Marlies goalie Ian Scott close to game action after recovering from hip injury | The Star

Ian Scott, once the Maple Leafs top goaltending prospect, is close to returning to game action.

The former Team Canada world junior goalie (2019) and former WHL goalie of the year (2018-19) hasn’t played a game since May 21, 2019, when his WHL champion Prince Albert Raiders lost to Guelph to bow out of the Memorial Cup.

A hip injury was revealed on the eve of the 2019-20 season, when he was expected to carry the load with another top prospect, Joseph Woll, on either the AHL Marlies or ECHL Newfoundland Growlers. He underwent surgery, and seemed fully recovered when he had another setback prior to this season.

“There’s been a lot of ups and downs,” Scott said Thursday. “It’s been a while since I played a game. The excitement will be there. The focus is going out to help the team."

“The biggest thing is every day is a new day. Some days will be good, some days will be bad. I just have to come to the rink with a positive attitude, a fresh outlook and take it day by day.”

Scott says he’s been practising again for a few weeks, and even spent time with the Maple Leafs taxi squad, working with Jack Campbell and Michael Hutchinson.

“When I got called up for a bit, Jack introduced himself and he’s a great guy. Glad he got the record (10 consecutive wins). There’s lots to learn from watching him and Hutchinson on the ice and to be around those guys."

Scott could play as early as Friday against Laval, though Marlies coach Greg Moore was noncommittal Thursday.

“He’s really close (to playing). As a staff we have to talk with the sports science team, but he’s looked real good in practice this week,” said Moore. “It’s been a long road for him. It’s exciting to see him this close.”

VV is back on the Taxi Squad after being on the NHL active roster as emergency recall for the last bit. Hutch is off emergency exception as well. This leaves both Fred and Jack as our only goalies on roster, so maybe we'll get a status update on Fred before the next game.

Think VV will get any games with the Marlies to give Woll a breather until Scott is ready to go?

Really excited to get to see St. Cloud and Veeti this weekend. National championship is on TSN this Saturday I believe if anyone else was wondering. I have wanted to watch a full game of his for a while now.

What a great experience for his development. Smart move choosing to play in St. Cloud where he’s had opportunity and team success.

ya I agree. It was a very very abnormal path to being drafted in the NHL. Not often do you see Finn's hold out of the Finnish Pro system. He clearly knew he wanted to go to NCAA. It also shows the depths of our scouting staff. This guy should have never made it to the 6th round. Major value pick in the 6th. He is effectively a 3rd rounder selected in the 6th IMO. So nice to see him progressing so well

It's going to be a lot of fun watching the most prolific star American goal scoring prospect playing against Caufield
lol am interested to see he and Robertson on the same ice considering how Leaf fans have been claiming Robertson was better the last couple of years.

that said, CC hasn’t exactly played a ton in the last month.

Bob McGill had got to be the worst colour guy on the planet. I recognize I would be terrible at it as well, and he likely has taken a few too many blows to the head. But man, him describing the play sounds very similar to a 4 year coming up with a alibi.

Woll is horrible. He cannot handle the puck at all yet chases every dump in.

You can blame coaching for a lot of the team’s issues, but they are absolutely careless with the puck. Terribly timed drop-passes, cute plays in high danger areas, giveaways all over the ice, etc.

Hoefenmayer, Liljegren, and Kral are the only D I’d invest in long-term out of tonight’s group. Do not see what they love about Hollowell or Kivihalme after 2 years here.

Liljegren is the only player from the Hunter era that is tracking well. Marner being a star is saving Hunter from being completely wortless.
