We had a few other prospects in recent years who had amazing camps right after their draft year but then ended up going back to junior or the A for multiple years before cracking roster full time.

I’m optimistic for Minten and Cowan but would pump the brakes a little on expecting them to be locks from next year.

I'm very pleased to read about how well our prospects are developing, but pencilling in so many of them into next year's line-up is, imo, a mistake. It's great that they are proving themselves, and there may be a group of them that deserve the promotion, but to play Knies/Robertson/Minten/Cowan/Holmberg/McMann/Steeves up front + the possibility of Lagesson/Rifai/Niemela ...none of them will have played over 100 games in the show. And with Woll having but 26 games? It would be death for the team by a 1000 cuts. They are young, talented, and may go on to good/great things. But no team is going to compete with the best in the show with that number of players who are so inexperienced in the league.

Knies is showing us that he is only getting better and better
Robertson has shown that he is an NHL player
McMann big strong winger showing that he can score in the NHL
Cowan may be young but he doesn't play that way he had skill tenacity physical edge and already plays a 200' game
Minten skilled big centerman he is already good on the draw plays a 200' game

If Cowen and Minten weren't smart mature and already playing a 200' game I would agree that they aren't ready

We don't have the cap space to get anything better next season

Finally build a strong D
Defenseman
we need a shut down dman for Rielly

Benoit looks great as a bottom pair dman that can also play on your 2nd pair

We need a top 4 dman

Liljegren at 3 mil I think he will be traded

Brodie @3 mil has looked better playing RD

Why is liljegren traded in all your posts? Kind of weird you want to build our defence core but you want to trade our only young right hand defender.

Do grebyonkin and yurov plays on the same line?

I'm very pleased to read about how well our prospects are developing, but pencilling in so many of them into next year's line-up is, imo, a mistake. It's great that they are proving themselves, and there may be a group of them that deserve the promotion, but to play Knies/Robertson/Minten/Cowan/Holmberg/McMann/Steeves up front + the possibility of Lagesson/Rifai/Niemela ...none of them will have played over 100 games in the show. I don't think anyone is legitimately suggesting that Toronto is going to play 6-7 ELCs next year on the regular. That isn't necessary for them to fix the d-core and be cap compliant.

Knies is staple in the lineup. One of Robertson / Holmberg is likely to remain a staple in the lineup. The Domi spot will likely be filled by another established player at the same / similar price point. McMann (who will be 28) likely gets extended for family cheap.

What we're really talking about is adding 2 ELCs and / or cheap vets to the every day forward group, to replace Bertuzzi and Kampf's combined $7.9 million, for approximately $1.9, allowing the other $6.0 million to be spent on the defense corps.

All we need is 1 of Cowan, Minten, Grebenkin and Steeves to be ready to play regular minutes. A cheap veteran could take the second spot if there isn't a 2nd prospect that is ready.

Brodie and Klingberg's combined $9.1 million will be added to approximately $6.0 million saved by ditching Bertuzzi and Kampf. That gives you approximately $15.1 million to add 2 D-men and extend Liljegren and Benoit, or add 3 D-men, trade Lijegren and extend Benoit.

Regardles, we should see...

Rielly-Addition
Addition-Lijegren or Addition
Benoit-McCabe

There is more than enough money in the pool to make that happen and there might even be a couple million left to upgrade Domi to a Wennberg type.

ideally, for me it would be something like...

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Robertson / Grebenkin-Tavares-Nylander
FA-Wennberg-Jarnkrok
Holmberg-Minten-McMann

Rielly - FA (6.5)
FA- (5.5) - Liljegren (3.0)
Benoit (1.2) - McCabe (2.0)

Knies has picked up his game since the Allstar break. I like him. But, he's young and prone to mistakes. I wouldn 't trade him, but his inexperience is and will be a concern for a year or two. IMO.
Robertson, I've been one of his biggest advocates. But, experience.
McMann, I'm sorry, but 70 odd games and the playoffs, risky, because...

Look, I'm happy we have these younger players who are developing. I like what I'm seeing. I just believe the nature of the playoffs is so much different than the regular season and that these 'medium' level players are going to have as much difficulty in the playoffs, if not more, than the more talented players who have left me wanting come playoff time.

Throw together around 20% of your roster to those who haven't played 100 games, I can live with it, but think it's risky. But, to discuss a line-up that offers 33% or more, I can't see it.

@IrishInOntario, "I don't think anyone is legitimately suggesting that Toronto is going to play 6-7 ELCs next year on the regular. That isn't necessary for them to fix the d-core and be cap compliant."

I agree, because I don't believe that is a solid way to build a roster and that it isn't required to improve the D while being cap compliant. Knies, Robertson, Minten, and/or Holmberg/McMann ok, the others I'd be including in a trade to upgrade if that's the way management wishes to go. If the first three are included in a trade, it better be for some solid additions, no rentals. Cowan, only for something special.

Why is liljegren traded in all your posts? Kind of weird you want to build our defence core but you want to trade our only young right hand defender.
He got knocked of the puck alot in the playoff.
We will see how he makes out in the playoffs this yr.

You might have to retain salary to be able to ditch Kampf.

I don't know why people are saying Cowan is small
Go to a game against his peers and he is a good sized boy
He isn't big, however he isn't a Robertson size smurf.

I'd say good size for a swift skating, highly skilled , forward.

And just noticed born in Mt Brydges?

Great Grands (obviously passed on) there ... probably still relatives who I might have met at a family reunion around 1960.

I'm not sure that you do. A lowly team such as San Jose would probably be happy to get an established professional at that price, if the Leafs attached let's say a 3rd round pick (2025) and a 5th round pick (2026) to him as a sweetener.

The Sharks are going to be well under the cap as they rebuild and draft pick accumulation will be priority for them. So if you give them a way to build draft capital, they'd be highly interested, IMO. Especially because Kampf isn't actually a bad player. He's simply too expensive for Toronto's 4th line. He'd probably fit in nicely on the 3rd line with the Sharks and be a good veteran voice in that locker room during the rebuild.

I live in the area.

He's known by his peers, teachers, families in the area to be a really great person, really nice kid which is always really nice to hear.

There's no disposal cost on Kampf, that's crazy.
If people were tuned in to HNIC the game the team sat Kampf you would think he was a second coming of Bob Gainey.

Bieksa specifically talked about him as a defensive specialist...not my opinion at all.
