He's probably right but then this is why Matthews is considered better than him. There is a LOT more to being a great player than scoring goals. Also why he was sitting out in close games in the WC.
It was actually a Habs fan and a Canucks fan who got most upset about it. But don't let facts get in the way.

The Leafs hold the first pick. If they think Laine will be better they will go with Laine.
I think the real problem here is that quite a few Finnish fans on these forums are delusional in thinking there is a huge conspiracy/bias towards him not being chosen first. You're just pre-preemptively creating an excuse.
Leave the Leafs out of this argument and stay on topic.

He even compliments Matthews on that interview, says he thinks he's good in all 3 zones, compliments his shot, goal scoring, puck protecting and so on, someone forgot to mention that part
I read his Ovy comment as like Ovy he thinks he has a skill that can make him stand out, a rare ability, his shot& ability to score goals, and in his prime has the chance to be among best players in the game, in a time when Ovy is way past his prime/already retired.
So I didn't see that as him claiming he will be as good as Ovy was in his prime, just his days Ovy.
Where as Matthews is good at everything like Toews but is he best at anything?

I like how even though I'm hyping Laine up a ton daily, It's not even as bad as Laine himself!

comparing Laine to the Leafs is like comparing the Leafs to playoff hockey, not much to talk about.
Why are Leaf fans coming over and trolling this thread ?
I'll ask the Finnish fans to temper their expectations of Laine if Maple Leaf fans can stop embarrassing the rest of Canada with the trolling and mocking of anyone they don't think they will draft.

I can see on twitter in Damien Cox's Laine tweets that some people hate him because of his comments. He has "big head" and "I hope he fails" can be seen there.

Well, Laine will be the best player in NHL in a few years and recognizing that is in my opinion not very harmful whereas mocking and such isn't very constructive

Check out that Gino guy tweet. People lost their minds and were immediately stating like Laine was actually Ovy. I hate it when people don't understand what they read and then post stupid comments. I think it was a fair comparison by style with Toews and Ovy. A complete player and a goal scorer with elite shot. And yet people have to bash him.
I like that Laine is not that basic guy (Matthews for example) who says what they expect him to say. *Bill Burr voice* "Yeah uhmm they were obviously better uhmm we didn't play our way uhmm we need to better next time". He's got some charisma and a personality that will sell tickets and flashy style to play which people will enjoy.
He's always come across as a guy who buys into his own hype and is his own biggest fan. That's got nothing to do with Leafs fans, comments like that have been around for quite a while now.

My personal feeling is that the Leafs are going to get an amazing player no matter who they draft. As a Jets fan, I'm just excited that my team has a pick in the top 3. It will be a few years of both players being in the NHL before serious comparisons over which was the better draft pick could be taken seriously.

But of course he is saying practically that in five years he will be better than Ovechkin ever was. He has very clearly said that his aim is to become the best player in the world. That should not really be unclear that he has said that? Ovechkin has never ever been the best player in the world. Best goal scorer yes, but not even close of being the best player.
So Laine saying that he aims to be the best player in the world means that he aims to become a better player than Ovechkin. Nothing wrong with him aiming for being the best player in the world, as he is anyway one of the best U18 player the world has ever seen.

We should try to keep the expectations in controll and more modest untill we see him in the NHL and show his potential there.

I'd like to remind that not all the Leafs fans are haters, there are more quality posters than those, but seeing those tweets is so damm frustrating.
His multiple Hart and Pearson/Lindsay trophy's have something to say about that. Stop with the stupid Finnish homerism. Laine is a tremendous talent with big aspirations, but don't act like the things he says are easy to accomplish.
Being a more accomplished player than ovechkin is almost unheard of. Multiple trophy's and the undisputed best player in the world from 07-10

Laine is a breath of fresh air. He isn't the typical politically correct polite guy and THANK GOD for that. I have no idea why society condemns honesty and personality. Laine says what he believes and doesn't care what people think. Good for him.
