LW Quentin Musty - Sudbury Wolves, OHL (2023, 26th, SJS)

Musty is a terrible skater that plays a perimeter game. He is more of a finesse player that needs to work on his shot. More of a playmaker that has a great toolbox but is lacking in the tools.

I know exactly what I’m talking about re: this prospect
Not accurate. His shot is elite, always has been. His playmaking skills have improved immensely this season, something he really struggled with last season with using his teammates and making the simple/smart pass. Yes his skating needs work, but I wouldn't say he plays solely a perimeter game. He has some power forward to his game, can play a power game but also has finesse. An interesting prospect if he puts it all together, and signs are starting to show him doing just that with his current breakout season. IMO he could be a late 1st rounder

It was a satirical post - I appriciate the input about his game though. I also think he could go a lot higher than late first.

never seen him play but from sudbury people i've talked to there are(were?) significant consistency issues

maybe those have resolved?
Yes, the Wolves fired their coach after the Oct 29 game and it was a turning point in the season.

Stats for Musty:

Pre-Oct 29, 11 games, pointless in 5 of those games, 0.9 PPG overall.

Since Oct 29, 13 games, points in every game, 2.15 PPG.

I haven't been to a Wolves game in over a month because I've been pre-occupied with other stuff, but according to Sudbury's local media both games this past weekend sold out. Seems things are turning around on the ice, but Wolves are still in 9th place.

I've seen Musty play in person 6 times now I believe, I really like him as a prospect. I've only seen him twice since the coach change. Hoping to see more in the new year.

I like him a lot, he does it all, great passer and shooter.

Not a bad take.

A little high for me, but IMO he's definitely gone before 20.

I don't see the huge separation between Musty and Calum Ritchie, who so far is consistently ranked inside the Top 10.
In terms of pure talent, he's in an extremely high tier. Size, puck skills, release, creativity are all there. I think if it clicks (and I think it will) he could be a whale of a player and extremely difficult to defend.

My biggest concern is his processing speed and decision making. He definitely needs to improve his consistency in those areas.

With how quickly he gets his shot away, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't become at least a 15-20 goal scoring NHL player.

Great analysis here. I agree. I rank him pretty high based on his raw tools and size.

His slow start really have people a negative assessment of his game. But, he has really heated up his offensive game recently (24 points in last 10 games). I wouldn’t be mad if my team drafted him top 15.

Why does no one have him top 15/20?
Because I watched him live at the U18s and didn't like his play. He has an elite hands and shot, but doesn't move around well, and isn't great defensively. Lots of prospects I like better.

I might get him into that 20th range, I don't know.. the draft is deep and Musty does have a lot of good things going for him, but I've questioned the hockey IQ a lot.
Guy gets a lot of assists for someone with terrible hockey IQ. Not sure I can think of many guys who put up a lot of assists but had serious IQ issues.

Yakupov is probably a good example, I was struggling to think of cases myself
If I remember correctly, Pulju's IQ concerns were brushed over because he showcased some good playmaking at WJC and Liiga during his draft year. And he had very respectable assist totals.

And I don't necessarily think that Musty's hockey IQ is terrible. He has showcased great vision and ability to create passing lanes with his skill + size combo, but from what I've seen he also makes questionable and reckless decisions pretty regularly. But to his credit, the amount of chances he is able to create at this level is very high, thus the production.

My biggest issue with someone like Lambert last year, who I thought had/has low IQ, was he tries to do too much on his own and doesn't use his linemates.

I think someone like Musty is a lot more willing to use the players on his line to create chances. (That's not to say he doesn't have IQ concerns in other respects.)
