I don't think anyone is legitimately suggesting that Toronto is going to play 6-7 ELCs next year on the regular. That isn't necessary for them to fix the d-core and be cap compliant.
Knies is staple in the lineup. One of Robertson / Holmberg is likely to remain a staple in the lineup. The Domi spot will likely be filled by another established player at the same / similar price point. McMann (who will be 28) likely gets extended for family cheap.
What we're really talking about is adding 2 ELCs and / or cheap vets to the every day forward group, to replace Bertuzzi and Kampf's combined $7.9 million, for approximately $1.9, allowing the other $6.0 million to be spent on the defense corps.
All we need is 1 of Cowan, Minten, Grebenkin and Steeves to be ready to play regular minutes. A cheap veteran could take the second spot if there isn't a 2nd prospect that is ready.
Brodie and Klingberg's combined $9.1 million will be added to approximately $6.0 million saved by ditching Bertuzzi and Kampf. That gives you approximately $15.1 million to add 2 D-men and extend Liljegren and Benoit, or add 3 D-men, trade Lijegren and extend Benoit.
Regardles, we should see...
Rielly-Addition
Addition-Lijegren or Addition
Benoit-McCabe
There is more than enough money in the pool to make that happen and there might even be a couple million left to upgrade Domi to a Wennberg type.
ideally, for me it would be something like...
Knies-Matthews-Marner
Robertson / Grebenkin-Tavares-Nylander
FA-Wennberg-Jarnkrok
Holmberg-Minten-McMann
Rielly - FA (6.5)
FA- (5.5) - Liljegren (3.0)
Benoit (1.2) - McCabe (2.0)
