Just to get some perspective, how much did Dubas pay to get Lyubushkin?

Just checked: it was a second rounder! (Along w another bad contract).

Are we even sure he's better than Benoit or Lagesson?
He’s a right shot RD. Liljegren is their only other right shot D. Benoit is a left shot LD. Likely pairings are:
Reilly / Lilly
Benoit / McCabe
Brody / Boosh

Underwhelming player, but with the limited assets we have and what's left on the board this is what you can get.

He fills a role for us though, big and physical, can PK, and is a right shot, and he comes back with some familiarity in the room with systems and with Keefe and the team.

I dont see how he doesn't

I also think the leafs are gonna get that 6th rd pick back via trading Connor Timmins or Lagesson to a team
The Leafs still have 3 x 5th round and 2 x 7th round picks this year.

Feels like there is more to come on RHD.

Didn’t like the Schenn deal and happily ate crow with how he played, and turned out to be a terrific feel good player.

Interested to see what we look like on RHD after the TDL and after UFA.

Interesting time right now.

All things equal, playing Benoit, Lagesson, Lyubushkin is not the best. We definitely need someone in the 2 spot with those size and toughness attributes though.
Lyubushkin replaces Lagesson on RD. Benoit is LD with McCabe and are a solid pair.

Would have preferred using the min assets we have to pile up on one impact D. Just not sure Libby is better than what they currently have outside of depth.

Fire all the scouts and hire more pro scouts. They need help. Draft shmaft. So many tossed away picks for so many mediocre players over the years.

Now traded a 2nd, 3rd & 6th for Lyubushkin :thumbu:
No it was a 3rd in a 6th for Lybushkin. They did trade a conditional second in along with Nick Richie for Lyubuskin in 2022 . Arizona chose the second round pick in 2025 rather than a third round pick in 2023. Obviously, they are separate trades.

Sigh.

Some rose coloured glasses when it comes to Boosh around here.. he's nothing special and isn't the top 4 guy we need here. His first stint as a Leaf was meh at best.

Waste of assets IMO .. We'll the same kind of criticism Dubas is getting now from moves in previous years.

Hate throwing away picks like this.

He's not going to though... it's just for Carolina to send back consideration in their part of the trade I'd think... he's not even really AHL material.

It's interesting. I don't know anything about Kirill Slepets, but I wondered, when I first heard about the deal, if Carolina simply wanted to open up a contract spot as part of agreeing to eat a little salary, but then I read that Slepets doesn't even have a contract.

Does it seem realistic that they traded for him to be a 7? Why spend for that? I can't see it, even though thats a better fit for his skills than top 4. They got him to play him.

Unquestionably they got him to play him.

They need a right shot defenseman and they needed more physicality on the back end, and he, at the very least, provides both.

By no means is he an exciting pick up, but I think the Leafs defense is undoubtably better and that's all that matters.

Who is wearing these glasses? He's a depth player. He is not going to repeat what Schenn did.

It really speaks to how depleted our assets are when a 3rd and a 6th going out on a contender feels like a major blow, and it's for a right defender when we don't even have one right now.
Some people over value things that they can recoup in a simple trade call… the deadlines not over, Treliving could easily make a move for picks before the deadline.

Also, I think our fanbase loses sight of where we’re at some times. There use to be a time when we had limited assets and no #1 centre.

We have some Ferraris, lambo’s and Mercedes and people are whining that we don’t get to pick a 3rd round mystery box. Have some gratitude. 🙏

Lots of teams would kill to be in our position. We have youth playing, youth in the system… and our 1st rd pick. Could things be better? Sure, just like some prick on Bay street with 2 million is stressing over how he wants 4 million.

At the end of the day we could have acquired McDavid today for nothing and it still guarantees you absolutely nothing.

I mean…eh. 687.5, UFA, that’s not horrible.

He’s better than Holl because he knows his role but hopefully he’s learned to not take too many penalties.

for giving up all those picks the only thing Leafs got back was Lybushkin two separate times.
