I thought he was better against the Canadians. Latvia isn't much of a challenge. Not his fault, but I want to see how players perform under pressure. Latvia wasn't going to do that, ever.

He was the most dangerous player on the ice vs USA. Always in motion and finding those open areas around the net.

Even though we probably won't see him for a couple of years, he looks NHL-ready to me.

He looks like Granlund who isn't afraid to shoot, and is maybe a bit stronger. Not as good of a passer.

In other words he's not like Granlund.

Well, he seems to have the same frame, average speed like Granny, and possibly his best asset is his brain, like MiG. Kaprizov is a good passer, it's just that Granlund is one of the best I've ever seen. Both have very good hands.

Kaprizov also seems to fall down a lot like Granlund. I worry about his lack of size and speed. I see Pulkinnen like qualities, also.

It's actually not a terrible comparison in terms of build, athleticism, and smarts. Both little crafty playmakers who lack great top end speed.

I'm fine with thinking of him as a shoot first Granlund.

If Yakupov had half the IQ and instincts of this kid, he would be a top 5 forward.

good point.

If you can go back in time and see the descriptions of Yakupov, you'll see him being described as having a high hockey IQ.

This kid has looked so good. I don't really care too much about the points as he is bound to rack some up against the bad teams. What impresses me the most is how heads up he plays and skill with the puck on his stick.

Excited to see him come to the NHL

Scouting on Yakupov was off. Fawning, not analytical enough.

But the evidence was everywhere. In his final WJC he was terrible: positionally unsound, easily frustrated, not seeing the ice, not sharing the puck well.

Easily IMO.
Wouldn't go that far, considering a bunch of rookies from that class are already making an impact in the NHL (McDavid, Eichel, Marner, Hanifin, Provorov, Werenski, Aho, Rantanen, Konecny, Carlo), with guys like Zacha, Meier, Beauvillier, and Crouse are up but aren't making an impact. Plus there is the glut of guys who are close to ready but still in the AHL or Jr (Erikson-Ek, D. Strome, Chabot, Barzal, Boeser, Roslovic). I don't get how he can say he would easily be top 10 in a re-draft.

If he wasn't Russian, I bet he would. His talent level is absurd and he has been making an impact against men for 3 years now. But then again, as you pointed out it was a very good draft so it's possible he would slip to around 15. Personally, I'd consider him over all except McEichel, Marner, Prov, Werenski, Hanifin and Rantanen. I think he would be having a similar impact to Aho and Konecny if he were overseas. Eriksson Ek, Barzal, Boeser, Chabot also look similar from talent level. Very clearly in the 8-15 range, so I guess you are right that "easily" was a bit much...but I did put IMO in there for that reason.

Semantics matter :) Especially since its all text here! I'm also super excited about Kaprizov since he is basically the Wild's test pick back into Russian waters since ... Voloshenko?

Easily? Would argue no. In the conversation? For sure. Although I'm a pessimist and always enjoy looking at the flaws over talents. I'm still waiting to see if he can translate his size and play to the NHL. But I'm wishy washy as **** so thats just me haha

I think, Kaprizov is going to be on par with Tarasenko and Panarin. And it's not top10, but top5 at least.

You're right. I would certainly trade him in a flash for McD, Eichel, Marner, Hanifin, Provorov, Werenski. Probably Rantanen and Konecny, maybe Ek, maybe Boeser. Between the others and Kaprizov it's a crapshoot(haven't kept up with Aho, so don't know).

I'd say he would slot in at 15-20. He simply doesn't have the overwhelming athleticism that I associate with a top pick, and his particular draft year is strong.

Enough with the Boo-hoo about him being Russian. Jared Spurgeon was picked in the 6th round and his GM didn't even offer him a contract. Now he's a top 2 Dman. Knowing what we know now, should he have been a first rounder? Last I looked, he's not a Russian

Well, you've seen him far more than I, so I respect what you have to say. I just think Tarasenko is far stronger and faster, with a cannon of a shot ( he's what Yak was supposed to be), and Panarin is quicker and slicker.

He's still very young, and has plenty of time to grow. I think playing another year in the KHL will be perfect for him...maybe get his feet wet in the AHL after that, and go from there.

They all play different, and Kaprizov somehow manages to score a lot. He's much better around the net, so he will keep scoring.
