I think the entire top 3 is quite close. Laine and Matthews are ahead by a bit, but Pulju is a brilliant prospect too. Matthews has the most polished and well-rounded game atm for sure.

Such a shame that Pulju isn't in this tourney, he would have had a chance to remind everyone just how close he really is to both Laine and Matthews.

Gots to love this year top 3.

i would be surprised if Laine did not break something of hes leg. He had problems after game too with hes moving. Perry and Hall was both total idiots. There was no even one reason for that.

Laine looked great this game, probably his best performance regardless of not getting on the score sheet.

Looked comfortable and totally at home against a strong Canadian team.

In other news, Perry is still an idiot as always!

I thought that this game was by far Laine's best. There still were some poor plays but overall he was IMO the best player in his team, the best player in the game even. Numerous scoring chances while his team was mostly on a drought, a few excellent passes, good forechecking and outmuscling, all against high end NHL players. The team doctor also told him to go to the locker room and he argued back and wanted to test it and in the end continued playing.

I love Laine's lack of respect for Canada today. He has a knack for getting open and to me at least his skating doesn't seem to be an issue at all. He already has pretty good too end speed and seems to have good balance and edge work though he can of course out on some muscle and build his strength.

Some people called this goal below softie after seeing it right away, but looking on the angle that gives you a good look at technique, he got chance to really blast it on full power. Like how he kicks the other leg off, bit like javelin thrower, to get maximum power. And it was not on the logo, but next to post so it went in. Nice goal.

With 1080p mode on you can see how he whips the shot and how fast the puck goes in that quarter of real time slow mo, it's ridiculous hard shot. No chance for reaction goalie, it's all about positioning on shot like that. The puck can be barely seen but you can regonize how fast it moves once u spot it.

It was shinpad on shinpad and the impact wasn't that great. I'd be 100% shocked if Laine wasn't fine and ready to go the next game. Especially considering he played the rest of the game.

Yeah if his skating isn't an issue on big ice against the likes of McDavid, Duchene, Reinhart and Domi, his skating won't be an issue in the NHL either. Especially since he is 18 and can develop that part a lot by simple leg muscle training like a lot of other big bodied players before him (look at Barkov for example, he was a worse skater than Laine at 18).

His ceiling is unreal.

How would you compare Sebastian Aho with Puljujärvi? He's one year older and the style is totally different, but if we were to estimate the total future quality?

If Matthews is 100% and Laine 97%, how good are Puljujärvi and Aho if you would rate each one with a % number?

Not sure yet, Aho was surely a steal for the Hurricanes: Smart, great two-way game, great hockey IQ and fast as well, but I want to see how he does in the NHL and if he is able to bulk up well. I think putting arbitrary percentages is unnecessary. All of them have elite potential at their peak.

Thank you. I thought it was a bit of a cheap goal when I saw it in game and replays, but that video puts it in perspective. As a goalie you have absolutely no time to react to that shot. If the goalie is not in position to stop it by just standing there and having something in front of it, there's no time to react at all. You can't even see the puck in slow motion until it's in the back of the net. Humans can't react fast enough for that, it's all about how much you can cover with basic positioning and how good is the aim of the shooter. Very impressive.

During the game against Canada, the Czechs commentators mentioned American players complaining about Laine's behavior, allegedly he was acting in an arrogant, disrespectful manner and insulting the U.S. captain. An American player should say "someone is going to find him on ice sooner rather than later" or something along those lines. I wonder if that Perry incident had something to do with this, even though Perry is a *** anyway.

Laine was fine today but nothing otherwordly to be honest, people should really slow the hype train down a bit. I'm still not sold on his skating and overall hockey sense.

If some one knows laine like from facebook and reads this, don't be unafraid to tell Laine that he did good job against agitating today, and these first games are most important when he encounters stuff like that. If he gets known as "hot guy" who always gets agitated, he'll just face it way more. If he continues like this, it'll be less effective -> done less against him.

Canada focused more to 18 year old Laine than winning the game that it's so laughable. Those Perry and Hall "classy" aim his knees was so bad that i hope they understand that Laine is monster size already and when he gets more physics and muscle in few years, he will rip both of them head of if he want to.

I think Laine also harass some of Canada players back with smiling few times when Canada players first start and Canada players get tumbled even more.

Also imo it was Laine's best game this WHC, he didn't get points (McDavid, Perry, Hall, Barkov, Koivu etc. didn't either) but he show that he can play against anyone in world and play them out, he have few good scoring change and made some of scoring chances to his linemates and he is just 18 and this was his 101 game this year.

Absolutely what I mean't. Some times TV slow motion from the roof of the arena gives different view than following it ice level. Nice technique on that shot, too. Knows how to transfer all the weight on the shot. No wonder they've talked about his stick flex. He lifts the weightless skate off the ice to get more effect and transfers weight on stick side.

I hope you're right. The angle looked really awkward to me. Was clearly dirty play by Perry. I'm sure he regrets it little bit. I have always liked him. He's not that kind of player.

One thing about Laine that I've noticed and that today's game seemed to confirm is how passionate he is. Not quite drive like say someone like Crosby has, but more like what you see in PK Subban or even Ovechkin.

I hope this game shutsdown the comments that he can't play against good teams.
Really liked his effort in todays game, he was willing to throw his body to block shots and made some defensive plays.

He had few weak passes but they were all in the offensive zone which didn't cause any damage.

Gotta love Laine with the confident attitude he brings on the ice.
And yeah, the US also went after Laine in their game vs Finland. Did that happen to Laine during the Liiga playoffs?
