this has been gaborik's thing for a couple of seasons now. if hes not scoring, hes pretty much invisible, you can't deny that. however i remember his first year here that wasn't really the case. the dude was way more explosive than he was this year, and even last season when he returned to form. he carried the team his first year here and was all over the place on most nights. much different than how he plays now.

im happy that he puts points on the board but his play style definitely changed after his below-average second year here.

Exactly...he is just biding his time and collecting a check and the fans sitting in the seats let him away with it every night . Lay the boos on him...let him have it...and Richards too and anybody else who goes through the motions . These guys get complacent mainly because we allow it to happen .

Does anybody think that guys like Girardi , Staal and McDonagh like dropping down to block shots when they see these 7 -8 Million dollar prima donnas backing away from a play because they might get checked like Gabby did the other day . That kind of stuff is noticed by your fellow teammates and it does not help a team bond in any way whatsoever ! Plus it certainly is not what you want guys like Kreider/Miller/Hags to see...is it ???

LOL...but like me...you would love him all day long on our team ??? I wish we could find somebody that could clone two of them for our team . :D

His diving is unbearable. I would be embarrassed if I was a Bruins fan. Every player will take the occasional dive onto the ice, but Rat-Face takes it to a whole new level.

He might play in 90 % of the games...but he only adds value in about 9% of them . Just too many nights skating and gliding and pushing off like a figure skater on the back check far too often for my liking .

If he is a 7.5 man...Crosby is underpaid by 75 % and Corey Perry is a 15 Million dollar player . On a lot of NHL teams he would be blackballed by the other players because of his lack of effort...but for far too long guys have come to NY for the dough and were allowed to float .

I sure as heck don't understand why the fans in the seats let them away with it . He should be booed when he performs like he does...he makes 7.5 Million to PERFORM...not reach half halfheartedly and float every second game . You guys pay big money for performance...give them the grief they deserve when they play like bums .

We will NEVER win anything with Gabby on our team...NEVER !!!

solid, objective analysis.

Give it up guys. Unless Gaborik turns into Lucic and still scores 40 goals he will always be underappreciated on these boards.

I'll be appreciative when he starts putting together consistent efforts and starts playing with passion and like he's hungry to score goals & contribute. Thus far his consistency and effort level has been quite underwhelming.

aaaaaaaaaaaaand /thread.

Dude was doomed from the start. I really think the majority appreciates him and what hes done, though.

We're a blue collar fanbase and we want a roster full of Ryan Callahan's. IMO, that would be deplorable to watch. Sorry. I love and appreciate talent on this team in any facet. Talent on this team is hard to come by and hes provided us with some amazing Ranger moments so far. He was a one man show in 09-10. Bure lite in 99.

They let him get away with it because he has scored 113 goals in 244 games as a NYR. He's earned a little bit of freedom.

Gaborik was "the guy" and everyone was high on him... just last season. It wasn't until his labrum injury that people noticed a significant dip in his play, and people labeled him as a drifter who doesn't show up for the playoffs.

Even this season, as much as he has floated, the guy has 4 GWG's for us, two of them in OT. Thus, his goals have contributed 8 points on the standings. He's scored big goals this year. And without those 8 points, we aren't in a playoff spot.

And let's settle down on Nash everyone. He has played 20 games here. When he can score 113 goals in 244 games as a NYR, I'll give him the same leeway that I give Gaborik.

And honestly, I don't care about the lack of his "physical play." He get's paid to score goals, and in his significant 244 game sample, he has scored at a 38 goal / 82 game pace over the last four seasons (0.463G/GP), including this one. He has scored over 40 goals twice, and has finished 5th in goals in the NHL in his 1st season with us and 3rd in goals in the NHL in his last season with us.

Now he is a whipping boy because he had a slow start and Nash is the new flavor of the month. Guess what, he isn't Nash. He never was. He was never the dangler that could plow through players. He's a completely different player. And that type of player is an elite sniper who is struggling this season because he is on his off wing and is losing confidence. Every player has off years, even the best ones.

The way Nash and Callahan are playing there is no way that you can shift either of them (are you guys even seeing the way Callahan is creating offense out there?). Gaborik is becoming a problem on the left side, and not so much in that the team is lacking success as a whole, but there is so much more potential there. The entire post-lockout mindset has geared up to these next two years. The Rangers have an amazing chance to grab the Cup in 2013 and 2014. Therefore, I don't care what Gaborik is being paid. He's the 3rd best RW on the team right now, and you need to play him as the 3rd RW. This year is all about WINNING, not formulating like in 2010-11 and, to an extent, 2011-12.

Hagelin - Richards - Nash
Pyatt - Stepan - Callahan
Powe - Miller - Gaborik
Boyle - Halpern - Haley

That RW depth is not a bad problem to have.

I can go with that.

Gaborik needs to be on the RW. Use the RW depth as a strength.

Dont **** with a 3x 40 goal scorers game because youre a stubborn dick (guess who?) who thinks he can put players where ever he wants and make it work.

Gaborik isnt complaining. He never has his entire time here. Hes done everything asked of him even if its not his style. Thats why I dont get the hate. The dude knows hes probably a better fit in a more open system, but he has worked here regardless.

This fanbase pisses me off sometimes with the way they appreciate players.

I expect Nash to play hard here. 9 years is a long time to wait to showcase talent on a good team. Dude is hungry and im not surprised one bit by his stellar play here thus far.

I don't have a problem pushing Callahan down to the third line. First of all, it would make the third line relevant. We have one of the least productive third lines in the NHL. It also wouldn't impact Callahan's game to a large degree. He will still get his ice time, even strength, power play, and short handed.

It will push Gaborik to his natural position. And in his natural position, he is vastly superior to Callahan in terms of production. You cannot compare a 40 goal / 75-80 point right winger to a 25 goal / 45-50 point right winger. Even with all of Callahan's intangibles. The top-6 is relied upon mostly for scoring. The defense becomes secondary for those lines.

Pushing Gaborik to RW on the 2nd line will give him an opportunity to return to 40 goal form. It will create a better shut down line on the 3rd line with Callahan on it. And it will create secondary scoring. Right now, if the top-6 doesn't score, the team doesn't score. Boyle scoring yesterday was a fluke. But how many goals have we gotten from Boyle, Powe, Halpern, Miller, etc.? That's exactly my point, putting Callahan there will only improve the situation.

And Gaborik won't produce playing with 3rd line talent. He's an elite sniper. For him to be effective he's got to be the one who gets fed the puck. Boyle or Miller won't do that.

Gaborik has looked great recently on the PP at the point dishing the puck and is a big reason why the PP has improved. His goals will come, just put him in his natural position.

Honestly, I think this team benefits all around if you move Callahan to the 3rd line. And that's no slight to Callahan. But if you could get Gaborik going at a 40 goal / 80 point clip, that will help the team more so than Callahan's intangibles on the 2nd line that he would still be able to bring to the table on the 3rd line and he'd still get his 20 goals / 40 points there.

As Michael Scott from The Office would say... "It's a win-win-win."

This makes more sense to me actually.

You can talk as much as you want about the intangibles Callahan provides, theres no ****ing way hes in the 2nd line RW spot over Gaborik.

even though

he is a proven goal scorer, his cap hit and his style of play do not help this team. they would be better off with an andrew ladd nathan horton james neal type player. although all those players may not score hattricks and inflate their stats the would add that sand paper blue collar type element that better suits this team and thier work ethic and identity. take nash for example, i would say that gabs has been a more consistent scorer throughout the last 5-7 years and believe he could continue to be, however, look at the types of goals they score and the effort they put out on the ice. Gabs biggest moment as a ranger was the tripple ot goal. beyond that has the guy really scored important goals???come on. be honest with yourselves.

Everyone is only on about him because he hasn't been scoring.

as soon as he puts up 5 in 3 games or something like that, he'll be everyone's favorite sniper again.

Yeah its been a struggle for him the season for sure.

To me it has to do with preparation. A guy like Cally who came into this league with a limited skill set has gotten better each and every year. Its not something that just pops up out of mid-air. You have to work at your craft. I'm not saying Gaborik is lazy, but his commitment to staying hungry isnt as strong as it once was or should be. Its obvious this lockout has helped some and hurt others (see Richards). Gabby could have gotten sidetracked with the time off - BUT - I dont want to make excuses though, because hes getting paid tons of money. Quite frankly, you can't use that excuse. Not in this town - its just a fact.

Listen, its not like we hate the guy. Its just frustrating when he flashes supreme talent for a couple games and then just disappears. There were games last season when he was playing like a man possessed. Where did that go? Its just a matter of effort level. If you are in shape, all it is a mindset that you have to force each night you hit the ice. Some nights it wont be there for you, it happens. But these long apathetic stretches from him make fans question his desire and rightly so - especially when we've seen what he's capable of and how wonderful he is to watch when he's moving out there.

We all want him to succeed. Need him to succeed. I have faith in every Ranger to come through, that belief is always there (no matter how desperate it may be at times). Same goes for Gaborik. But he seriously has to pick it up. I dont care how many goals or points hes had in the last dozen or so games. I'd rather see him playing the way he should getting tons of chances he can't bury then what im seeing from him now. Its not good. He just needs to simplify his game and break it down into a shift by shift effort. The end result (points) shouldnt matter right now. He needs to break out of this malaise hes in and just concentrate on playing hard every shift.

Look I get wanting to defend the impact Gabby has had on the team, but to belittle what Nash has done and the impact he as had thus far as "shiny new toy syndrome" is flat out hilarious.

Well said.

For me, it's all about effort level. As long as someone is working hard out there and creating chances, I'm happy. Gaborik needs to have a consisent effort level.

No the second he starts putting in an effort I will appreciate him. When he stops playing like the stereotypical European player I will give him the credit he deserves. Until then, I will get on him for floating and playing disinteresting hockey. But omgzzzzzz he's like scored 40 goals.

Exactly, the teenie boppers on here get their panties in a bunch when you criticize a player. Look at the Boyle thread to further prove my point. We aren't being "haters", we aren't saying that said player sucks, all we are doing is criticizing the guy, God forbid you have a differing opinion on here.

Do you get how ignorant what you're saying really is? In essence, we - as fans - should forego production in place of effort.

Lets just buy-out Gaborik and see what Jed Ortmeyer is up to.
