Wow youth is being way over rated by some here. Yes SM is a very gifted and promising young talent, but we are talking about Malkin here, CGY takes this deal and runs for the hills. Top 10 player in the league in Malkin for a player who's if everything goes perfect in his career might not ever crack top 10. Some of these threads are just out of hand sometimes.

Why would a cup contending team trade an elite center for a good center? Monahan is a good center, not an elite one and I'm a Flames fan. If the Pens were in rebuild mode and the Flames moving to contender status it's a different scenario. I've watched every game Monahan has ever played in the NHL and lots of Malkin's. Monahan will never be the player Malkin is right now. Monahan is an excellent finisher and goal scoring totals will be similar, but Malkin drives the play and Monahan doesn't. Backlund drives the play better than Monahan and I'd say their value on the ice is very similar right now. That said, Monahan has more potential to grow since he's substantially younger.

I'd say Monahan is a borderline 1st line center. He's more similar to Mark Schiefele in that he can play the role of 1st line center than he is to Malkin or other elite #1 guys.

Maaaayybe if Malkin could keep his body together. His value is decreasing by each game he's missing.

Yeah, his value has decreased so much that he's barely a top 5 player in the league nowadays and the Pens barely managed to win the Cup last season

Malkin isn't a top five player anymore, and hes not the reason the pens won the cup. Malkin isn't even a top five forward. Crosby, Benn, Kane, Ovechkin, Kopitar, Bergeron, Tavares, Thornton, are all better.

Calgary answers with a simple NO . Yes Malkin is the better player right now , but for how much longer ? Then there the cap hit to consider . 3.15 million can sign a pretty good player .

So it comes down to

Monahan + a ufa signing for 3,150,000 for Malkin . I think I would go with Monahan plus a McGinn type of signing . You could even sign a couple of real good shut down bottom 6 players with that extra money

Malkin was recently voted 2nd best center in the hfboards center poll

Now a week later he's worse than Kopitar, Bergeron, Tavares and Thorton?

I didn't see fans of those players teams complaining.

Trying to win now. Pens say no. Hed be lucky to crack 50 points with rust and kunitz or sheary as his wingers, while geno will be over a ppg.

But from a flames perspective, they say no too. Younger, cheaper, healthier. Horrible trade idea for both teams

Geno is better than ovi,Thornton, bergy and tavares....ill give you kane and kopitar. I dont think you know who geno was playing with all playoffs. And still had 17 or 18 points iirc. Thornton, bergy, ovi and Tavares would do half of genos production with kunitz and rust at their wingers lo l

50 points is actually not that far off the pace Malkin was on since Kunitz-Malkin-Rust became a thing...

I know Malkin's injury didn't help but that was simply not a good line. As a Pens fan, I'd probably be a bit worried.

A. He had a 64 point pace
B. It was the playoffs
C. He was coming off an injury

That line wasn't great, but their production was certainly fine. His production was no more of an issue than Crosby's production.

That 64-point pace includes the Rangers series where I don't think his regular linemates were Kunitz and Rust. Wasn't he with Fehr then? After they tweaked his line, he scored something like 0+0 against Washington, 1+5 (including 0+2 on PP) against Tampa Bay and 2+1 against San Jose (2+0 on PP). Not all of that was with Kunitz and Rust but still.

I know it was the playoffs but, historically, Malkin's production doesn't tend to change much between regular season and postseason.

I already acknowledged the injury didn't help.

And I disagree that the line's production was fine. People will be complaining like no tomorrow if they repeat that performance. Just like they complained this year. I suffered through enough post-game threads and the like (yes, I know) to get a pretty good idea of how much people appreciated what Crosby and Malkin did. I believe the consensus was that both needed to be much better but at least Crosby had tough matchups, game-winning goals, leadership etc.

Lmao. The last four are a joke compared to Malkin. Btw Thornton? LOL.

Hold on to Malkin for a couple more years you may have to pay someone to take him. Especially with his salary and injury history.

And people wonder why the main board gets made fun of all of the time

You know, you can say "no thanks" to a proposal without making utterly stupid comments. Crazy, I know.

The word "may" is such a marvel. You can use it to express any zany idea and it's not technically wrong.

Malkin's no bigger risk than any other big money player. He has a better track record of production than any of them save Crosby, and he doesn't require anything in the way of linemates to maintain it.

LOL. Monahan is the next Bergeron. Who cares? Everyone is the next Bergeron. Who's the next Malkin? Will there ever be another Malkin?

Put Monahan over Malkin on any of those Cup teams, and the Pens wouldn't have a cup. Find a guy who can single handedly take over a game like Malkin and then talk. Why do they need Monahan when they already have Crosby?

Flames would need to add. Monahan is a good player, but this is Evgeni Malkin we are talking about.
