Marc Staal Update ("Feeling really good, no limitations")

The vision in the right eye is still slightly blurry. That is nothing new. He made a comment when he started skating after the injury last season about his left eye becoming stronger(compensates) after the injury. The pressure of the eye was causing Marc problems. They tried different eye drops and nothing worked. That was the issue. Only time would help the eye pressure regulate.
 
It sounds like the injury has healed the best it can, and Marc has made peace with it. Good for him. Looking forward to seeing him back out there. With all the time he's missed the last couple of years, he's become somewhat underrated.
 
The Rangers have never had a better defense. They lack an offensive D and a tough SOB. Hopefully McIlrath will fill the latter need in the near future. Not in the Cup year. Leetch was great. Zubov had a great year(so so in the playoffs) and was a very good player. Lowe was at the end of his career. Beukeboom was a good player. Not much after the top 4. Karpovtsev was a young player. Wells was at the end of his career. Lidster was a veteran guy who barely played and then was a key guy at the end. Not in 11-12. Bickel,Eminger and Stralman(better player today/more confident)were the third pair. Henrik in net. Depth at center. They just need more scoring from the wing. Nash will get in the 40 range. Callahan will miss the first few weeks. Even when he return,it might take some time to return to normal. They will need Kreider to be a contributor. He is the X factor. Kreider would give them another big body on the wing who provides offense and speed. 15-20 goals. He had 2 in 2013. The Rangers have 3 centers to get him and their other wingers the puck.

And John Moore is not easy target either; and should only get better as time goes by.

Pray tell; are you inferring thar our current defense is better than that of the 1994 Stanley Cup team?
 
If Staal is back to 100% or close to it when he gets back into it (A full training camp should give us an indication, but keep in mind hes usually a slow starter) the Rangers definitely are at the very top of the league with their defensive corps.

The addition of Falk and Jonhson gives them some good depth (especially Falk who I think is a solid player) and as others have mentioned Stralman is a very underrated player on both sides of the puck.

Girardi, Staal and McDonagh will be their usual solid selves, if DZ can take it to the next level (i think this is the last year we can say IF for him as hes 23 now) then this team might be in the league's elite. (Im talking like top 3)

This is fantastic news for Rangers fans, maybe the best news of the summer, outside of the McDonaugh signing and some will say the new coaching hire.
 
'94 Leetch and '94 Zubov are far better than anything this current Rangers team has. I'll concede that the current team's defensive depth is better, but I take the '94 team's six over the current team's six every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

All else being equal, give me the 1994 defense. There are a handful of performances since the 2005 lockout that come close to what Leetch and Zubov did in 1994. (Lidstrom 2x, Keith 1x, Karlsson 1x). There are no defensemen on the Rangers right now that can touch Zubov and Leetch. Give me two guys in the Norris race, one of whom is a top-five PP QB of all-time, and four orange cones. All day every day.

People conveniently forget just how great Zubov was; 2 time cup winner with close to 800 points who deserves consideration for the hall of fame.

'94 had two of the best offensive defensemen of that generation, one of which being an all-time great.

our current D has 2 all-star games, collectively. 2

Also, the defense currently doesn't have anyone as intimidating or who can clear the crease as good as Beukeboom did.

Yeah, the 1994 team had some very good specialized defensemen. The current team has six of the same type of player.

Agreed, but the 94 defense was definitely more well-rounded in the sense that they had a mix of players who were offensively gifted, defensively capable, and provided some physical prowess. So although Beuk may not have been as good as Staal, Girardi, or McD, he added an element that a Stanley Cup winning defense needs.

I think our current defense is a bit one-dimensional in that we have a lot of stay at home types who are generally good, but there is no one that stands out offensively (like Leetch or Zubov) or can clear the crease on a consistent basis (like Beuk).

Zubov had a great regular season. He disappeared in the playoffs especially against New Jersey and Vancouver. The Vancouver forwards made Zubov poop in his pants. Sergei saw Sergio Momesso in his nightmares. Leetch was great. Fantastic. Awesome. Tremendous. The overall depth on this team is better. Quality players. 1-6.

The Hawks have Seabrook and Keith but they weren't winning without Hammer and Oduya. Those two guys were huge for that team. Leddy and Rozsival. In the finals,Chicago rolled 5 D with Keith playing with Seabrook and Roszival. Leddy barely played.

Oduya was a very underrated signing. People called him overpaid but the guy can play a ton of minutes and move the puck. He fit that team very well on the 2nd pairing.

Chicago fans hated the signing, which I never got. Always liked Oduya (oh, yes I do).
