8 should be Kral's RD partner on the top pairing in the AHL and capable first callup to the NHL (I would challenge Kral to be a top pairing guy on day 1 in the AHL). Kral and Hollowell are #9 and #10, with Kivihalme being #11 and Hollowell's partner. Bottom 4 in the AHL can be a mix of Rubins, Duszak, Sapego, McCourt, Hoefenmayer, and any other prospects or vets we decide to add to that mix.

However, we could easily include any of those guys in a trade so that might change by next year.

Marincin, Warsofsky, and Rosen would be let go. They can latch on with other NHL teams I would imagine.
Depends if he chooses to sign back in Finland but Kokkonen is unsigned right now and there probably is a good chance he comes over to play here. He will have a top 4 role when he does come.

I've been thinking about possible scenarios for the young d coming up (dermott, sandin, liljegren). With the emergence of Holl, could we see Muzzin mentoring Liljegren next year, with Holl mentoring Sandin?

I've also been wondering if Rielly is going to be worth keeping around. Could see Dermott play with Holl next year, with Sandin spending next year in the minors, then once Riellys contract is up, Dermott might step into that role with Brodie (more of a "shut down" sort of situation) not offensively. And Sandin would take the offensive role that Rielly leaves.

Akhtyamov is a late 2001 birthday so he won’t be eligible for the WJC next season.

It could work if we move out Dermott (or lose him to expansion). They could also bring in another Bogosian-type to be the 6/7 (or Bogosian himself if he's the best option).

Kloke released another prospect update on the Athletic. Here is some interesting info on the prospects he talked about.

Ovchinnikov
His coach said stick handling, vision, and ability to recognize passing lanes are his strengths. He said Ovi does everything at high speed. Ovi said he liked to model his game after McDavid

His coach said getting stronger and improving defensively is what he needs to do before being a full time KHLer.

SDA
His leg isn't fully healed but hopes to back in 2 weeks. Plans to stay until the KHL year is over on Feb 27th.

Amirov
His assistant coach said Amirov needs to be engaged in puck battles more all though he is going to the net more recently.
It's no guarantee he stays in the KHL despite the rumored extension.

Kokkonen
Kokkonen said Leafs liked his play in the world juniors. They liked his tight gap, breakouts and ability to play physical. He said his goal is to be more agressive offensively. He said he took pointers from Topi Niemela. rest of the season. When asked whether this is his last season in Liga, he said "hopefully".

Koster
Bob Mostko, Koster's coach at Minnesota said he talked to USHL scouts, and they couldn't believe the improvement Koster has made in one year. His skating has now become a strength of his game, and his IQ seperates him from other players.

Fusco
It's been impressive that he has adapted his offensive game this fast. His coach said he has this innate ability to get himself open, and that he has an NHL calibre shot.

Tverberg
With the future murky for him on when and where he will play. As a result of Covid, he wasn't able to complete his SAT. When the BCHL season wasn't going to continue, mutiple schools had interest in him. However the Leafs wanted him to get big minutes so UofC was the best option.

His coach speed is what sticks out for him. He can get by people which makes him a great forecheker. He's only playing 5 on 5 right now but his coach said he will be included in both special teams soon.

Holmberg
The biggest improvement he has made is his confidence. He carries the puck more confidently and making stuff happen himself. He is shooting a lot more this season. He has been moved to centre after playing wing last year. His coach said he should be ready for North American hockey in 2 seasons.

Miettinen
His coach is surprised how good his IQ is. He has adjusted to the new systems pretty quickly. They would like him to attack of the rush more. He likes to slow things down and look for the soft areas, but think he can be more aggressive off the rush.

Something is going to give next year. Sandin and Lilly should be the bottom pairing, or rotating with a 7th D (Bogo) next year. So either Dermott is gone via trade/expansion or he moves into the top 4. If they are moving Dermott into the top 4 then who gets traded? Its a good problem to have.

I'd sell high on Holl If he keeps playing like this and you add an expansion eligible d-man (bottom of the lineup guy). He'll be 30 this year and Dermott is 25 and will be cheaper.

Muzzin makes everyone he plays with better and Dermott has decent numbers with him too in limited action.

You'd sell high on someone we've developed for a decade and has been our all around best defenceman?

I'd sell Rielly far before I move Holl.

So sell our best defenseman this year who's making 2M a year?

Holl may have been a product of Muzzin last season but that isn't the case this season

Holl has been great all on his own

He's only played this well when playing with Muzzin. Muzzin has made all of Holl, Rielly, Dermott, and even Sandin and Liljegren's numbers better in a small sample size. It's the same as the Slavin-Pesce situation in Carolina.

If we didn't have 2 NHL ready d-men who project to be top 4 players in their own right waiting in the wings I wouldn't even consider it. But with that I would sell high on Holl and look for a 1st+ and do what we should have done with Komarov when he had his massive year.

Sandin and Liljegren haven't proven they can play at an NHL level yet, let alone a top 4 level and Dermott has stagnated pretty badly

This team is trying to contend for a title, teams going for a title don't trade top 4 RD on a below market contract so you can replace him with question marks
