Kadri for kerflower and Barrie
Hyman letting him walk fir free

Dubas never building the D
Dubas and his crew didn't even want a 6th round pick from Edmonton because it's worthless.

They also hate trading a 6th round away because it's a waste of assets.

Now you know what happens when you blow all your assets. You have a bare cupboard. A lack of foresight. The good news? This will expose the top 4 model. Sink or swim, no more crutches. We also have no picks to throw away next year either. Dubas was junk.

People act like a 3rd, and not even this years 3rd, and a 6th are some big price It's not.

3rds and 6ths are easily recouped because they are 3rds and 6ths.

Yeah you can get Mark Stone in the 6th round, or Point in the 3rd but the reality is if Ottawa or Tamoa knew what they were doing in those drafts neither Stone, Nor Point go where they did, they both would have been 1st round picks.

Once you get past the the top 5, MAYBE top 10 if It's considered a deep draft, It's just a guess at that point, an educated one perhaps but still just a guess.

Once you get past round 2, It's not even an educated guess anymore at that point, at that point It's just throwing shit at the wall and hoping it sticks.

The ONLY picks that truly matter are 1st round picks, and last I checked we still have ours.

Fine with it. The cost is irrelevant. Would have rathered Zadorov for a similar price but there was likely issues preventing that trade from happening.

Did we also get the prospect? Is he anything?

1) Obviously not the 1st pairing D we hoped for. But he allows everyone to slot in properly making the other 2 pairings better. Nobody wants to see Brodie back on the right side.

2) We still have 23 regular season games to play. Not having to scramble around with 6LDs for those games is a win in itself.

3) Having another NHL D man allows us to give Lily, Gio, or whomever the rest they need down the stretch. It's not always about how well you play but how much fresher everyone else can be.

It's fine.

A 3rd is more than I'd prefer to pay for a guy of his limited abilities. But he brings physicality + PKing.

The cost of retention was lower than anticipated which is nice.

Ideally they bring in one more D man of higher impact.
4th would have been ideal but I'm fine with the 3rd since they could risk striking out completely or be left paying for a player that doesn't really fit their roster; not a lot of Plan B's out there.

They let him go because he was getting 2.75 m and now we are getting him for 0.675 m. Big difference.

One of the major tenets of the Leafs studs'n'duds roster building philosophy is replacing expensive mid tier players with effective rookies on elc's.

But the problem is the Leafs top heavy cap structure squeezed out all the mid tier players before they could be replaced. So the team has been forced to make offseason gambles every year to fill out the roster. Then when those players don't work out the Leafs need to move even more assets to fix those holes during the regular season.

The result is they bleed those same picks and prospects they should be using to fortify the roster with plugs like Lyubushkin every year instead.

The only move he needed to make was bringing in a partner for Rielly, and he brought in someone who proved he couldn't handle that. Treliving is so useless
Again blame Dubas for leaving an empty cupboard. One round in 5 years leaving a team worse than which he inherited, pathetic all those dubasites supporting a loser because he looked like them.

I was thinking over the past few days how this was a likely outcome. Needed a right handed defenseman, preferably with size. No second round pick, and a stated preference not to part with our first or any of our top prospects for a rental player. Put that all in a blender, and what you get is a player like Lyubushkin. I imagine Treliving also liked the fact that he was familiar to the team and to Sheldon Keefe.

Is he the answer? No, obviously not. Would I have rather seen a meaningful upgrade at RD? Yes, 100%. Was that option out there for a price that reasonably made sense? Probably not.

why are so many posts here about dubas lol

Lyubushkin is worse than nothing. He can't handle the puck, at all. If he's playing in the playoffs he will probably give the puck away at a crucial time. He sucks. Every defensemen we've played this year are better, standing pat is better than doing this. It has nothing to do with how many draft picks we have.

We need size, we need a guy to box out the front of the net, we need a guy who owns the boards, we need a right hand. He can't pass, he's limited no doubt but there's no question he adds something to the group. He beat out Holl and Lil to start the playoffs for us, it wasn't without merit. Is he Tanev? Nope. But we're also screwed asset wise, so I'll take this as a good depth D add.
Exactly the type of player to acquire, cheap and fills a need, now go get Peeke and the right side is fixed without paying a king’s ransom………

Shouldn’t the question be, why isn’t morgan propping those players up if he’s supposed to be a #1 dman?
The answer is on a good day he is a #2 and on a bad day is a really good #3, most leaf fans wouldn't know what a #1 d-man is if it bit him in the ass. We've been told for so long Morgan is a #1 that we have lowered our standards. Makar is a #1, Hughes is a #1, Hedman is a #1, Heiskanen is a #1, Morgan is not a #1. Morgan can for short stretches play like a #1 against teams having off nights but he is not nor has he ever been a true #1.
