Systems play mostly. Sloppyness, carelessness, blown coverage. Stu isn't a world beater, but I don't really think he is the problem. In a perfect world, we would have someone better, but that isn't Blackwood. The only way I consider Blackwood, is if we wanted to move on from Pickard, but he's been pretty good for the most part once again, so despite being in favour of this idea a week ago, I think I've changed my mind- Blackwood isn't worth the extra cap. hit. That 2nd pair RHD spot is still the biggest hole to fix.

Honest question: what is it with Mackenzie Blackwood that make people think he could be a solid NHL starter? Is it that he was a second round pick? His one good year in the OHL? His one good year in the NHL, 5 years ago?

Because his name keeps coming up, and not in any of the conversations that they probably should pop up, like how he's overpaid despite making just over $2M per year.

He was arguably better than the other Sharks platoon goalie, waiver wire pickup Kaapo Kähkönen. Being better than him isn't a sign that you could be a solid starter.

He was definitely great, hasn't been the same so far this season but, yeah, he was great last season

By what measure? His save percentage was right around Kahkonen's, his GSAx had him in the Tristan Jarry / Alex Lyon range of goaltenders. And he didn't even do it with a starter's workload.

The fact that he stunk it up on an awful team doesn't mean he didn't stink it up.

Watch the two goals Florida scored in game 7.....

Stu is a good back up, he's not #1 material.

It's a combination of factors. He's got size, decent fundamentals, was a bright spot on SJ during their worst season since the 90s and was one on the lottery Devils before that. His "fancy stats" also put him somewhere around average, which is what the Oilers can't even get out of Skinner.

Is he probably fool's good? Sure, and my preference is really Soderblom since he's younger and his numbers better in every way this year. But Edmonton needs to try something (anything) to find their own Monty or Hill. The status quo won't do.

Skinner is a top 15 to 20 goalie in the NHL. Getting an improvement to what the Oilers already have would be advocating for someone like Hellebuyck, Sorokin or Vasilevsky.

It's not going to happen.

Yeah, but that's not average starter level. That's average NHL goalie. So a bad starter or good backup. He was 32nd in the league per Moneypuck, and 26th per Evolving Hockey.

His GSAx last season, his only somewhat good season since before COVID, was slgihtly better than Skinner per Moneypuck, and worse per Evolving Hockey. And Skinner actually had a starter's workload.

I genuinely don't see how Blackwood has proven to be a preferable alternative to Skinner, even if we ignore that he's 2 years older and hasn't been a full time starter over an entire season as a pro.

He makes tremendous saves at times that few can. But he cannot sustain it. He loses focus, loses position, and loses his confidence. On the right night you see a bona fide starring goalie. Then you see him over four games and he's given up 17 goals getting pulled in one. He's 2-2 in that span but one win was a good game, one was a 5-4 win where he only faced 25 shots and two are bad with goals going in from bad angles or through standard screens without changing direction. If he could ever get his psyche stabilized he would be great.

Thank you. This does actually explain people's infatuation with his potential.

Now, I don't agree with it, at all. He's about to turn 28 and hasn't shown that his consistency is improving. But it does explain why I keep threads popping up about trading for a goalie whom I consider to be on the level of off-year Brossoit.
