How long does it take for Knies to become a UFA? Do we have to worry about him signing somewhere else if he plays next year in college?

I believe we didn't want to sign him either. We didn't have many spots left and while I think the Leafs believed he could have been a decent 4th liner or depth option, they had better prospects to develop.
Yep. I remember being surprised the Leafs didn't seem to put any effort into signing him
Friedman says we're meeting with Knies this week but he may want to go back to Michigan.

I'm concerned. I want him under contract.

I wouldn't be. It's rare for a non top 10 pick who goes the NCAA route to sign after a single college season. Hell be close to ready after one more season to hit UFA he'd have to overstay in college giving up 2 years worth of earning more money than he has in his life.

Leafs will get their man when they want him

Can someone explain how on a 6 on 4 needing a goal, Ho sang is not one of the 6 you put out there. Is Moore that dumb?

Actually, on second thought, I think he did put out the right guys.

Steeves, Robertson, and Seney deserve to be out there more than Ho-Sang. They are significantly better players. McMann is a net-front guy, so Ho-Sang doesn't fit over him. Duszak is the defenseman and is also a better player than Ho-Sang.

It would be Ho-Sang vs. SDA, and I would put SDA out there over Ho-Sang.

Yeah Ho-Sang kind of flopped. Lots of people (me included) were really excited and hoping he could be a legitimate NHL option, but he just isn’t. I’m sure he’ll go to Arizona or San Jose or somewhere like that though next year.

He pretty much met my expectations, which were not that high in the first place. He is a solid pure offense and PP specialist AHLer. Bracco-lite.

Not really sure why anyone expected him to be anything in the NHL when he has shown nothing in his AHL career to suggest that he would be an NHLer.

I think he goes to Europe next year and he can thrive in a league like the DEL similar to Bracco. Maybe he can do well in the Liiga or NLA tier, but I don't think he can handle SHL/KHL unless he is on a middling team that just needs talent in any way they can get it. He will make more money over there than continuing to slum it in the AHL, and I can't see any team (even ARI or SJS) willing to give him a shot in the NHL. There are much better options out there.

I'd be open to bringing back Michaelis, Suomela, or Blandisi to fill depth roles again. Hard to find better vets than them on AHL contracts.

Ho-Sang should've been out there. I mean he was literally the player that drew the penalty for the 6 on 4 like in the 15 seconds he came on the ice. So its like send Ho-Sang out for a few seconds (after those same guys had already been out there for a while right before it), he draws the penalty and then he sits back down while those guys go back out for the pp and give up the empty net goal. Seems like a bad call.

I would say you send out your 5 best guys. Those were the 5 best guys, unless you think Ho-Sang goes over SDA. Both have been about equal this year in terms of performance, and I would rather the tie go to the 21 year old prospect than the almost 25 year old vet.

In my opinion he didn't flop. We expected too much out of him for no reason other than his draft position

Good for Ho-Sang to play for Team Canada but really he hasn't amounted much other than that but he hasn't been bad either
He's good for Marlies, I would give him a 2 way contract next year. I think he can play 4th line on need basis

As for Knies, I still think he signs a deal with the leafs in upcoming days.

Lost in all this are some C grade prospects like SDA who I thought had a decent first AHL season

Michaelis is finally back. Major addition to the rotation and hopefully he gets up to speed quickly. Slaggert and Ellis make their debuts. Slaggert is probably the best AHL contract we signed outside of maybe Joyaux. Hutch gets another chance after getting yanked last game. I still SMH about the lengths that Moore goes to put Kivihalme on that top pairing but what do I know.

I see Nick Robertson has been productive since returning to the AHL. How has he looked besides the goals?
He looks faster for sure. I actually wish Sandin improved his skating post-draft as much as Robertson has.

Robertson has to still get stronger but his speed, especially after breaking his leg early this year and last year hurting his knee, has looked so much better since coming back

I don't see how a kid can say no when Shanahan and Tavares show up at his door.

Another thing is that the leafs really seem to want him. I think we should be higher on him than we are at the moment. Obviously there are weaknesses there but he definitely has all the tools to be an x-factor, even if it's on the 4th line.

Yeah, the Ho-Sang love after he signed just wasn't warranted, over time most have come to realize he just isn't that good. A lot more posters saying things like, 'looks like a player, doesn't actually accomplish anything' which is pretty much his deal. You can see the raw skillsets with the way he carries the puck but beyond that there isn't a whole lot there.

As a pure offense guy he's never even produced at a level that says 'NHL player' outside his draft year. His AHL stats are just mediocre (especially now that they haven't really improved as a 26 year old), his post draft OHL stats are good but aren't where they should be. Early in the season I compared him statistically to a couple of recent Leafs tweeners, Petan and Amadio, similar ages but both have outproduced him at the AHL and junior (post draft) levels while also bringing other elements Ho-Sang doesn't (Pro centres, Amadio brings some defensive value and grittiness as well).

Watch him a couple time and see him carry the puck thru open ice and you're like, "wow that guys good, he's an NHLer". Watch him play regularly and you're like, "oh, that's it?"

Ho-Sang isn't scoring 17 goals in the 8 remaining games, assuming he dresses for all 8. Even if he scores 5, that's still only his first 20-goal season as a pro.
