Gun very much jumped. I was only asking in case he would be available cheaply next year if Tyutin is gone and Jack Johnson is the subject of a brilliant offer.

Columbus fan here in a quest for enlightenment. What is the situation with Staal? Do the Rangers want to move him and how badly? Does your front office regard him as an asset or an issue?

I think the team loves him still, but from my PoV, it seems clear that he lost half a step with the eye injury, and he has never, at any point, looked comfortable in AV's defensive system. I think in a different system, Staal can still anchor a 2nd pair. He's a good #3/4 dman with limited offense but great positioning and an active stick (with great reach). In AV's system, he just anchors the team, because he can't keep up with his man most of the time, which drags him out of position.

As a Ranger fan, I want him moved so that they can use his money to retain Yandle. That would give the Rangers D-pairs next year of McD/Klein, Yandle/McI, and Skjei/Girardi, which is the best I think we can hope for (in reality).

I do think he would play much better under Torts. The only possible concern is that Torts was essentially run out of town by his players. I have no idea if Staal was part of that group.

We lose every game he doesn't play in. Too difficult to see for sure but at least the last 3 or 4 (or 5?) he hasn't play in we have lost.

it is kinda a strange phenomenon.

same thing when McDonagh is out of the lineup, we always seem to win.

sample size is important, but its a curious phenomenon none the less.

Can someone explain Staal's NTC/NMC to me? What are the rules the first 3 years and the next 3 years?

On July 1 2017 he can be traded. He can turn in a list of 15 teams he does not want to go to but I believe once 7/1/17 rolls around he can be traded. I was just reading this earlier today but it could be what i read was mistaken

Not true. That is Girardi.

Marc Staal has a full NMC for the first 3 years of his contract (2015-2018) and a modified NTC for the final 3 years of his contract (2018-2021).

No-move-clauses are never limited, always full

I am aware that it's a "modified NTC" but what are the terms of it? How many teams can he block? What are the other restrictions?

According to NHL.com he has a full NTC in the first 3 years and a full NMC in the last 3, based on reports by ESPN:

Terms were not disclosed, but ESPN.com reported a six-year extension with an average annual value of $5.7 million, a full no-trade clause in the first three years and a full-no movement clause.

The deal has a full no-trade clause in the first three years and begins right away, according to the source. There is also a full no-move clause, which pertains only to waivers.

Maybe he's got me blocked? Lol

If true, that's awful. The guy should be moved to free up the cap space for Yandle, then give his spot to the better of Skjei or Graves.

What I'd like to see next year is:

McDonagh - Girardi
Yandle - McIlrath
Skjei - Klein

I know a lot of people prefer to move G before Staal, but we have such a dearth of RDs that we can't afford it unless we get another top-4 RD back. With Staal, I wouldn't mind just shipping him out for a bag of pucks. Maybe he'd accept a trade to a contender or to a team from a nice climate/city.

An awful season being salvaged by some great games lately. Vintage Staal, truly...

Why Moving Marc Staal this off-season doesn't make a lot of sense.

http://lastwordonsports.com/2016/07/20/what-to-do-with-marc-staal/

The Rangers have more options than either trading Staal to Carolina or buying him out.

They could play him and let him regain his value by giving him more favorable matchups.

They could trade him to literally any team who needs a LHD and take on another shorter but poisonous contract like his. They could trade him to a dumb team like Anaheim or Colorado.

Theres options. a lot of them. and frankly im not convinced Staal is as worthless as most people. Girardi on the other hand...oof.

The problem is his NMC and that teams would have to protect him.
After the expansion draft things could be different.

Frankly, I don't see either Edmonton or Carolina as an option. And I still could see LA be a landing spot.

One thing is for sure. Buying him out is not an option. Too much dead cap space. I just have the feeling that he will be in the starting lineup on opening night this year.

LA already has Brown and Gaborik on long term deals where they are getting less than what they pay for. Can't see them taking on Staal without sending one of those two back and I wouldnt do either straight up.

truth. I think he has the same contract as Girardi --

First 3 years: Full NTC
Last 3 years: Modified NTC

All on top of:
All 6 years: Full NMC

So yeah, he requires protection.

I;d do a straight swap. Would rather that money be tied up in a 3rd line position than a 2nd/3rd d pairing
