For all the doom & gloom, we’re currently 2-2 while learning a new system, with the kids not producing much, the vets looking decidedly mediocre at times, and a 4th line that’s just straight up ass. Before this game we led the league in xG/60.

We ain’t there yet, but I think the doomposting is a bit much. On the other hand, if by the end of the season things look anywhere near this bad, fire Drury & Laviolette, retain 50% on the 3 vets that’d get us the most back, fire sale the rest, and let’s try this rebuild thing again

I was watching a bit of the ducks game last night and it’s amazing how fast some of these teams are and play.

Our physical speed and our an ability to think fast is just a combination for failure in todays nhl.

Every time these guys just try to slow the play down they act like they’re going to put the other team in a K hole with how mind altering their “deception” is when they go slow.

“Haha you thought I was gonna pass there but I really passed over here!!” Meanwhile they gave enough time for the other team to get back on defense and back check them into oblivion forcing a dump and no chase. Rinse and repeat.

The only people they’re putting in a K hole are us the fans distorting time and reality with how slow they play.

Some might be missing the forest for the trees.

It’s game 4. Can we come to a consensus at least? Game 15-20 we can collectively panic and complain #WeNeverRebuildProperly
We need a couple of guys that can disrupt the game....change the flow and make other clubs think for a half second . As it is now we are back to being docile /timid for the most part . Maybe Othmann will get rushed and they trade for another 4th liner and do a mini revamp to add a bit more spark ? Waiting for the PP to handle all the scoring solves nothing especially when we don't play hard enough to draw them chances . Hopefully Drury is watching .

The team will be Jekyll and Hyde for the 1st quarter of the season (if not the first half) IMO we knew this already

We’ve seen the good. We’ve seen the mediocre. We’ve seen the bad. In 4 games.

The same tropes come out after bad games. We’re winning cups and complaining about Trochecks ice time after good games.

Othmann will be here eventually. We’re desperately need a shooter and agitator

I don't know why so many people are panicking so early in the season. We knew what the team's flaws were. 4 games shouldn't have us over the moon nor digging a grave.

We started the season 7-7-4 in 2014 when we won the President's trophy.

Uh... it's not the coach or the system.

This core is rotten, and our cost controlled all-star level talent never materialized. This rebuild is stillborn.

What does this make Adam Fox and K'Andre Miller?

NYR haven't has a center of of the quality of Zibanejad since the late 90's. Peak NYR Richards, Gomez, Nylander don't even come close.

NYR haven't had a winger of Panarin's quality since Jagr. His inconsistency nonwithstanding, he's an entire tier above both peak NYR Nash and Gaborik.

NYR haven't had a defenseman of the quality of Fox since Leetch.

I'm not buying this argument that we don't have the personnel.

as unwatchable as that garbage was I am not really pressed about it. we're going to have games where we look like this with onboarding the new system and culture.

if it's game 40 and we look like this with some consistency I would want the heads of every single player on this roster except Fox.

Fox is the second most expensive player on this team, and Miller is not an all-star.

You understand how this isn't a convincing argument.

Fox would be 2+ mil more as a UFA, and almost all teams are paying their star RFAs more money early so that they don't have to handle contracts extending into a player's mid 30's. So 'cost control' is no longer just about AAV, it's about the years of a player's career that they want to invest in.

23-31 is a far better situation than 27-34.

And insofar as only around 50 players make the all star game each season, that's less than two per team. More than half of them are UFA age. It's not a good heuristic for measuring player quality.

Now, Suburban Phoenix. Then, Long Island
Trocheck is *good not 20+ minutes good. He's not an elite player. He's not a player that should be leading any forward group in ice time. He's playing more than Zib, Kreids, and Panarin for crying out loud. This team is going nowhere this way.
Trocheck is getting ice time because a) Laviolette is using him as a defensive matchup center, b) he kills penalties, c) he takes a lot of defensive zone faceoffs, d) he’s on the first power play and e) he’s been as good as or better than any other Ranger forward. He’s not an elite player but he is a very good player who does a lot of things well and his contract is turning into a great value.

This is all true. If I’m being as honest as possible, it isn’t always the results that create the gloom and pessimism from me - it’s the quality of the product on the ice. We have a large collection of talent, honestly.

Ignoring salary and roster construction and just evaluating talent Mika, Kreider, Panarin would all be welcome on most teams. Trochek as well. The three kids would at least be given shots. Goodrow would be coveted as a bottom six vet. Trouba is viewed as one of the most punishing defensive D out there. Every team would love Lindy. Miller is a rising stud in many’s eyes. Schneider as well is viewed as a high upside physical RHD. Fox is Fox. Igor is Igor.

The problem is, somehow, this team is way less than the sum of its parts. Consistently. Regardless of the coach. Regardless of the system. Regardless of the line combos. We play slow. We have no team speed. Not just skating. Our puck movement has to be the absolute slowest in the league. Every team looks quick in transition and moving the puck compared to us, even teams that are much worse.

The effort is inconsistent. The overpassing has lingered for damn near a half decade at this point. How can’t that be coached out of a team? The puck movement and skating are both lacking. The defensive breakdowns and mental lapses are glaring. It all negates the results. Obviously I’d be singing a different tune if we won a Cup, but I can’t see it happening with this group and the problems that it has. And so even though we’re 2-2 and will probably finish comfortably in a playoff spot and maybe we’ll even win a round, it’s just that watching the team inspires no confidence. It feels like EVERY time I watch any other teams play I’m jealous of their speed and puck moving and creativity. The Rangers are the absolute opposite of exciting hockey.

The Rangers are like expecting to watch the newest Avengers movie and accidentally ending up watching a documentary about the making of the Avengers instead. Every time. Like, you never get the action packed exciting viewing experience you’re hoping for. It’s always the slow disappointment.

The Rangers two best players, not counting Igor, is Fox and Panarin. What is their speciality? Their specialty is to slow the damn game down. Are you surprised Laf and Kakko eg are trying to do the same? If this team had Mackinnon and Makar whose specialty is to make plays at speed the team would look a lot different.

This team has never been assembled with any deeper thought behind it. Management have been satisfied with adding whatever decent piece has presented itself or dropped in their laps. And the Ranger way is to shoehorn whatever pieces they have into the Ranger idea of hockey, which is basically, let the stars do their starry stuff, but hockey has moved on. The team game has evolved.

He should not be on the first Powerplay. He’s a net front guy and we already have Kreider
