The problem with this is that Staal probably doesn't think he sucks.
His eye keeps looking at the stats of guys above or below his name.

Theres a difference between talking a little shit on a forum and being serious about how a guy should forfeit millions. Good thing im not serious about it and even said I understand his decision

This is NYR and some things never change. We always play the big contract guy no matter how much he sucks* or is injured.
* and I don't even think Staal was that bad last season ...

Analyzing Staal's horrendous play isn't shitting on him. It's just calling a spade a spade.
These things are not mutually exclusive:
1) Liking Staal the person and having respect for his effort/time with NYR
2) Thinking he is a shell of his former self. A detriment to the team. And an absolutely horrendous hockey player at this point in time.
I will always have a soft spot for Staal. But he is awful and I want him as far away from this team as soon as humanly possible.
I am in shock that there are actually some people in here who think Staal is a useful player.

People are shitting on him, you may not, but there is a difference between analyzing horrendous play and shitting on someone.
Ultimately nobody has emerged to take over the LD-side. It's Skjei, Staal, (Smith maybe, who is worse than Staal) and a whole lotta rooks.
There is definitely one full time spot available on LD for Rykov, Hajek and Lindgren to battle out. Staal stays until his contract is up and unless any rookie really forces the hand in the next two season, that won't change, deal with it.
Next offseason will really be interesting. Staal's contract is immovable imo.

People in business make decisions that they feel are best for them. Management does the same. So do you.
You want to criticize Staal for no longer being an asset and somehow feel he is ripping off the team.
I'm sure you would tell your boss that you are being paid too much and quit rather than accepting millions of dollars.

You said Staal is ripping off the Rangers. That he is asking for way too much. That he won't retire to help the team.
You spew this crap and then try to reframe your comments into that you're just criticizing him because he isn't a good player, anymore.
Even you know that you are saying two different things. Yeah, we all know his game has fallen apart. That's not the same as saying he is stealing by not retiring. No matter how much you spin it all.

This contract is Staal's last big payday--fact is he might not get another contract at all. That could be happening to Dan Girardi right now. They have young families--so expecting them to walk away from their contracts is kind of ridiculous. Loyalty to the employer cuts two ways anyway--the loyalty needs to come back too (though it doesn't always) and in this case it's kind of for services previously rendered--which include concussions and a very damage eye.
That said I can see Staal thinking--'well the penalty kill was good tonight' or 'we kept their top line from scoring more than a goal' and sometimes the team wins and like it or not he's part of that. So how he analyzes himself--how the coaching staff analyze him can be a very different animal from how most fans might analyze him. They might at least see some positives now and again where the fans see only negatives.
I'm pretty sure he's with us again this year. I have been for buying him out in the past--don't see it happening this year--maybe next though--the cap penalty won't be so bad with only one year left and it gives some of the young LD a year they might need to develop.

The coaching staff seems to feel he's contributing.....and, as mentioned by a number of people here, he was not our worst d-man last season. I would go so far as to say some would claim he wasn't even our second worst.
Yes he was. By a lot actually.
I can't speak to what hes contributing in the locker room between periods or on the bench or even between games but his on ice contributions are heavily in the red. He is not a good defenseman.

You also have to consider that he literally injured his brain and his vision for the contract he is currently on. He bled for his money.
Not even close.
Shattenkirk was basically the reverse Staal in the sense where his game got better after Jan 1. Staal over the last half of the season is the worst version of Staal we've ever seen.

Marc Staal has the same Girardi phenomenon where until he's literally getting dangled every shift people will fight to the death defending him and I really don't understand it.
At least Girardi was terrible at hard to track/read elements of the game. Staal is literally not good at anything requiring a hockey stick.

Really rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic here. Bottom line is that both were pretty putrid. There are reasons there are absolutely no takers for Shattenkirk.
Nah Shattenkirk was actually decent for half the year.
Staal went from the plague to a meteor striking earth.
We will have to agree to disagree. I thought Shattenkirk was awful. A third pairing PP specialist that does not play a lick of defense.

Being a PP specialist alone makes him better than Staal, because at least he’s decent at something. Staal is bad at everything. At least Shattenkirk can make plays at the offensive blueline, move the puck, be competent in that aspect. Staal is allergic to the puck, his puck handling skills have become beer league level stuff. They were never great, but f***, it’s truly pathetic at this point. IMO it’s bad enough that even IF he were good defensively, he’d still be a net negative. The fact that he’s also bad defensively makes him arguably the worst player in the league.

I don't understand what "playing defense" even is supposed to mean. The best defensive players don't need to play defense very often.
Is this supposed to be the premise that a good offense makes for a good defense because the players are so good offensively that they keep the puck in the other end all the time?
I think that premise has been debunked. Unless I am just completely not understanding the statement.
He is supposed to be a specialist. How special did hie look? Ok, let's say that he can play in the offensive zone. But the opposition gets around him pretty easily and he didn't exactly dominate offensive zone time.
Like I said, this is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
