Didnt want to open a new thread and didn't get a chance to read through all of this, but are NYR fans worried about him going to Carolina in a couple of years?

Hmmm. Interesting question. I don't believe this topic has been broached.

I am reserving judgment on Staal until I see him in some game situations next month.

These half-assed quotes from several sources about how hes fine, yet his eye will never be 100% are contradictory and confusing.

Im glad he got through a skate and was able to do some drills without thinking about it, but the true test won't come until hes in game conditions.

I think like pretty much everyone on the planet, he's dying to blend in with the crowd and play with his siblings.

So yes, I'm worried.

Not worried at all. Unlike some people here, I think Marc's goal is to win a Stanley Cup. So, unless signing with Carolina gives him a better chance to do that then staying with the Rangers (or signing with a different team, maybe the one that Lundqvist signed with the year before:p:) he stays.

People forget that Eric and Jordan already have Stanley Cup rings.

Not really. Jordan going there was a completely different situation.

1) Pittsburgh is not NYC.
2) Marc's the best at his position on our team, he doesn't have 2 elite talents bumping him down to the 3rd pairing.
3) Jordan had already won a Cup with Pittsburgh.

Jordan had more reasons to request a trade than simply wanted to play with his bro.

Unless Cyclops regresses into a mediocre player and gets traded for a memorabilia of Booby Sanguinetti.

idk if this is a stupid question or not....but after reading an inyterview on blueshirts united with Staal , and him saying that his eye isnt 100% but close enough and his brain has adjusted i was wondering .... why cant he wear a contact lense in the one eye to mimick better vision in it....ive never had to wear glasses or anything so i qwasnt sure how this works....but idk..kinda makes sense in my twisted head....

I don't think it's something a contact can really fix. It seems more about total vision, than blurry vision. Expanding his vision to fully see around him isn't something contacts usually fix.

ok thx...cause my take from it was that he regained most vision but its not and will never be 100%%

so i was wondering why a contact lense couldnt help that....i guess my interpretation of his current vision is was wrong

Staal is starting to get back to where he was. Yesterday, He looked great. Could you see him getting back to where he was pre injuries?

Absolutely: every time he has had an injury, it's taken him a while to work back to his full game.

About Carolina: I think the worry about him going there is not that he really wants to go, but that the 'Canes might throw a ludicrous contract his way that makes no sense for the Rangers to contest. I doubt it, as it seems like a dumb way to run a franchise, but stranger things have happened.

He looks good. It was literally three or so weeks ago that someone on here was trying to tell me that Staal may never recover. Silly.

Getting the snarl back that made him so effective, great game for him and Strals yesterday

If Staal plays at the level he was just prior to his injury, well that's a huge positive for this team. It certainly seems to be heading in that direction.

There are very few better shut downs D men in the league. On top of that Staal has offensive upside which to this point has not really been tapped.

I've always loved Staal. Really glad to see him playing like himself again. Please give him an extension Sather.

In my eyes, Staal's play recently has been some of the best it's been in a long time. Despite not really being a "big hitter", I still think he's probably our most physical defenseman. Solid skating, strong balance and very effective with his stick work. In my opinion the ability to ice a defenseman of his caliber on our second pair is really one of the greatest strengths of this team. I think there's no question he's a legit top-pair caliber defenseman.

Which is exactly why Carolina scares me so much in light of his impending free agency.

Must of us are aware of the fact that 3 out of 4 brothers of the admittedly tight-knit Staal family already have been brought into the Carolina organization, with the team drafting mediocre at best prospect Jared and going out and trading for Jordan, but it gets even scarier when you look at the shape of Carolina's D the summer that Staal becomes a Free Agent.

The only defensemen their team will have under contract at that point will be Faulk, JM Liles, Jay Harrison and presumably Ryan Murphy still on his ELC. Faulk and Murphy, Carolina's two very promising young D, both happen to be offensively oriented and right handed. Obviously a lot can happen between now and then, but on paper, that defense sure seems to have a gaping hole fitted perfectly for a left handed, defensively oriented veteran defender, still in or at least very close to, his prime. A Staal-Faulk first pair being nothing to scoff at.

The Cap won't be an issue for Carolina either.

My guess is that if Staal reaches free agency, Carolina makes an offer at minimum in the neighborhood of $4.5 million for 4-5 years. If the Rangers end up resigning Girardi and/or Callahan this off-season, is that a number they can really afford to match, if not beat, to pay a second pairing defenseman on their team?

Considering the way the cap is going up Staal at $4.5 mill is a damn good deal assuming he stays healthy. His cap hit is already a shade under $4 mill and if it only went up $500k considering the cam will probably be mid to upper $70 mill in 2 years, then I take that and I run

Yeah, assuming he maintains his current level of play with no more major injuries, I could see him getting 5 million or more pretty easily on the open market.
