Here is the problem now... where are these guys going to go? There won't be enough room on most rosters, and they won't be playoff eligible. Most of these guys will just practise with the Marlies, or go home. The reality is, we don't really have any real prospects on the list, so it isn't a big deal at this point in time, as sad as it is for those in the org.

It's Dubas' fault a non-Leaf entity folded cause they couldn't pay their bills.

In fact, it's Dubas' fault the pandemic happened too.

The bridge in Baltimore? Dubas was the captain of the ship too.
Some people are so incredibly obsessed with Dubas. It must be incredible an ex GM living that rent free in people's psyche.

There was only about a good month or so of hockey left for them. It doesn't make any less crappy but they get to practice with the Marlies and their support staff, and probably stay ready in some sort of case where maybe 1 or 2 can play a game if the Marlies want to rotate out players. There's a couple likely going back home if they are EU or RU.

I remember the press conference.

6 year old Kyle Dubas, wearing his fake glasses announced he was moving the Leafs farm team to Newfoundland.

"It should have a good long time there." he said smirking.

"As long as I'm in charge N&L will always have a Leafs affliliate here." he said at the PC before heading off to be.

Liljegren, McMann, Reaves all played in the ECHL. It's a useful development league. Particularly when you have goaltending depth.
Lilly played 1 game, as a rehab assignment in the ECHL. But point stands, you can find and develop guys in the ECHL, even if its pretty rare.

The biggest difficulty with the NHL-ECHL pipeline is the 50 contract limit. The NHL roster takes up 21 to 25 of that between actual players and guys who are injured, add in the AHL roster, guys in Europe under contract, and the fact teams like to keep a couple spots open for signings or waiver claims and that 50 limit fills up quick. Outside goalies who need somewhere to play there just aren't enough contract slots to actually utilize an ECHL team.

The Leafs have been using AHL deals to cheat the system a bit but until that 50 contract expands there won't be any reason for NHL teams to care about the ECHL.

Goaltending will definitely be the biggest issue. How are Peksa or McKay even supposed to get playing time when there's already Hildeby, Cavallin and Petruzelli on the Marlies?

I just realized that former leaf prospect Jesse Blacker is also on Avtomobilist, wasn't expecting that tuning into the game to watch Greb today.
Back in the day when he was a 'top' defense prospect for us because we literally had nobody else lol. What a sad time when we pinned our hopes on guys like him, Brad Ross, Greg McKegg, Jerry D'Amigo etc. Who would've thought Sam Carrick would be the one still kicking around in the NHL, on track to even see NHL playoff action for the first time in his career at age 32.

Kenny Ryan, Brad Ross, Matt Finn, Bracco, Korshkov, Rasanen.... We f***in sucked at second round picks until we have finally started having success recently... hopefully thats real and long lasting lol.

The goalies are certainly an issue, that will need to be addressed for next season.

In the grand scheme of things, they had SIX regular season games left, and playoffs... so it isn't the biggest deal really. Maybe they get 3 games each... meh... not going to kill their development.

Yeah, our drafting in general was a pretty big joke until Wes Clark took over. Even during the Hunter / Dubas years, we pissed away tons of late round picks. Almost all of our homegrown drafted players from the pre-Wes Clark era who are actually making a major difference on this roster are lottery or first rounders (Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Liljegren). Woll, Holmberg and Robertson were later selections and have shown flashes but still haven't quite established themselves, while Knies is a Wes Clark selection who looks on track to be a very solid player.

Problem is Wes actually needs picks to work with, Leafs have only had a total of 11 picks over the last three drafts..

At least we lucked out getting Hyman for McKegg. Then we let Hyman walk for nothing.

Tate Singleton was already making some headway to steal a job with the Marlies. He's been good with the bottom-six. I can see them rotating a few Growlers in the games with 3in3 (not sure how many are left) or maybe farming someone like Peksa out.

Context...

Liljegren must have developed a lot in that one game he played in the ECHL. McMann played twenty two. Minus a handful of games during the lockout year Reaves played nine.

Conclusion: the ECHL is a useful development league.

The number of games is completely irrelevant. It's that there is a place these players can play, and achieve whatever the Leafs want them to during that time. Injury recovery, get an easy game in, or in McMann's case, actual development, and the chance to move up. We were using it to develop goalies quite a bit too... which may or may not work out.

72 players across the NHL, were in the starting day lineups, who had previously played in the ECHL.

55 Coaches in the NHL this year, had ECHL experience.

548 NHL players, played in the ECHL at some point, since 2002-03.

That you are ignorant to development, and the ECHL, does not mean it's not a useful league...

He was just ok .

After years of being talked down to by Kyle and his disciples its warranted.
Honestly, it's kind of funny how obsessed and consumed some people are. Even to be making excuses for that behaviour now... he's gone, we have a different GM now... it might be best to focus on this team, than how a prior GM hurt you.

Another one of Dubas' brilliant ideas down the drain.

Maybe it's best if the whole ECHL folds anyway. Most of those guys would be better off in Europe. If the agreement between the OHL isn't eliminated the ECHL will always remain a league of never-wases and never-will-be's.

You're not developing much in a league full of players twenty and over who aren't even good enough for the AHL.

For what it's worth I think it's a shame ML$E didn't step up and put their money where their mouth is. This is a 320lb Homer Simpson in a mumu crossing a high wire level of embarassing comedy. They just uprooted their own prospects and lost their development team after only four years.

But I'm used to the hypocrisy by now.

This is such an odd take, considering without the ECHL, Bobby McMann, Mason Marchment, Justin Brazeau, and (arguably) James Reimer would not be in the NHL. The ECHL helped find and develop a cost-controlled, decent middle-six scorer for the current Leafs team, which is hugely valuable.

Yea, it’s advantageous to have a development vehicle in the chain at that level, even if it only produces a few prospects, here and there. Great for goalies, who develop slow and late, usually, so you can have a steady stream progression through your system, until they’re ready.

With a lot of signings falling into place, I think the next few weeks will be telling about what the team is planning on doing with Koster, Miettinen and Lisowsky
