I'm with you man, I hope they get their eyes pumped shut at this tourny. Makes zero sense how Ovchinikov is not on that roster TBH, let alone not even a f***ing camp invite. Am I missing something there? Not to mention how they handled the Abramov situation last tourney.

It's not like Ovchinnikov wasn't given opportunities. He showed his stuff internationally at the Deutschland Cup, Black Sea Cup, and 4-Nations Tournament this year.

Yeah it wouldve been cool if he was at WJC camp, but we just have better options at offense in Yurov, Chibrikov, Khusnutdinov, Svechkov, Michkov, Pashin, Guslistov, etc. I mean potential top 10 pick Miroshnichenko didn't make the cut either.
The remaining forwards are rugged defensive specialists or energy guys; a role Ovchinnikov has no business playing in.

Zubov appears to be building a very "North American" team with 2 scoring/2 checking lines.

Note the bolded, those types of players also have no business playing in these tournaments.

Tell that to Finland. They've made an art of using those scrappy defensive type players to perfection. Whether Zubov can do that too, we'll see!

I wanted Kale Clague, Sam Girard, or Adam Fox. Had them all as 1st round picks. I didn't want Hart, and I was lukewarm on Debrincat (idiot). I remember fighting people on those guys too. Couldn't believe people wanted a 5'7 goal scorer who played almost 100% of his OHL minutes with McDavid/Strome (idiot).

Whenever I think back to that draft I always think the Leafs could have (and should have) gotten the two best players in the draft (Matthews & Fox) because it was asinine Fox wasn't a 1st round pick, and they easily could have walked away with one of Debrincat/Girard/Hart to go with it. I can only imagine what our org would look like if Dubas had the 2015/2016 draft capital.
I wanted Girard, or DeBrincat badly

The most infuriating Draft in memory for me(Day 2+). I'm no master scout, I've failed several times but I watched the U-18's and was convinced Fox was at the very least worth a high upside pick in the second round.

We passed on him, three times after our first pick.

3 times. 3 f***ing times.

That's fair. I'm just saying there is precedence for something like that to happen.

But I agree with you that it's unlikely he moves over. I would say he's likely to join the Leafs or Marlies if his season with Karpat ends really early.

I think there is no chance, that Kärpät let him come over before seasons end and he might have chance to play in WHC if he continues like this. His probably basically free asset there, since he break trough this season, so his paid peanuts by Kärpät. I'd like to see him there rather than in Marlies, because it would be beneficial to play there under Jalonen, but we'll see.

Next season is another thing and hopefully his playing in NA.

There's a Jack Han piece on the reasons why Fox wasn't picked (post draft), actually a worthwhile read.
Mind Games With Adam Fox (Part 1)

Lack of straightline speed, a shot, skating footwork, playing in a weak division, etc made his excellent production seem untranslatable to the NHL.

I'd prefer to leave Niemela in Finland all season and let him continue in his groove. If he can play for Finland at the World Championships next spring that would be great for his development as well.

Bring him to North America next season.

Nylander's situation was different - his team was a tire fire. Niemela seems to be in a good spot. I wouldn't rush him over.

Thats usually because they had no other option and thats the style they wanted to play. Roughly 10-15 years ago (can't remember exact date anymore), they retooled their program to focus on skill and that's why they've been having all the success in the last 5 years given all their medals they've been winning and the uptick in standout Finnish players in the drafts.

With all due respect, that was the exact same narrative the Russian coaching staff used with respect to Mikhail Abramov last year as well. They flat out refused to insert him into the lineup because of the alleged gaps in his 200 foot game. Only to be one of the more impactful players for Russia when he was eventually given the TOI. He was the only player on Russia that showed any push back when they got absolutely body bagged by Canada in the Semi's.

Canada does stupid shit like that all the time as well. They'll likely not use Bedard well enough or at all, and will put a struggling player in what could be a situation he would be better suited for.

I understand Zubov's logic, but it still isn't the best logic if you ask me. Ovchinikov is a better player than half of that Russian roster

it’s too bad the CBA doesn’t allow that, it gives the player the power. There is literally nothing the leafs can do unless Amirov and Ufa mutually agree to terminate the contract and good luck with that happening. Russian players love being in Russia and they hate the AHL

EDIT: only way I could be wrong is if he’s on loan to Ufa, and is signed to an ELC with Toronto. Then I’m not sure how that shakes out and Toronto could have more say

You are an excellent poster.

His agility and edge work was elite and it was apparent within just moments of watching him that his upside was sky high.

Not many scouts were high on 5'9 defenseman back then, I wasn't surprised he fell to the early third round, just disappointed we didn't take a swing with ANY of our three picks.
