I see Nick Robertson has been productive since returning to the AHL. How has he looked besides the goals?
I've been able to watch about half of his games since going back down to the farm and this is easily the best stretch of hockey he's played as a pro.

As people have already mentioned he's flying out there. I don't recall him ever being this fast. He truly looks like a handful for the opposition most nights.

Yeah, the Ho-Sang love after he signed just wasn't warranted, over time most have come to realize he just isn't that good. A lot more posters saying things like, 'looks like a player, doesn't actually accomplish anything' which is pretty much his deal. You can see the raw skillsets with the way he carries the puck but beyond that there isn't a whole lot there.

As a pure offense guy he's never even produced at a level that says 'NHL player' outside his draft year. His AHL stats are just mediocre (especially now that they haven't really improved as a 26 year old), his post draft OHL stats are good but aren't where they should be. Early in the season I compared him statistically to a couple of recent Leafs tweeners, Petan and Amadio, similar ages but both have outproduced him at the AHL and junior (post draft) levels while also bringing other elements Ho-Sang doesn't (Pro centres, Amadio brings some defensive value and grittiness as well).

Watch him a couple time and see him carry the puck thru open ice and you're like, "wow that guys good, he's an NHLer". Watch him play regularly and you're like, "oh, that's it?"
He will do well in Europe I think. AHL is a tougher league than people give it credit for as we have seen numerous KHL players come over to less results than expected.. Future Swiss or Liiga star!

We could argue whether any excitement was warranted or not.. at the end of the day, a player who has the type of skills he has, you hope that can be converted into something useful. You hope that maybe your coaches, your players, your system can find a way to unlock what's there. I was never particularly bullish, but free wallets with potential, you always take that chance.

He's a guy who is an elite skater, and has elite puck handling skills... but as you say, it doesn't translate into anything for him on a regular enough basis. He passes the eye test so often, but then... nothing... and at 26, it's just never going to happen for him.

I suspect he'll be off to Europe, for greater dollars than he should get here, and have an ok career... it's the move he should make.

Do we have a Draft Thread yet?

Lower or higher?
Leafs having 3 in the top 50 is pretty good
I agree, I just think Nick should be higher than that. He is literally knocking on the door of the NHL. More so than a handful of guys on that list.

It's all subjective anyways, and I totally have a bias in all of this. Just seemed low.

I do agree, 3 in the top 50 is good though. Especially when you consider where Knies and Niemela were selected

I also am in the camp that Robertson is getting underrated league wide. In any normal year without COVID this would be his true rookie season in the AHL and he's crushing it. Since the Leafs sent him back down he's started to figure out how to get himself into the soft spot of the defensive coverage. He's been imo the Marlies' best forward for the last month or so and definitely a contender with Seney and Steeves for best overall.

Anything in the top 50 is kind of crazy when you consider that we graduated Sandin and Liljegren, our only relatively high 1st got a rare illness, and we have a deep journeyman NHLer assembly line with guys like Kral, Rubins, Douglas etc. And that doesn't even touch on our Euros doing well at the pro level..

Robertson has been fantastic since getting sent down after his most recent NHL stint. If he could bring this level of play to his net call-up, I don't think he'll be heading back down.

Confidence is everything. Hopefully his leg injury is fully behind him now.

3 points in 19 NHL games (playoffs included) probably knocks him down a peg. As do injuries.

How silly is that. Most 19/20 year olds aren't even getting a cup of coffee in the NHL and the team shot around 2% with him on the ice this season. He easily could have had like 5 or 6 points in the 9 games he played this year. I'd be more concerned about the injuries if he came back and lost a step but he has never looked better against pros.

Little bit of a deeper dive in the pool, forgotten UDFA Kressler got into his first game action since New Years day (coming off of injury). No points on the weekend, but went 17/23 at the dot. One assist tonight against Sarnia.

Flint is primed for a decent run and he should be in a key defensive/pk role.

Knies can come to prospect camp and participate in training camp with a PTO or something no?

Or would that void his ability to go back to the NCAA?

Edit: just read about eligibility.. Apparently Knies can participate for 48 hours and then if there are any expenses associated afterwards Knies cannot recieve any financial compensation for it or it voids his eligibility..

NCAA has ridiculous rules
