He plays with a very long stick that limits the finer stickwork. Passing is fine, deke passing is not.

I have not seen his long stick affecting him negatively in any respect. He has the best hands in Finnish hockey along with Donskoi (who also uses a long stick). He can do it all with the puck, although I'm not really sure what "deke passing" is. Assuming it's deking and passing in one fluid motion, he can do it. He could be a damn fine playmaker if he didn't have that goal scorer's shoot-first mentality.

I always thought having a long stick helps you with deking? Even heard some people use longer sticks than they usually do for SO. Anyways the man can deke.

That's not true. It's much easier to deke the shorter your stick is.

Short sticks are called "kynämaila" in Finnish.

But like said it doesn't matter in Laines case because he can deke even with that extralong stick.

That's not true either. I personally thought it would be easier having a junior stick in my hands. After a while I changed to my second stick which is a full senior and handling the puck felt much more smooth and faster. The shorter your stick is the more your hands have to do the work. But if you have Patrick Kane hands it doesn't really matter. Some players deke better with shorter sticks while others don't. If your hands aren't fast and smooth enough the shorter one actually makes it worse. I'm not Laine or professional player but in past months I've realized this.

Shorter sticks help with your release to go faster tho. But Laine doesn't need help in there.

Will Laine be playing vs Russia today? I guess not yet, but i really hope so, so i know if i should watch the game or not :)

I dont think his long stick really makes any damage to his stickhandling. I mean, He might seem like a slow deker, but he gets the job done. You dont have to look like Patty Kane, you dont have to be super fast. He can deke, he just does it differently. Kinda same deal with Datsyuk. Pavel is not superfast with the puck, but he sure as hell does fool anyone with it. And no, I dont mean that Patrik is nowhere as good puckhandler as Dats or Kaner, but I think he is very well puckhandler, even tho he looks bit uncomfortable with the puck due to his long stick.

Long stick is harder to use for deking but it gives more range. Easy comparison is hockey vs floorball, i've played both and the stickhandling difference is huge. Also with long stick it's not easy to keep the puck close to you. Can see some 90s jagr vids for long stick deking, it's not all about speed. Anyhow, Laine is good with his stick.

To me he is the best player in the draft. The question is if both(Laine and Matthews) reach their ceilings, do you pick a generational winger over a very good #1 Center for the next decade.

BPA or draft by position.

Laine has silky hands and he has trained techniques with that extra long stick and he has been comfortable with it for some time. So it is not a problem for him. He actually gets huge advantage from playing with that stick. But even he had adjustment period when moved to it.

In general it is easier to handle the puck the shorter your stick is. This should be obvious to anyone who actually played hockey.

Went to the gold medal party today. When Laine showed up on the stage, the crowd exploded. He is the most talked person in Finland today and already making a legend of himself in his home town. Barkov was huge too, but Laine is just everywhere.

I laughed when I read he was at home watching master chef instead of partying after the game, and didn't even get his pizza that he wanted

It's ironic that he probably didn't get the pizza because he is too good and led Tappara to the gold. I believe there was more people wanting pizza too but the real hero didn't even get it.

Question to people living in Finland. Anyone else in here planning to watch the draft lottery live?

To me it's extremely interesting to see which teams end up in 1-3 positions and I just have to see it live and not get the result spoiled via social media or sport sites. So I'm thinking there must be few people here that think the same way as I do about this and I'd just like to ask how do you plan to watch it?

On free stream sites there are game categories but I don't think there are categories for special events like this, so for that reason I'm afraid I'll miss the live lottery.

Anyways this is what I know so far:
-Draft lottery starts at 30th of April 7:00pm ET
-Finnish time: 1st of May 2:00am

But like I said, big question remains where to see it live in Finland. Perhaps some Canadian site streams it live and it's not geoblocked?

You should be able to find a stream online.

Stream sites put it under their NHL category. I've watched the past two like that.

With how much interest it is going to generate this time around (all Canadian teams having a good chance), the streams will go up.

That is incredibly mature, I for sure would not skip those parties when the whole town is going crazy because of you.

You must mean the town of Mouhijärvi? Here's a picture of Tappara fans going to the celebration in Tampere Central Square. A trip like this takes some dedication:

Laine will have time to party after the World Championships. I hope there'll be a giant celebration in Helsinki on May 23rd.

Ok thanks for the info and yep this year's draft is very special for not only the Finns but Canadians as well with the amount of teams in bottom 14. So good chances for finding a stream easily I hope.

There is a fair to good chance I'll be drinking beer at the time of the lottery. But yes, it'll be interesting to see where the picks end up.

Am I wrong to assume you might also be drinking beer when the actual draft takes place? If so, you sure won't be the only Finn doing so. It's kind of funny that both the lottery and the draft itself for the greatest draft class in Finnish hockey history will take place on days when Finns tend to be absolutely hammered.

Why he has to cut hair if he is a leaf?

Think when he matures a bit and fills up adding muscle: 6'4 220-2230 pounds long blonde haired, bearded monster power forward-sniper. Thats a reason not to cut it. Could be the guy from Vikings tv series.
He will have to cut it. Nylander had similar hair with the Marlies but was forced to cut it when Lou came on board. Also, see Bozak.

Hate Lamoriello's "no long hair"/"no facial hair" rule. Kill's player identities.

Calling already that Laine`s temper problems pop up again when he is forced to cut his hair
edit. And what a ******** rule..

"Very good #1 Center" is arguably better than Eichel. Take a chill pill, Laine isn't a better prospect than Matthews.
