To be honest he did get muscled off of the puck quite a bit I noticed. He'll get better at that though, and he is playing against men. When he has his feet moving he's a lot better at protecting the puck with his frame and reach, but when he's slower or standing still in a scrum he can get bodied off of the puck pretty easily.

He had a couple of standing 1 on 1's where he outpowered the Canadian, got the puck and created a scoring chance. And these are not Hungary players....

I'd have to watch again. I remember a couple of times where he tried to control the puck on the wall and got muscled into the boards. I think once it was Gallagher and I can't remember the other guy who did it. He needs to get a little more meat in his ass like Jagr , but you're right, hes 18 and facing Canada, nothing to be too concerned about yet.

Really? Then he missed the net many times, which is not typical for Laine. Don't know, since on medium quality stream you can't say for sure since his shots are so quick.

It may be also so that stats are not 100% correct on that. Anyhow I remember that he made good attempts on a few occasions, and couple of setups for his team mates too.

Anyone making a shift-by-shift video?

Yeah. Once Barkov bulked up, he has looked unstoppable. No doubt some Jagr influence there. :)

Take it with a grain of salt, I think he had more than 1 too, not that SOG really matter, but it is frustrating seeing two different sites report two different stats lol.

He got muscled and outplayed early in the game, but he did again learn very quick to avoid being too slow. In fact that was true for many other Finns too today. Canada was a bit of shock in the beginning when compared to Slovaks, French and even USA.

It seems that when the stakes are getting bigger, Laine is getting better at the same time. He played a really good game today if you compare this game to his previous game against Slovakia.

I wonder what the new narrative against him will be, my guess "Can't handle NHL physicality" :sarcasm:

Yeah, well.. If NHL physicality is the cheap shot "game" what Perry plays, who could without being hospitalized for atleast half of the season? :shakehead

Hopefully he plays in next game and didn't hurt himself more than that.

I think my favorite moment from him might've been when he went behind the net to strip I think Ellis from the puck and created a good scoring chance for his line mate. Really liked that pro-activeness on the forecheck from him.

Best all around game from Laine in tournament. Had a breakaway, one onetimer, created 4 AAA chances with a pass, too. Played really well defensively and won physical battles against well rounded canadians. My favourite one was when he went to forecheck behind the net, hit the canadien defender out of puck and dished AAA scoring chance in the slot.

There's no way his long season wouldn't affect his game during this time of year. But on the other hand, I have to say the gap between Laine and Puljujärvi isn't so big as expected.

Yes, that was definitely his best play today and probably of the tournament. Shame it didn't result in a goal, but oh well, they don't always go in.

I think the entire top 3 is quite close. Laine and Matthews are ahead by a bit, but Pulju is a brilliant prospect too. Matthews has the most polished and well-rounded game atm for sure.

The most important thing, and which is very consistent with his performance this year, he elevates his game and makes the smarter plays when the going gets tough and opponents level rises.
