Per Gino Reda, Laine "just told me he'd compare Matthews and himself to Toews and Oveckin. Says will take him 5 yrs to be like Ovie"

Really? Comparing himself to one of the game's all time best snipers? I get being confident and he is also overcompensating a bit because of an inferiority complex type thing with Matthews being the best prospect...but it's getting a little silly with statements like this.

Same kid that went off on his coach when he was younger.

Although my team doesn't get a shot at either of these two guys I already preferred Matthews based on the hockey aspect but character-wise it's not looking good for Laine at all. Especially compared to a guy like Matthews.

Also re: his comparison is ironic because while not the intent of his comparison, I hope he realizes Toews has won the cup multiple times and Ovechkin can't get past the 2nd round.

Don't get me wrong, I think Laine's hands are truly special too. If you look at my earlier posts, I think Kovalev has some of the better hands ever, and called them just slightly better than Laine's. Reasonably similar style with lots of their dekes too, I think, and their shots are SO similar. If Laine can become a bigger, more competitive, more physical Kovalev, he'd be an absolute hell of a player, Kovalev was quite the star even with significant issues around a consistent compete level.

Kovalev does have good hands but hm, something... Someone brought up Bure. I think that there's no player better at deking at extreme speeds than Bure. He's something else. Of course, few players can even reach the speeds Bure could.

That sounds conservative. I'd say that on his 3rd season he outscores Ovechkin.

Bench pressing:

Are they not allowed to use leg drive? He could be so much more effective in bench press with a little help in technique. Then again if the goal is to build muscle I'd go for dumbbell bench presses ...

Leg drive and back bending should really be banned in powerlifting IMO. We have tiny, flexible people doing McDonalds back arcs with 2 inch ROM on crazy weights. As for myself, I do bench press with almost the same form as him, feet flat on the ground and only go down to parallel(injured my shoulder twice going down to chest, no TY)

But btw, Dumbbell bench press isn't nearly as good of a compound IMO.

You think the goal of this session was to bulk up?

Ovi also was an elite goalscorer off the bat. 52 in his first season (4 off league lead) and 65 in his 3rd. Ovi didn't take 5 years to be Ovi.

Ovi's first season he was u21, Laine will be u19 next season so his third season is what I'll compare with Ovi's rookie season. Still, the 93 points era-adjusted will certainly be impossible to break. But he can IMO definitely be better than the Ovi of today, especially as Ovechkin is at the age where he'll be more likely to regress.

Atleast he didn't say right away

His dream is to be like Ovy, and score 50 goals, is that wrong?
I doubt he means exact Ovy, but his times Ovy, the best scoring winger.

And if you watch Laine play he has differences to Ovy, in a good way, he plays for the team and doesn't stop skating when he doesn't have the puck, and the bigger the game the more involved he is.

At the beginning of Laine's 3rd season he will be the same age as Ovi was in his rookie season

I think it would be much better for him if he was shy and quiet. I'd rather he say he hopes to score 10 goals in the nhl one day and be just like chris thorburn

Clearly that was a STYLISTIC comparison by Laine, and everyone is losing their **** again. I love the NA people who come out of the bushes screaming and laughing to judge a stylistic comparisons. Happened in Laine threads couple of dozen times.

Actually he'd be 5 months older........ Considering how much stock people put into months here.
Keep up the good work here, namsayin'.

I'm waiting for the day when Laine has silenced most of his critics. Basically scoring goals against their teams.

He has done a good job of it so far and my bet is he will do it again in the future.......I only really care about one physical measurement with Laine.......Can he life the Stanley Cup over his head.

... So wingspan? His head is pretty big.:sarcasm:

Context (paraphrasing):

Reporter: What did you say when teams asked you to compare yourself and Matthews?

Laine: He's better than me at some things and I'm better than him at some things.

Reporter: Which things are you better at?

Laine: Shooting and scoring goals.

....

Reaction on hf: omg did u hear what he said about austen ????

Now he has done it! This guy is toxic and rude, he should drop to the 5th round! What an ego! :sarcasm:

I hope posters would more listen/look at his interviews, instead of just reading his answers.

He's calm, and just answering questions without any extra stuff, he doesn't beat down others in his comments.

He has said his goal is to be the best player in the NHL, he has the drive and he trains towards that, that should be a good thing but here many see that as negative and as that the guy has attitude problems.

This is their last chance to show Gm's who they are and what they have, why would he go there to apologize about everything and saying he's not better than anyone?
Gm's would hate that kind of attitude, they want players with fire, they want players who can deliver and be impact players.

Why on Earth is this again seen as a bad thing?

If Laine thinks he should go #1 and that he'll be the best player, people expect that he doesn't think that he has any strengths over the consensus #1? :/

His confidence makes leaf fans angry. They are on the mindset that Matthews will have the better career no matter what. Oh he said that he has better shot and is better at scoring goals! What an ego!

Exactly which is exactly why Laine's 3rd season is the closest comparable to Ovi's rookie season. Laine at the end of his 2nd regular season would be younger than Ovi in his rookie season.
