I'd have to think as a 3rd line LW, at worst.

Not sure about that. Could be that he finally got his opportunity, which wasn't being offered by Magnitogorsk, and has run with it.

Magnitogorsk still owns him so it will still be their decision. Their best forwards are guys who were fringe NHLers so if we want him to be in the NHL once his contract expires, he should be able to crack any top 6 in the KHL... Not just a team that can't develop talent for themselves and currently have 3/4 of their top scorers on loan to them from deeper teams.

That doesn't take away from a solid year, but he still has a long way to go and a lot more he needs to accomplish in the KHL before he is ready for the NHL.

Kallgren started and only played the first period.

It was a continuation of a postponed game. You probably remember there was a medical emergency in the stands and they called off the game after the first period.

Kallgren started the game back on January 13th with Ferguson I think as the backup. Today, we had Woll and Petruzzelli as our goalies. That is why 4 guys were listed on the sheet for us. Ironically, I think the rest of the lineup remained the same for both teams.

Kallgren was with the Leafs today so he wasn't available. I don't think the Leafs really care about giving him ice time anymore... He has really sucked with the Marlies, has only had brief glimpses of solid play with the Leafs, and almost certainly is leaving as a Group 6 UFA after this year... Most likely to go back to Europe.

--- Start of a side tangent.

No idea what the Leafs end up doing with their goalies next year. Woll is great, but needs waivers. That is more of an NHL problem I would say. Petruzzelli has potential but is still too inconsistent to be a reliable #3. Hildeby is signed and is doing fairly well in Sweden. I don't know if the Leafs really want to loan him to Sweden again so he will probably be on the Marlies depth chart, but much like Petruzzelli, do you want him as the #3? I guess Kallgren came over from Sweden and was a #3 right away. He wasn't the best #3 in the world but was good enough for the most part.

Ferguson and Kallgren are likely not back, and then Cavallin and McKay are likely the depth goalies for the Marlies while taking up the Growlers' spots again. Cavallin had a hot start but really cooled off. He should be fine to spot games for the Marlies. McKay sucked but is now doing better. He is still bad even at the ECHL level and is just an older depth guy without any kind of upside. It is also possible the Leafs add a full time extra goalie for the Marlies, as they've often needed 3 reliable goalies. Maybe it is Cavallin, or they find another NCAA/CHL guy they like to compete with him. Not sure they really go after an older guy unless they sign him to an NHL deal and think he can be our #3.

I've already iterated all of this before, but now it is more clear that Kallgren almost certainly won't be back next year.

I didn't think Moore was the guy for the Marlies but credit where credit is due, he's been able to really coach a team into a contender at the AHL level.

It helps that he finally has some top notch goaltending though, whereas last year he had some wild inconsistently bad goaltending. We'll see how things go when goaltending slows down.

Rifai to me has been great. He'll in the NHL one day if he keeps that trajectory up.
Moore was good everywhere he has been
Obviously every Marlie that comes up is ready for his role
Very impressive

How does his save percentage compare to the rest of the league? Is he number one in the league?

I wouldn't say Moore was very good last year because the team overall looked lost most nights. Maybe that was just a change from the USHL to the AHL and it took him a full year to get adjusted and comfortable in the league.

No report but likely injury related.

Yep. Injured.

Not necessarily. In recent years (off the the top of my head) Chinakhov, Romanov, Marchenko, Kostin, Podkolzin, Trenin were all depth guys on their KHL clubs before stepping into NHL roles the following year.

Trenin went through the QMJHL.

Kostin is a sub-replacement player and decided to go to the AHL almost right away. Not sure why we want to compare him to a bust who cleared waivers this year.

Marchenko also spent time in the AHL plus he was a middle 6 forward for one of the most stacked teams in the KHL.

Podkolzin and Chinakhov were middle-6 forwards on better teams and neither have impressed so far in the NHL. Podkolzin had to go back to the AHL, and Chinakhov realistically should have joined him but I think he needs waivers now.

So far, the only one which somewhat worked out was Romanov, and defensemen are a different beast... Especially on the team he played for. Far fewer opportunities/minutes, and the fact he was a full time guy on CSKA as a teenager was a rare feat.

His most direct comparables would be either Buchnevich or Kulemin. Kulemin was a top 6 forward for two years for, interestingly enough, Magnitogorsk before making the Leafs. And was a bottom 6 guy for 1.5 years before that. Buchnevich too was a top 6 guy on a weaker Western Conference team and a bottom 6 guy for a full year before that... And he was a full time KHLer as a D+1 (Grebyonkin is a D+2).

Has there ever been an explanation for the wild discrepancies in Dennis Hildeby's weight? On draft day I seem to recall something like 240+ lbs, hockeydb currently has him listed at 174 lbs and internet searches have weights like 234, 238, 209, etc. Looks thin if anything based on his hockeydb profile pic.
Elite Prospects and Cap Friendly both have him at 234. He likely looks thin because of his height.
