LA could be an interesting option. Malkin at this stage of his career probably signs a max of 3 years, maybe 2. He will need to take a haircut off his cap hit, obviously. The Kings don't seem to have any big names for high $ to re-sign (correct me if I'm wrong) and Dustin Brown's contract + Jeff Carter's retention is off the books.

edit: Kempe and Durzi need new deals. Still, with them being RFA I think they could make it work to sign Malkin if there was mutual interest.
Trevor Moore is going to get a big raise as well and they have 2 huge contracts already. Malkin is not a good fit unless he's ok with taking a big pay cut.

Sid took a stand previously that they couldn't trade Geno or he'd ask out too. If they don't give Geno a respectable offer to keep him, they could see a similar fall out.
I hate to say it, but maybe it's time? I don't think the Pens as currently constituted are real contenders anymore so keeping the Sid-Geno-Letang core together is pure nostalgia at this point.

There’s a ton of reasons why it made sense to trade rust Letang Doumlin and start fast tracking the rebuild however they aren’t going to

The opinions of Penguins fans hold no value/ importance to Burke, Hextall It makes no difference If Letang, Malkin are resigned or not to Habs fans it's just unlikely Burke , Hextall resign either player if Pittsburgh fail to advance past the 2nd rd . If Pittsburgh lose in the 1st rd which could easily happen it would make Letang , Malkin being resigned even less likely.

I agree but ownership does not. The Letang trade by Rutherford was shot down and all 3 are will most likely retire as penguins. There is NO chance sid leaves , zero chance malkin leaves and an ultra slim chance Letang moves on

Malkin isn't going anywhere. He's a guy who seems to like stability.
He'll sign in Pittsburgh for a few more years then finish his career in Magnitogorsk; full-circle.

Crosby isn't the decision maker management let Fleury leave and the same can happen with Letang , Malkin if Pittsburgh fail to advance past the 2nd rd . Burke, Hextall have no emotional /sentimental attachment to Letang , Malkin .

Burke , Hextall have no sentimental attachment to Letang , Malkin like the fans do unfortunately if Pittsburgh fail to advance past the 2nd rd then it could very easily be the last time Letang , Malkin play for the Pittsburgh Penguins .

Pretty sure Crosby's line in the sand is Geno, and it has been. They will listen to his input.

I feel like he's gonna want to go somewhere where he gets a steady high-end winger to play with. Someone's gonna come and tell me I'm wrong but Malkin hasn't had a good winger since hot-dog-prime Kessel.

The Pens let Fleury go because they had a 23 year old goalie coming off back -to-back Cup wins waiting to take over. The Pens have 0 legit prospects right now . If they don't resign Malkin and Letang it will be a full fledge rebuild, which new ownership likely isn't going to have the stomach for.

If Kessel is the standard for a good winger then there are many centers out there who have never had a good winger in their career.

He's re-signing with the Pens. Probably for somewhere between 7-8 mil. Maybe 3-ish years. That's really about it.
Yeah he's totally going to decline Colombus Blue Jackets max term offer

Yeah, I think the only way Malkin doesnt stay in Pittsburgh is he wants to go. Some oft mooted situation like Florida lures him down there to help get them over the hump to a cup. If he is good with 7M per, I dont think there is any way the Pens turn that down. But the allure of a new challenge in a sunny clime might be hard to resist.

Letang is a horse of a different color. If he has felt underpaid and wants to truly cash in with the highest bidder, I think he will do that. And should do that. If the Pens turn around and try to replace his game with someone like Klingberg in free agency at a lower cost, or swing a trade for a lower cost PMD on the right side, a la Mike Matheson. If would love it if we could swing something for Sam Girard, but I doubt we've got anything close enough to move the needle for Sakic.

Now, if the Pens playoff "run" is a complete disaster, a la 2019 or 2020, that changes things. If there are bad vibes, and Malkin/Letang want to go elsewhere for themselves, that would mean throwing out the playbook. If that's the case then the Pens probably retain Rust (who I've already written off in my mind as leaving) and maybe try to make a big splash via UFA with the 16M+ they just freed up.

The other aspect to consider is the ownership one. The Pens are a few months into being owned by FSG. If they let both Letang and Malkin walk, even if its the smart play for the money, they will be pilloried.
FSG at Liverpool let Steven Gerrard when he was aging, and he was arguably more of an icon than either Malkin or Letang are. Point being they can be ruthless when they need to be if it makes sense financially and sportingly.

I don't think there should be much doubt that Malkin will stay in Pittsburgh throughout his NHL career.
