What does he bring besides some scoring?

Where would you put him in the Leafs lineup?

I think the main problem for Steeves is that he is probably competing with Robertson and Grebyonkin next training camp. If they stick Grebyonkin in the the AHL to start, then he has a better chance. He has to show that can play a 2 way game because he will never be an NHL star.

This is why sitting out Robertson forever seems short sighted because they need to figure out what these players are before they move on. They are just accumulating unknowns.

Edit: And the position would be 2nd or 3rd line left winger because I assume Bertuzzi isn't back next year. Depending on whether Holmberg remains a winger or transitions to C, there could be to left wing spots open.

So he isn't ready today?

I think he’s got some experience on both wings, so he can offer some options.

It’s a good practice to give who you develop a chance, and he’s due you’d think.

I'd do it now and demote those without waivers.

Robertson and Knies can be paper only demotions.

Honestly they could both use actual AHL games. Robertson because he isn't playing, and Knies to reset on a few fundamentals.

Though Knies might just need a breather....

We need a coach who will actually play these thriving young guns when they do make it
And teach the how to play the right way
Along the lines of a
Tocchet
Tortorella al component tpo it
Cooper
Our bottom six needs physical component to it no more drive byes

All of those teams take the body and stand up for one another

I'm thinking more and more that we should view this year as a reset - especially since we have Willie and Matthews re-signed so our competitive window is not closing. Move out Bertuzzi, maybe Domi as well, and Brodie if he has a market. Let's restock the prospect larder, and use the off season to sort out our D and depth forwards.
I'm glad people are finally coming around to this idea. I proposed it about a month ago and was attacked. With Matthews and Willy locked up our window is open for another 5 years. This year's team is too flawed to sink more assets into hoping and praying we can win a round. We could waste draft capital and still end up with the same result or we could trade our expiring UFAs for picks and give Robertson a chance in the top 6, Steeves and others a chance in the bottom 6, and experiment a bit. We'll come into next year in a better position to compete than we are now, with a system more stocked with assets.

I think I'd keep Domi, if he wants to extend for a number near where he is today. $3 million for a guy playing C, above .5 PPG is excellent value. He's currently 51st in the league, for C's in scoring. He's a Toronto kid, likes playing here, and seems to have very good chemistry with Robertson. Domi is 63rd in the league in Points/60 Even Strength. Robertson is 77th. They seem to have found some Chemistry, and as long as they keep them with a strong defensive winger, they should continue to have some success, and that secondary scoring is really needed on this team. Once Robertson finds confidence, and a way to get his shot off, he's a keeper, who should be getting more minutes than he is. He's playing more physical, knocking down much bigger guys, really finding a way to steal pucks, and be better defensively.

Bertuzzi, Kampf, Brodie, Reaves I have no issues with moving on from.

With respect to Brodie though, he really has a tough job... playing with, and covering up for Rielly isn't easy... but Brodie's game has always been skating to great positional play, and his skating doesn't seem to allow that effectively anymore... unfortunate.

We've got some Marlies, who deserve some games... Steeves for sure does... Abruzzese maybe...

Tverberg is quietly having a great season. First season in the AHL, and he's PPG... From a PPG perspective, he's fourth in the AHL, in rookie scoring... but he's only played 20 games, so he's flying under the radar. He's also one of the team leaders in +-..... I think we should be keeping our eyes on him a little more.

Bellows - "I feel like my skating has really improved from day one til now, working with Paul (Matheson) and the whole crew here, the whole development staff. They've really helped elevate my game to another level. Same with the coaches, and obviously, my teammates." https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/toron...gning-one-year-deal-with-maple-leafs-ahl-team The key with Bellows is his skating of course.... he has a lot of NHL tools, but his skating hasn't been one of those. He's above PPG, with 16 goals in 28 games. I hope he spends his offseason in Toronto, and continues to work on his skating.

Grebyonkin - 10th all time for 20 year old scoring in the KHL. 6'2" He's a guy who could contribute next year as well....

Then you add Minten, and Cowan, and suddenly we have some ELC contract guys, who could help out in next years cap cash crunch....

The suggestion has been that Leaf fans are not sufficiently patient to accept not pushing our chips (picks) into the middle of the table to try for our annual run at the Cup. We've been waiting, reasonably patiently, for decades, and if we're in a position that suggests one step back will allow us two steps forward, I think we'd all sign up for that.

I'm almost at the point, where I truly wonder if this year, AND next year are retool years, with an eye to really compete in the 2025/26 season.

On forward, it appears as though we have a number of prospects who "should" be contributors on a 25/26 season. Knies and Robertson are really just breaking into the lineup, but it wouldn't be a shock to see Cowen, Minten, Grebyonkin and Tverberg also knocking, or in the lineup.

Tavares contract is up, and he has really fallen off this year. He's getting his shot opportunities still, but I wonder if his lack of foot speed means they aren't in the best place for shooting... He's always been kind of just ok defensively, so if he isn't scoring, and isn't great defensively... we might just have to move on completely from him... I mean, how useful is a really great faceoff guy, who can't skate or score anymore? Then again, we need some time, and have it, to determine if he's just in a slump, as they do happen.

Brodie and Giordano have also completely fallen off, and our goaltending situation is questionable. Woll looks to be fantastic, but he's been injury prone... can he stay in the lineup, and continue to play at a high level. Can Hildeby transition by then?

We also have to find more physicality, more C depth, and obviously rebuild the D somewhat... it's a lot of work for one offseason, and might require two... which honestly, I have the patience for, if it's going to lead to more success.... we can't just keep trying bandaids, and hoping it works.

Grebyonkin has wheels, he didn't sign in the extension window so we could sign him to an AHL deal to close out the year and then get his ELC going for next year. He could be a dark horse for a roster spot or be the guy that comes up maybe after half a season of AHL seasoning.

Tverberg I think is gonna play in the NHL, I don't think he's gonna be a sexy player but seems like the guy that will give you a bit of everything.

There’s our boy leading the OHL. That pick looking less and less “off the board” everyday.
