Marian Gaborik

Despite my previous Gaborik defending, yes he does need to pick his game up. I think he has only scored in 4 different games this year.

Of course. But this is a season in which 90% of the emphasis should be on playoff performance.

Well, with such a shortened season, the stakes are much higher in every single game to even make the playoffs. It wouldn't hurt to have him spread it out a bit more.

Also, I'm not one for making excuses but Gabby is affected by a number of factors, the biggest of which being him playing on his off wing and coming off of major shoulder surgery.

Do you remember how many games he played with Boyle centering him?

I believe only two.

Get off his back already.

2? But of course that probably permanently damaged him.

I must show Gabby my love for him and my criticism. Its like being a parent if your child was 13 years older than you and a super talented hockey player.

Do you realize how ignorant you are? If Gaborik doesn't score he's useless. I'm tired of seeing this guy float and be invisible. He contributes nothing else to this team if he isn't scoring. Some one like a Callahan contributes everywhere when he isn't scoring goals. That's what I want, effort. Show up for crying out loud.

The only ignorance here is you expecting Gaborik to be the kind of player he never has been, nor ever will be.

But my point is that when he's not scoring, he has no positive impact on the game for his team. He hasn't scored enough this year to justify his contract, that's a fact. Don't deny that. That's why we should move him at the end of this year before his contract expires to get some value out of him

The point being made youre ignoring here is that Gaborik is a finisher.

Hes been the best finisher on the team since his first game here 10/2/09 against Pittsburgh.

The difference between Gaborik getting set up and someone else is 40 goals vs. 10-20.

He needs to return to the poaching mentality that got him breakaways by the dozen his first year here. I don't think his speed has suffered, I think he is being tethered a bit by our system.

I agree.

Gaborik his first year here, scored from everywhere. Some of his goals just seemed impossible.

This whole notion of him needing to be set up is largely a recent development, because over the course of his career here, hes changed his scoring style to being more of a dirty area, garbage goal player.

Its not a coincidence we arent seeing him score as much from the outside.

Gaborik's MO up until 2010-11 was largely scoring from the outside and using his speed/shot. We rarely see that anymore. Torts has changed him.

He was always someone who created his own offense. He just needed a center to keep up with him. Scoring 42 goals with Christensen and Prospal? Its not as if theyre Adam Oates here fellas.

Lets not forget his speed and shot was how he scored so many goals. Gaborik DID create his own offense for many many years.

Totally different player then and now. Its amazing. Count the garbage goals on one hand.

Dude has so much swag too.

Aside from the odd breakaway, Gaborik generally scores off a pass or rebound. He doesn't drive the lane like Nash or Callahan. He doesn't possess the puck like Jagr. Maybe his shoulder is still not 100% and that's affecting his shot? I don't have an answer, but I hope he picks it up sooner than later because when he's not scoring he's pretty useless.

This is the only positive from him this year.

Thats 8 points in the standings. Hasnt been totally useless, but he still needs to get going here.

Him playing LW and coming off shoulder surgery has me skeptical though, and I think are certainly factors here not many are considering.

Last year he managed 41 goals in a totally different way than 2009-10. More garbage goals and more clutch.

Jeeeez shoulder injuries suck. He tries his best not to get touched or touch anyone.

Its not blatant but I think the way hes been shying from contact thus far its semi-obvious the shoulder isnt there. Who knows though?

He could be taking injections like the playoffs last year for all we know, coupled with Torts' little injury/media brigade. Couldve re-aggravated it. I refuse to believe he just got "lazy" this year.

The honeymoon was over for Gaborik after last year's playoffs (in my eyes). The player we are seeing in this regular season is the same player that I saw in the '11-'12 playoffs. I think we were all quick to cut him some slack during last year's run because he had just potted 41 goals and was working through the shoulder injury, but that slack is running out very quickly.

What I'm seeing this season is either a player that is still injured, or one that just doesn't bring it when the compete level ramps up. The shortened season has rendered almost every game playoff-like, and Gaborik has simply not performed near the level he needs to to both justify his contract and help the team. This is a disturbing trend for a key player on a supposed Cup contender.

I really want this guy to succeed and it would be great to see him regain his form and continue it through the post-season. But, I would also not be upset to see him traded, depending on the return obviously. It doesn't make sense to trade him for a package of pluggers, but if I had the choice between Gaborik and his 40 goals and a more physical 30+ goal guy I would pull the trigger without hesitation. The problem is, there aren't many players like that in the league, and a few of them are on our division/conference rivals - Neal, Hartnell, Voracek, Pacioretty, etc.

There aren't a lot of physical 30 goal guys. One of the reasons I am such a Dustin Brown fan.

Incidentally, without Gaborik in the playoffs last year we very likely don't make it to the ECF. Same without Richards. I'll give em both another go.

Richards was God Tier vs. the Caps. The entire series too, not just Game 5.

Shoulder injuries/fatigue might make him useless along the boards but shouldn't have an effect on his speed. And for a guy who was once the fastest player in the league (and should at the very least be an above average skater) Gaborik hasn't backed up a defenseman using his speed in a long while.

Which is why I dont get the short leash and give both players the benefit of the doubt.

And also a big laugh at the Richards overrated article. He took awhile to get going last year but from March-May, Richards earned every bit of the pay.

Im going to sum up the 2012-13 Ranger offense in one sentence thus far:

Slow starts for Gaborik and Richards coupled with a new shiny toy in Nash to distract all the kids, and suddenly we dont need Gaborik or Richards, cause we have the new toy.

In my opinion, Richards still deserves some slack because of his playoff record. I have a hard time making that same argument for Gaborik though.

I do think you have a point about Nash and his impact on how our other stars are perceived, but to completely write off that mindset is incorrect in my opinion. I do believe that Nash' presence makes Gaborik expendable if the right deal came along.

Let's use Neal as an example, pretending for a second that he was still on the Stars. Swapping Gaborik for him in a situation where Neal becomes your top winger is probably not a great idea. But with Nash here, and Gaborik already in a "secondary" role, that same move makes a lot more sense.

That's nonsense.

We are twenty four games into the season and Nash is our leading goal/point scorer and has been an offensive catalyst pretty much every game he has played. By 24 games last season people were ready to murder Richards.

It has nothing to do with Nash being new. It has to do with him producing.

Nash is not a shiny new toy. He's the best skater on the ice. He's the catalyst. He is essentially the ****ing man.

Hank's MVP streak may actually be in jeopardy this year.
