Niemela will he play for the Marlies this year and when do we expect to make the leafs ?

Any other defenceman going to push for a spot in the leaf lineup next year.

He is signed to an ELC so it's possible. I'd give Niemela a 50/50 shot. Holmberg showed that if you play well, you'll stick around.

Keep an eye on Marshall Rifai. Still on an AHL deal but I suspect he'll get an ELC in the next couple months. Not likely to push for a Leafs spot right away though.

Kokkonen could make it in a depth role, more likely a call up. Villeneuve is a dark horse.

I can see us being very active in the NCAA Free Agent market this year to infill lost picks.

Ryan McAllister is a name mentioned as a potential one and done at Western Michigan, Southern Ontario boy that was at our development camp.

Leafs are typically active one way or another here but I would suspect them to be more active than usual as well.

Little tidbit from the draft presser, Grebyonkin listed along with Minten/Knies/Hirvonen/Niemela as key guys that they really like and preferred to keep over picks
Came here to post this. I found that very interesting as well, they must be very pleased with his development.

Yep, I'd expect the Leafs are pretty active on the NCAA, Euro, and CHL FA front to compensate for a lack of picks.

I'm not well-versed in the Euro market this year, but there are certainly a few interesting names in NA. It seems like a lot more players in the NCAA get ELC's than they should, and the CHL ends up with more AHL deals. Wouldn't mind getting Avery Hayes on an AHL deal, and I'd be curious if Logan Morrison could be too just given how overlooked he's been. Ryan McAllister, Jake Livingstone, and Mason Nevers are some good NCAA options.

Leafs only have 30 contracts next year, but also a ton of guys they need to sign.

Under Contract Next Year
Matthews
Marner
Tavares
Nylander
Jarnkrok
Rielly
Brodie
Muzzin
Liljegren
Giordano
Timmins
Sandin
Murray
Robertson
Woll
---
Hirvonen
Ellis
Ovchinnikov
Gogolev
Steeves
Kressler
Voit
McMann
Clifford
Niemela
Villeneuve
Kokkonen
Petruzzelli
Hildeby
Amirov

Pending RFA's
Anderson (needs 8 more NHL games or else he is Group 6 UFA)
Kallgren (pending Group 6 UFA unless he gets another 4+ NHL games with 30 or more minutes)
Abruzzese
SDA
Holmberg (arb. eligible)
Samsonov (arb. eligible)
Mete (arb. eligible)
Kral
Hollowell (arb. eligible)

Pending UFA's
Kerfoot
Engvall
ZAR
ROR
Acciari
Hunt
Simmonds
Kampf
Dahlstrom
Benn
Holl
Bunting

I think it is a good bet to see all of those RFA's back except for Kallgren, who has sucked and is likely heading back to Europe unless some NHL team wants to give him a shot as a depth guy with one more year of waiver exemption, and maybe Anderson, who may be given a chance elsewhere. Who knows what happens with a guy like Gogolev too... Who may decide to just terminate his deal to get a chance in Europe himself (since it is not looking like he will get a chance with the Marlies any time soon).

Really not too many spots available unless the Leafs are prepared to turn to a lot of inexperienced guys in the NHL... Then there are plenty of spots. At the AHL level, however, most of the spots are spoken for (Ovchinnikov is probably the only one who needs to truly compete for his spot in that top 9) and that is before AHL contract signings/re-signings and veteran additions which will undoubtly happen again.

I think the most likely case with Pillar is a 2 year AHL contract with high money. Like other mid-rounders like Douglas, Petruzzelli and Hoefenmayer the Leafs usually give prospects who haven't been good enough to get an NHL contract but are on the bubble a fat 2 year AHL deal and they make them earn an NHL contract. Pillar probably can't do enough between now and the end of the season to earn an ELC, but he does have some appeal. Especially with all the trades and lost picks and prospects. In the year Pillar was drafted the Leafs had 3 picks. I think they try and keep him around.

Filip Kral is in that mix too.
6-8 role.
