Better at what exactly?

Laine is a more dynamic player who projects as an elite scorer. Matthews is more dimensionl and rounded, but also projects to be an elite offensive player, in a more conventional way.

Both players project to be elite NHL players. It's reasonable to support either player above the other, such are their qualities. Most people in this thread are too close minded, governed by the idea that one is unequivocally better than the other. The reality is scouts will be fairly split on these two. There will be a lot of European scouts who prefer Laine, some who find it really difficult to split, and some who prefer the more traditional Matthews. People need to realise, even if Matthews is the concensus #1, it's close, and many scouts will recognize Laine might have more upside, but Matthews overall is a safer package.

HFboards is so black and white in it's approach, but that isn't how the scouting community works, i'm afraid.

Question to people living in Finland. Anyone else in here planning to watch the draft lottery live?

To me it's extremely interesting to see which teams end up in 1-3 positions and I just have to see it live and not get the result spoiled via social media or sport sites. So I'm thinking there must be few people here that think the same way as I do about this and I'd just like to ask how do you plan to watch it?

On free stream sites there are game categories but I don't think there are categories for special events like this, so for that reason I'm afraid I'll miss the live lottery.

Anyways this is what I know so far:
-Draft lottery starts at 30th of April 7:00pm ET
-Finnish time: 1st of May 2:00am

But like I said, big question remains where to see it live in Finland. Perhaps some Canadian site streams it live and it's not geoblocked?

Get an IP blocker or change your location to Canada and stream it on cbc.ca

Matthews could have played in the NHL this past season.

Not here to defend Laine but he could've too. Actually in Philly he would've had probably a chance at the 1st line with Giroux.

I don't personally like this topic whether Laine is ahead of Matthews or the other way around. They play different style and different position so they are hard to compare. Also playing in Finland doesn't certainly help Laine when it comes to the numbers. FEL is much harder league to play in. Matthews has respected numbers tho.

What we can compare is the play behind the points we see. And at Worlds point totals can be compared better since their playing in the same tournament.

We should discuss who is more NHL ready. Oh wait, no we should not.

Being younger doesn't make you better. Matthews could have played in the NHL this past season.
How much better will AM be in your opinion?

After seeing Malkin`s goal today I thought Laine should train his backhand so he would combine that with his between the legs deke for highlightreel goals.

kunekune make this happen

"Very good #1 Center" is arguably better than Eichel. Take a chill pill, Laine isn't a better prospect than Matthews.

Considering their age difference and the fact that it takes years for taller people until their muscle tendons, ligaments etc catch up bone growth that occurred during growth spurt. Shorter players can often start their NHL careers 2-3 years before taller players because of this (genetics play part on this as well). So the question is, why do you think that taller power forwards have to mature in AHL longer than shorter players? Science, do you even once?

Laine(c) now > Matthews 7 months ago.

Hell no!

Played 40 games,got 49 points (reg+post) (1,22 PPG).
played in a best team of a minor pro league,
was coached by Canadian (Crawford) head coach,
got tons of ice time, very sheltered role.

If he really is that good he should of gotten way more goals
and points in a league like NLA,he should of dominated that league.

He couldn't even elevate his game in the play-offs,
where as Patrik Laine was able to. (in a way better league,
vs way better opponents/players)

I guess you can see into the future. Please tell me who wins the cup this year and next.

In June of 1993, Alexandre Daigle was a better prospect than anyone else, regardless of how things turned out.

People are in love with their shiny new toy. Matthews broke a record set by this year's Art Ross winner.

Way more goals uh?
Lay off the Kool-Aid, league-leading scorer had 26. Matthews had 24 despite missing 28% of his team's games. He had by far the highest GPG avg. in the league.

where as Patrik Laine was able to. (in a way better league,

Unless Matthews has an history of not showing up in the playoffs, you can't use that against him. Beats me how so many people are quick to judge one's "intangibles". You may overlook it, but Matthews still led his team in playoff scoring.

All right. I've just completed my 2016 Liiga playoff highlight package for MVP Patrik Laine.

It features all goals and shift highlights in chronological order. It's a 17-minute package. Enjoy!

I've put up some more insightful videos from all 3 playoff series Laine played. Not just the regular highlight stuff but also some of his hits, passes, defensive plays and shots that didn't make it to the YouTube during playoffs.

Here's the first one from Lukko-series

2nd from the Kärpät-series

And the last one from HIFK-series

Thank you! Great work! Loving the disco! :yo:

Did some calculations by the way:

Laine after the WJC, 40- 19-13-32. 0,8 PPG.

How can Laine be so dominant in those games? I mean it's easier to expect Laine dominating QMJHL games, no doubt but he can dominate FEL games easily which is shocking and interesting at the same time. I have never seen that young and dominant rookie in FEL playoffs.

I have changed my mind about this player. He can play defensively and make dream passes to other players. He didn't play that well in his first liiga games, he didn't play it for the team, only himself.
