Oh boy. I'm not sure where you guys get this argument but it has very little to do with reality. If you take a look at the actual numbers you can very clearly see that Tappara this year were an exceptionally deep team in terms of offensive production. In fact they had 6 forwards score 15 goals or more (most in the league) and 8 forwards had atleast 30 points (most in the league; Kärpät, Lukko and HIFK were second with 5 each). It's clear that the 2nd and 3rd liners aren't quite as good as the 1st liners (duh), but still it baffles me to read all this utter nonsense about lacking depth and having boatloads of 4th liners.

Reading posts like these, people who don't follow the league could easily get the idea that he's leading a bunch of scrubs to the championship. The fact of the matter is that they've now been to the finals 4 years in a row. This year was the first time they actually won it, but its not like they haven't been close before (actually lost in game 7 overtime last year AND the year before).

O'boy I get it that you are a diehard Tappara fan and cannot see any fault in the organization. In the real world though, the team really isn't that good in terms of deepness. Keeping Laine off the 1st line is telling that alone. If you look at Kärpät or HIFK for example, you can mix all kinds of line combinations without having to worry about lacking offensive talent. Laine's goals/assists ratio would have been a whole lot different if he played with truly capable line mates who were able to finish and create plays. Lajunen is a good center and even he is not elite in FEL standards. Beyond Lajunen Tappara didn't really have much playmaking men in the middle.

And truth be told. Were there no Laine, there'd be no gold celebration yesterday in Tampere.
In my opinion there's practically no chance he would've been able to do that, because..

Well it's natural for a young player to develope as the season goes on and Laine has that rare ability to gear up the further he gets and the higher the stakes go. You don't score PPG unless you get 1st line minutes in FEL and for a guy playing 2nd or 3rd line minutes he scored pretty decent point total no matter how you look at it. Playing 18-20minutes with a top 3 winger Laine would have scored PPG had he played first line. Sure, that's speculation but I guess we'll never know, won't we. Regardless I'm happy he took the harder route as it grows character having to earn your success.

What? Now Tappara didn't have depth?

It's probably the deepest team in Liiga in terms of forwards.

Still it's tough to say where exactly that ceiling is. A lot depends on how much he can improve his acceleration. If he can get more power in those first few steps then he could become something really special and be nearly unstoppable. That wrister of his is already totally ridiculous. I've never seen anything like it around here before.

Let us whisper of a dream... :edmonton

I'd say he can improve it a lot if you see the progress during past year along. I think he got the right genes.

You never know. Maybe he has peaked already. And it's downfall hereon. It was a legitimate concern around here when Barky was going to the draft, so I guess we should point out this possibility this time also.

What? Seriously?

It was argument used by some posters who called finns for homerism when barkov (now lady byng nomine btw just published) was hyped by posters who actually followed his games and happened to be Finns.

If you compare how Barkov's and Laine's linemates produced it seems that Sasha played with better players. I don't think it's wise to only look at points produced when comparing players since TOI, pp time, linemates etc. affect a lot.

Laine:
Jukka Peltola 17+22=39 points, 59 games, 0,66 points per game
Jan-Mikael Järvinen 11+25=36 points, 59 games, 0,61 points per game

Barkov:
Jannik Hansen 7+10=17 points, 20 games, 0,85 points per game
Ville Nieminen 22+28=50 points, 57 games, 0,88 points per game
Henrik Haapala 3+10=13 points, 32 games, 0,41 points per game

PS. I hope I got right players there :D.

My question(fear) with Laine in Edmonton is this, if Edmonton picks him and he becomes successfull while playing with McDavid, would he get beaten down in every thread with yeah because of McDavid post?

Yes, by countrymen posters of McDavid.

Not by any knowledgable hockey fan, which is the only opinion that might hold any merit. There is just as strong a chance that McDavid benefits from Laine's one-timer that very few in the game possess.

Does anyone scoff at Jagr's numbers because he started his career playing with Mario?

As a fan of Team Finland, these last couple of years have been INCREDIBLE for Finnish prospects. I was very surprised when Barkov went 2nd overall - I thought Nashville was a great fit for him at #4 - but he's transitioned very well and looks to be Finland's 1C for a long, long time.

I still think Laine goes 2nd overall, but I'm thrilled that he's even in the conversation for 1st overall this close to the draft! I'm excited to see where he goes, kind of hoping for Toronto.

Hopefully he can take after John Tavares and improve his skating a lot after being drafted. He may never be truly explosive, but hopefully some improvement in acceleration can combine with his hockey sense to compensate for this.

That's what I'd like to see, him getting the respect he deserves, but it would be such a easy comment and I was thinking all the vs threads/polls we are going to see here at HF so you never know

Would definitely think that McDavid would love to have a player like Laine on his line and he would(potentially) make McDavid better.

Good point. I didn't even think about that, but perhaps after some time the fans would recognize Laine is doing a lot as well and other of them would get injured eventually and then the fans would get reminded what they can do with other teammates around them.

Long way for that to happen though. I predict that he goes to Phoenix Coyotes just because it's my least favorite option probably.

It's guaranteed his skating will improve. Like you said he will never be the explosive fastest guy on the ice but he can be a good skater.
