We are also 4th in the NHL in +/- and 6th in Fenwick Close. A regression in our Sh% has sent our G/G from cellar-dwelling to average in an very short timespan.

I've been maintaining since ~game 20 that this is a fundamentally good team that has been struggling with poor shooting luck, something that always regresses to the mean in the long run. Bringing in Zuccarello and shoring up our center depth with Brassard has only improved us further. Let's just hope that the bad shooting stays away in the small sample of games that is the playoffs, it has still reared its ugly head from time to time down the stretch.

I agree. If there are hockey gods, then we should win a few rounds. Boston is only team with higher fenclose than us in the East.

But it's the playoffs and a game of bounces and I don't think we have the natural goal scorers on the roster.
 
With Columbus fighting for their playoff lives, Gaborik sure did pick a good time for his last 5 games to comprise of 0 goals and 2 assists.

I honestly can't tell if those are real stats or you just poking fun at the absurdness of them.

I will say that we are definitely in the honeymoon phase with these players judging by some of the comments.

Lack of possession players? Nash and Brass have produced well here, but neither player is actually that good at creating offensive pressure. They both often go for the low-% play, which either ends up a great chance or a turnover. These type of players are important, but should be paired with a player that is good at driving the play into the O-zone. Zuccarello is fantastic at it, so is Hagelin and Stepan.

I think it's a fallacy that it's the most skilled passing players that elevate the game of their teamates the most. IMO it's the possession players that may or may not be good passers, but always tilts the ice in their favour that elevate their linemates the most. If you're always one-and-done in the O-zone you're going to spend most of the game in your own end.

We have a few good ones here, and they are IMO more important than most think.

Well Nash was a 1st liner on a perennial doormat of the NHL. This is why you don't evaluate guys based on the quality of their teammates.

Exactly! I watched Columbus play their ***** off last nite and the players who were very noticeable were Dubi, Ani, Letestu, Tyutin, Johnson, and Bob. Gaborik while playing hard hasn't really produced much the past 2 weeks.

and we only lost 2 games (1 in a 'shootout gimmick') to playoff teams post trade deadline...so not sure what the point is other than we played a bunch of non-playoff teams down the stretch...3-1-1 against playoff teams after the deadline isn't really a big enough sample size to tell us much of anything
 
Was the trade the sole reason for the turnaround? I don't know how anybody could objectively answer the question one way or the other.
Did it help? sure, but there was also the addition of Zuke and Clowe. As well as Richards waking up from his comma.
Those were all contributing factors.
 
The advanced stats are not even that advanced. If CORSI or Fenwick were just called something like "Total shot differential" would it really seem like an advanced stat? It's just the name...They are very simple stats and concepts and they have been shown to have a better correlation with winning than other stats like SOG/Goal differential etc..

Most advanced stats in baseball aren't that insane, too. But, again, they have much more bearing on an individual (pitcher v. batter; batter v. fielder) game than similar stats do on a team game.

Baseball advanced stats are significantly better and more useful than hockey ones. They also get much more complicated. Even the simpler ones like FIP and wOBA are much more complex formulas taking into account more things. CORSI if you watch the game you can basically calculate. wOBA takes into account all sorts of different offensive stats combined with a bunch of linear weights for each. It's not something you can just follow along the game and be like "Well his wOBA today is .400"

But research on baseball stats has been around much longer than Hockey and just the nature of the game (being individualistic and sort of turn based) allow it to fit better to stats.
 
So Gaborik has a groin issue again and may need surgery?
This makes the trade a hell of move by Sather.
 
Columbus did win 8 of their last 10, including the final, must win game.

It's just that the other 2 teams competing for that slot also won their final games and columbus DNCD.
