Nice summary. Thanks.
Those sound like improbable areas. Hoping he can have a big summer- maybe add a few lbs and improve agility and he’d be something nice. Not the easiest task, but doable. Could hit a second pair with those improvements I’d think, in time.

I do wonder what will happen with Bobby Mac given his UFA status, but I kinda like that 4th line.
Free Steeves.
I could see us possibly extending him soon. He's got a pretty good situation here. There will be open forward spots on a contending team, plus familiarity with a top notch organization

I agree
$ for defense

Reeves will be on the 4th line

Holmberg dosnt impress me

trade
Kampf
Jamcrock we are doing great without him
Ljiligren will price himself out

I would sign
Joshua Dakota 2.5 mil
Big skilled C/Winger loves to hit and fight

We will trade for a defensive dman this yr
3rd + Robertson for Tanev

We will sign 2 UFA dman
Skjie
Pesce
Dillon
Demelo
Zadorov
Roy

Pick 2
Lol I forgot about Jarnkrok

Reeves should not have a regular spot. Steeves deserves a chance to be on the team.

Knies Matthews Nylander
Robertson Tavares Marner
Cowan Minten Holmberg
McMann Kampf Steeves

If we go into next year graduating some of our prospects at forward, we could afford to allocate some money on the defense. I see a speedy, tenacious lineup here with a good balance of offense and defense.

Grebyonkin/Jarnkrok too.

Rank the following in order of making next year's team.

Steeves
Grebyonkin
Minten
Cowan

I have them ordered by age.

I am assuming the following are locks barring trades.

Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Tavares, Knies, Jarnkrok, Robertson, Holmberg, Kampf, Reeves.

I like the idea, it sends a good message through the organization and is a great development story. That’s why I want Steeves to get a legit opportunity. He’s paid lotsa dues, progressed. I’d be fine with Bert being moved out to make pt available…despite the potential risks (the majority of the market may disagree).

I can see some of your scenario playing out for sure, including the signing of two D, though it wouldn’t be my preference. There’s D in the org I’d plan around.

I could see NickRob being moved, but I think it’s a choice that would be quickly regrettable. Especially for a rental.

The one part I disagree with is Lili pricing himself out. He’s been a good soldier, never complaining, always improving, quiet negotiations that have been fair. He’s the best bet to sign a long term deal at a modest rate. Hell blosdom and make it great value, I think.

We are not getting rid of bertuzzi
He is here for one reason
To play a tough game in the playoffs and score some greasy goals

1. Minten
2. Steeves - RFA may not even be qualified
3. Cowan
4. Grebyonkin - likely one more year in the K

I don’t think any will make it next year, Barring a major shakeup I see:

Knies - AM - MM
JT - UFA/Trade - Willie
Robs - UFA/Trade - jarnkrok
Holmberg - Kampf - McMann

Ideally Kampf is traded as well and Holmberg can slide over.

Yeah…..I know. That’s the downfall of being a competitive team in a big market, from the developmental side.

Robertson won't be traded for a rental who ever we trade for will be signed.
Tanev 4.5 mil × 3 yrs
I think treliving woll want another big boy that hits and plays d ex Dillon .
We don't have anyone like that on defense in the minors.

Grebyonkin/Jarnkrok too.
Ya I forgot Jarnkrok. Greb I'm not sure on because as far as I know, he's never played on NA ice. He might play a year with the Marlies first.

Ya Bert's production isn't exactly hard to replace at this point. Trade him for the cap space and could possible get a D man with it and Steeves could get a shot.

So you’re thinking Tre extends Tanev and signs two UFA D? I guess it’s possible.

I personally prefer NickRobs trajectory over that trade. Otoh, I see your point that the left side could fill up pretty quick up front.

I am assuming the following are locks barring trades.

Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Tavares, Knies, Jarnkrok, Robertson, Holmberg, Kampf, Reeves.
Minten - Is a lock for the #3 center hole. He should slide in seamlessly like Knies.
Steeves - He needs waivers next season, he could be claimed if they try to send him down.
Cowan - He will be at training camp, Grebenkin likely won't, so his odds are better, I could see him make the team out of camp and then get sent down like Minten if he impresses.
Grebenkin - He will probably be in the KHL or else he may have done better on this ranking.

I think Reaves replaces Clifford with the Marlies next season and is used as a call-up, but he is not someone who needs to be shielded from the waiver wire.

It's a good question. For NEXT year, I would rank them...

Minten
Steeves
Cowan
Grebonkin

I would not include Kampf or Reaves as locks for next year. I think Kampf might moved out so we can replace him with a league minimum player (Minten? Tverberg?). I think with the cap going up next year they can bury all of Reaves contract in the AHL with no cap of carrying in the NHL. He will get the Simmonds role. Waive him, no one claims him, he doesn't play for the Marlies and we dress him 30 games or so on the big club.

I am also curious to see if Tverberg gets a chance next year. Signing Tsyplakov would push some of our rookies down too. I see it like this.

Locks: Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Knies, Robertson, Jarnkrok, Holmberg

Bubble: McMann, Gregor

That's ten guys. If we sign Tsyplakov that's 11. That doesn't leave a lot of spots for Minten, Grebonkin, Cowan, Tverberg, Steeves, or Hirvonen.

If we say our D has Rielly, Liljegren ~$3M), McCabe, Benoit (~$1.2M) and say Lagesson that leaves us two spots to fill. We still have Niemela, Kokkonen and Chadwick developing.

That leaves us about $19M to two D, a backup goalie, another forward if we want a Domi or Bertuzzi back.

...all of these prospects give us depth and options we haven't had in a while...none of them need to be stars immediately either.

The forward group can be worked out heading into next season. I think that at least 2 of the ELCs, Minten, Cowan, Grebyonkin, Steeves and Holmberg will be roster regulars, with McMann getting a cheap 2 year extension.

The focus NEEDS to be on allocating Bertuzzi's cap hit, Domi's cap hit and Kampf's cap hit to defense.

Not sure if I have these cap hits correct, but this seems like a pretty good distribution of funds.

Rielly (7.5) - Pesce (6.0)
Forsling (5.5) - Roy (4.75)
McCabe (2.0) - Liljegren (3.0)
Benoit (1.3)

i agree with this. The other part of the equation is goaltending. If we can have Woll and veteran back up (or Hildeby) be our goalies for under $2M total then we have lots of money to allocate to D.

Also, adding Tsyplakov at league minimum is another option. If we can run inexpensive depth forwards and goalies then we can upgrade our D substantially.

If we can do this next year we can find ourselves with a nice window opening as we keep our top prospects and have cap space as the cap continues to rise, we keep Marner at a small increase and Tavares at a huge discount.

This is why I would trade our first rounder this year and prospects like Abrusezze and Hirvonen (along with Kampf and Timmins) to get a D man with term as I don't see them as big parts of this window. Here is where playing the next 12 months correctly could leave us.

FORWARDS
Matthews
Marner ($12M)
Nylander
Tavares ($3M)
Knies ($1.5M)
Robertson ($1.2M)
Holmberg ($1M)
Jarnkrok
Gregor
Steeves
Tsyplakov (?)
Tverberg
Minten
Cowan
Grebonkin

DEFENCE
Rielly
Hanifin ($7.5M)
Liljegren ($3M)
Hakanpaa ($3M)
McCabe ($3M)
Benoit ($1.2M)
Lagesson ($900K)
Niemela
Chadwick
Kokkonen

GOALIE
Woll ($2M)
Nedjelkovic ($3M)
Hildeby
Akhtiamov

This roster would have $10M in additional cap space to wherever we need to to get over a hump. This is how you build towards a window.

Jamcrock we are playing really well without him
