Laine looks to be the tallest of the three but it's interesting how Dubois and Matthews were measured to be the same height when Dubois looks pretty visibly taller in both pictures here.

I always look at the level of their shoulders when comparing height. Gives the most accurate and reliable perception one can make from a picture IMO.

Going by that approach it seems Matthews and Dubois are around the same height while Laine is an inch or two taller.

Matthews was measured the earliest of the three at the combine. You can easily subtract a half inch from his measurement of 6'2.25. He is probably 187cm for most of the day. Dubois is probably 189cm for most of the day and Laine around 192,5cm, at least at the time of the draft.

Dubois looks taller than his listed 6'2. I don't exactly recall where I read it, but I think I saw him listed at 6'3. Regardless, I think the pictures will show Laine is the tallest, Dubois is slightly taller than Matthews. 6'4, 6'3 and 6'2 would be my guess.

Do you have a source for Laine growing? He's listed 6'5 at NHL's website but he was listed that there immediately after the draft for whatever reason. At the combine his afternoon height was 6'3.75". I'm not saying it's impossible, I just haven't seen it being mentioned anywhere.

It's from this article:

https://www.nhl.com/news/finlands-patrik-laine-handling-high-expectations/c-281557646?tid=278386054

"Laine (6-foot-5, 206 pounds) had a breakout showing at the WJC, which was played in Helsinki. He tied for the tournament lead with seven goals, and he had 13 points to help Finland win the gold medal. He was named to the all-tournament team."

Nothing more concrete unfortunately. I was a bit astonished after reading that actually. Thought he was done growing and not really sure if I'd hope for him to get any taller than he is cause if he keeps getting inches, that could ultimately make it harder for him play hockey (since it's not basketball). However, as long as it doesn't affect his puck handling abilities I wouldn't care if Laine turned out 6-foot-7. Maybe he's literally reaching for the clouds.

The kid is going to be a beast after he fills out his frame no doubt about it.

Nylander is listed at 6'0" and Laine only looks about 1-2" taller than him, so it's obviously just distance from the camera in those shots.

Also, are the "it was later in the day" comments serious? That doesn't cause you to lose 1.25". Laine slept until noon or so that day anyway.

Laine is 6'3.75", just like the combine measured. That's fine. He doesn't need to be 6'5" or 6'6" to be great, I hope he stays 6'3" because often the taller guys get the more awkward they are.

I hope he maxes out at anything 6'5'' or below.

Anything more might begin to impede his game.

I actually read that Laine is 6'3.75 instead of was and was about to ask where you got this information. Nevertheless, the NHL combine was in May-June and we are living in September, so will continue to assume he's grown during the summer until measured otherwise. Agreed about not having to be 6 foot 5+ to be great though, he's past that part already.

He's big enough with a long enough reach to create havoc for defensemen. Once he fills out and is at full strength he's going to be really hard for most D to handle.

6'3 is perfect for a winger

It's definitely possible Laine is 194cm, or a bit under 6'4.5, in the morning and loses that 1,5cm during the day. I never argued he was or is 6'5.

I'm using this as reference BTW http://thehockeywriters.com/2016-combine-heights-weights/

What??? All we know is their official measurements. You have no idea about any of this. What if Matthews couldn't sleep and was up walking around all night and laine slept till noon.

Then is Matthews taller
Then 6 2.25?

My hypothesis on Matthews' height is based on the fact that he consistently looks shorter than Pierre-Luc Dubois, while they were measured as being the same height. Maybe Matthews just has poor posture. Or maybe Dubois wears shoes with a higher heel. Or maybe Matthews had an earlier measurement. Who knows for sure.

Why don't we just use their official heights? Isn't that easier?

Yes it's easier. It just may not be accurate enough for my brain. I'm personally very OCD about this stuff, I'm sorry if it bothers you.

Ignoring the fact that's not really what ocd means.....You are providing a source and speculating that a later combine time is somehow indicative of under representing true height. Laine is listed as
Shorter than his originally listed height. Which is attributed to height loss in the day
Instead of an inaccurate original measurement. You obviously didn't read the 4 pm listing where multiple players are actually officially measured as taller than their original height? Explain that. Do you shrink until 3 and grow again?

You are looking for reasons to discredit one and pump up the other and ignoring factual evidence because it discredits one of the many claims about laine that haven't panned out. I like the player but laine fans have a funny understanding of measurement

Here is another pic of Laine with Scheifele from his golf tourney. Mark is 6'3. Laine could possibly be 6'4 looking at this picture. Though I agree it does not matter if he is 6'4 or 6'5 to be the player he can become. I do think if he hits the 6'5 mark, he would be a very unique player at that height and skill compliment. Making this height and size discussion interesting.

Yep. Rulers lie. It couldn't be that mark is clearly leaning over, or on uneven ground or wearing thinner shoes. He was officially measured at 6 3.75 a few months ago by the Nhl after months of speculation and claims
He was close to 6 5
Come on.

Lol this is absurd guys.

Yep. It's nuts. You should see the months of posts where people think they can measure speed in fractions of a second from screen shots.

Ugh. It's so dumb. Just believe the ruler. Laine fans will ignore all forms of facts to suit their objectives. It's not even subjective interpretation of measurements and whether they will effect success at the nhl level.

Ie. Marner is to skinny! Look at Kane!

People are discounting rulers

You forgot it's likely the camera angle. Which would favour Scheifele this time. Regardless of how many pics you may or may not want to discuss or dismiss. Laine is the tallest. We are discussing his height since it was reported he was 6'5 earlier today. I am neither confirming or refuting this mind you. But it would not surprise me if he is 6'4 and continues to grow. This is all. In the Laine thread some of us are truly interested. If you are not you do not have to reply if this topic is 'dumb' as you stated.
