Not sure if posted but that seems like the SDA era

Won't we still own his rights for a few more years? I hope that's the case because I like his skills and his development seemed to be going good from when we drafted him. Pretty big loss for the Marlies since he was gonna be one of their main guys this upcoming season.

Merkley would be a good add to the Marlies imo. Maybe playing close to home again could be what he needs to figure it out in the AHL and maybe he can end up as a Klingberg type player in the NHL down the road and maybe with us. Didn't Pysyk switch to forward? I remember him coring a hatty against us and he was playing RW or am I wrong? Maybe he made the switch back but he could be a good pickup.

We have Niemela and Villeneuve on the Right side with the Marlies. Both have decent offense and need development time in that regards. Merkeley is more of the same kind of player. If anything, the Marlies could use a larger defensive type RD IMO.

It’s best for us if he does play in the KHL. He would have run out of waiver eligibility and in theory we could lose him. Now we have a permanent option on him, allowing him to develop over there. Chances are his accurately described flaws are never fixed enough for us to bother, but on the chance they are in 3-5 years…

Don't see him as a good enough player to play top 6 for the Leafs, and Treliving probably wants a bigger bottom 6.

Very excited to see how Grebyonkin does this year? How soon could he come over?

He outproduced some excellent prospects last year.

qualifying SDA was the right call. I think letting him develop in Russia is a win win for everyone involved. He'll be able to make so actual money, continue to develop in a very good league, and it opens up a bigger role for younger roster players on the Marlies.

SDA was always a longshot in our system, and he will remain that way in Russia. We have his exclusive rights, and he doesn't hold an SPC slot as far as I am aware.

He is still very young, and he could easily make a return to NA in a couple years if his development warrants it.

I genuinely see nothing but good things about his move to the KHL

Marlies haven't announced it yet, but they've made what is likely most of their AHL signings for this year already.

Nothing super noteworthy. Tychonick and Cavallin probably still have the best shots of turning into something for us. There is one guy who looks clearly earmarked for a depth AHL role from the outset, but the rest look like they are going to be Growlers depth or maybe a 16th forward/9th defenseman. They are bringing back a handful of AHL contract guys from last year. Ideally, none of them should be higher than a 16th forward/9th defenseman.

Some of the guys in development camp have AHL deals already signed, but I would say the highest upside guy out of the unannounced bunch is not there. Not exactly sure why.

There will still be at least one SPC RD signing. Depending on what they do with the Russians, I wouldn't be shocked to see them add a veteran goalie either. To save contract space, they may also be looking at a high salary AHL contract at center and on RD as well (instead of handing out an SPC).

Marlies need their Jamie Benn/Victor Mete signing don't they.
A couple guys that have played a chunk of NHL games.

A veteran guy that can slide in at the NHL level for 8-10 games if need be.

8 points in 28 games with Colorado (AHL)... no thanks.

I don't know if Dallas is ready to loan Jamie to the Marlies.

Kyle Crnkovic 👀

Good article on the top 25 prospects for the Leafs. I don't agree at all with Grebyonkin being 16th and Tverberg 17th though... that seems low to me.

Yea, I'd say Grebyonkin is a good ~5-8 spots too low. What he did in the KHL as a rookie at age 19-20 seems more likely to translate than what most of our prospects have shown.
