Winnipeg/Finland hockey connection:

Posted on the Jets board.

Forgot all about the Jets tour of Helsinki in 1995, and the game against Laine's old team, Tampere.

Who does Laine line up with in TEAM Finland for the world cup.

For the JETs, he either will line up with Schiefele or Little that will be good for him. though both are not prolific passer.
Wheeler is the best forward passer IMO in the JETS team, though it will be PETAN soon.

Laine, will sure bring a lot to the JETS squad ( the shot) and Connor ( speed ).

Laine will Be on 1st Line(or 2nd how they want to call it) with Barkov and RW.

I have to think you ease him into the line up at the beginning of the year like he did in Liiga last season, we have to remember it took Barkov a year of adjustment in his rookie year. So best take the cautionary route.

Now Laine may be just that good that he won't need the year Barkov needed and this would not surprise me. But ideally when he starts getting more comfortable. I love how a skilled line with incredible size in Scheifele, Wheeler, and Laine and skill would look like on the ice.

Size and skill, play it anyway they want. Would be a wonderful sight to see.

Yep, I love what they are doing, picking up all the major rights to 1 channell.

Small price to pay for that.

It's getting even better. You can buy only Ice hockey, and leave the football out. It'll be even cheaper that way. (and lets face it, football sucks :sarcasm: )

I was at both Jets games. I still remember when Jokerit fan section were cheering for Jets: "Lets go Jets go lets go (clap clap). Jokerit were the hosts but they effed up the system because Tappara and HIFK got to play against Jets. Downtown department store Stockmann was packed of fans when Teemu and Domi were there. I skipped school to go there.

Something new for a while from Laine. He is currently training in Turku like in the last summer. Jets sent their director of fitness to see how goes Laine's training in the offseason. So far he is impressed and he was happy to see the focus being in explosiveness which many people even here addressed the biggest concern for Laine's NHL career.

Laine also gave away a silly interview (well, the questions were kind of silly) but to pick the most important notes:

- He said he had one weekend at summer cottage for his holidays and that's enough. I gotta say I love how serious Laine is about training and resting. Remember when he had just turned 18 and shortly after he won the Finnish Liiga championship and he didn't even go out to party with rest of the team because he knew he had the chance to make it to the WHC team. Guy is pure business nowadays

- He doesn't feel any pressure from the media or anything, he understands it belongs to the business

- Most importantly Laine was asked about the knee injury and whether it did disturb the offseason training. He said after the Combine they "cleaned" it up a bit and it happened at the time he was on his 3 weeks resting season anyway so not much if any training missed. Finally he said the knee feels 100% now

- He is free to train until 5th of September when the World Cup training camp starts

- His mother will travel with him to Winnipeg but his girlfriend doesn't because she still has schools to finish (ladies in Winnipeg, here's your chance)

- Selänne hasn't yet given him any advices but if he does, Laine will listen. Lastly he was asked whether he will score 76 goals in his rookie season like Selänne but Laine just said let's see what's the numbers are after the season and mentioned first he's going to have to make the team

More stuff about Laine's training.

-Physically ready for NHL but could use some strength.
-Has good skating technique and speed.
-Still needs to work on his first few steps which they have been focusing on.
-He's getting close to the best of the training group.
-Atleast on the same level as Korpikoski, Rantanen and Ristolainen at the same age.
-Almost unlimited potential.

Oh no... you didn't!
(...just say that)

"- If Laine compares the group Korpi Lauri rapids, Rasmus Risto crease or Mikko Beach Seen respective ages, he is now their characteristics at least at the same level. Not yet peak levels, but from somewhere must always start.

- Development potential is in any case essentially infinite, Laine openly encouraged at the end of the exercise Rautala estimates."

Google translate really sucks for the Finnish language.

lol that is pretty bad.

Equals:

"If Laine is compared to the guys in the same group, LK, RR and MR at the same age, his "attributes"/"qualities" are AT LEAST on the same level. Still not top notch but you have to start somewhere. Potential for his development seems rather infinite though, said Rautala after the training session"

It does suggest that we are talking strictly about physical qualities.

As for it being "interesting" to see how his skating is, that's not the word I personally would use. It'll be incredible!

I meant like in real soon, like in World Cup. He had the injury but he has time to work out and I'm waiting to see how he's progressed.

I expect he will have got some more explosiveness but this wasnt longest summer for him. All the way to Liiga finals then whc then the world cup and minor injury plus surgery and draft / combine. Some progression will be left for doing later

It's funny with all this talk of Malkin because in alot of ways I have always thought that Laine's game 5v5 reminds me of Malkin. On the PP I get the comparison to Ovechken though.

He had "Some of the greatest progression during a summer ever" last year and that was a 5 week training program. This one's going to be longer.

Of course he's not going to hit his prime for in 1 offseason, it's a longterm project, especially improving the skating but there's no reason to not to expect gains from him after this offseason.

He said his knee injury didnt affect his offseason training plans at all, he was scheduled to take 3 weeks off anyways during that time and the knee is 100% right now, and he is already hitting the same numbers as he was at the end of last years training camp with 5 more weeks to go.

Malkin with Selke defense. Really? How much glue do you need to eat to spout off that line?

Im pretty sure he means that he plays like Malkin but with Selke defense. That doesnt mean that he is going to be of malkins caliber.

Pretty much. Malkin with Selke defence is like the best player in the world, and I don't think AM will reach there.

For Laine, will be interesting to see how is his skating. Soon.

Laine becoming as good as Ovi like most Finnish/Jets fans on here say is far more far fetched than Matthews becoming Malkin with Selke defense.

and he is already hitting the same numbers as he was at the end of last years training camp with 5 more weeks to go.

But does that even make any sense as his trainer said that they have been taking the start slow with relatively light weights... So in spite of that he already is at the same numbers? Hmhm.
