Yes.. September 16-19 in Penticton BC there is a annual young stars tourny and it involves Flames, Jets , Nucks, Oilers

I happened to be in town for one of them a few years back and it's entertaining as hell to watch

Looking fwd to your observations SJ!

Edit: Laine is in the World Cup during those dates. Guess we will see him in the bigger format then.

Laine I believe will be playing in the World Cup for Finland during this years Young Stars tourney, so he won't be part of that group.

Does anyone know who's the youngest player to take part in the World Cup? Wondering if Laine is about to add yet one more record into his resume.

I think Lindros was also 18 when he was picked for Team Canada for the Canada Cup which is essentially today's World Cup.

It's worth noting that Lindros was older than Laine will be in World Cup.

About 1,5 month due to being born in february and not april like Laine. So both will be playing the CC/WC as their first competetive games after being drafted. Even if Laine is younger by default of being born later in the eyar, it´s the same accomplishment in my eyes. An impressive one.

The original question was wondering if Laine could be the youngest world cup participant.

If we are counting Canada Cups, then no. Olyczyk played in the 1984 Canada cup (Took place in September) when his birthday was August 16th.

I was not trying to argue with you, just being more specific as your answer could make on believe there was a years different or so. As in hockey, unlike for example soccer where they count it down to the days, the discussion by how old one is most often ain´t around 1,5 months or days, but either "draft+ year" or going by how old you are when the season begins alá "his 20 year season". Both will play in the CC/WC their +1 draft year and both will play it their 18 y.o. season.

So, Laine should be ready come October. There is no reason to expect less than calder level execution on the ice next season. And lots of goals n flair - n some turnovers and growing pains also. But in general it will be a huge rookie season for the blonde virtuoso. I put my lost credibility at stake here claiming this will be the case. So, i have nada to lose but anyway lol - mark my words once again. When have I been wrong on this forum. Hardly ever!

I'm sure watching Patrik Laine this past season gave more than one person cravings for hot dogs and shampoo.

I think most of you guys doesn't understand how enormous celebrity Patrik Laine is in Finland. He has already experienced all the crazyness that could be coming in NHL.

He has been weekly-basis on cover of biggest newspapers and his every move is reported in magazines and online. Last day he was at a grocery store and it was a very big deal and media reported it every where.

Matthews has been little bit away from the spotlight in Swiss and I think he can't handle the pressure in Toronto. Laine in otherhand knows whats coming and he has lived in that moment for a while. And it helps when he is so flamboyant character on ice and off ice.

Never, ever enjoyed watching one player's FEL season as much. FEL! Not that it's a bad league, cause it isn't, but I never bothered to tune in to watch almost every single Tappara game in the past. Regardless of living in Tampere can hardly say Tappara would be my favourite team. Was really ecstatic about Barkov who was a product of the same organisation and I knew he was going to be a star in the NHL one day. Still watching him just pales compared to Laine. It's like seeing something you haven't seen before - literally, and gets you pumped up. The kid has a bright future ahead. Now I just need to fix my sleep patterns in order to be able to watch atleast some of the Jets games. It's a pain in the ar** for someone who lives in Finland and should have regular day rhythm.

Yeah, Im also bummed that East coast team didn't have #2 pick in the draft. At least that way games on weekend would have been possible to watch. Now I have to stick to highlights :(

Jets play a bunch of their games (including home ones) in the Central time zone, that is only a difference of 1 hour to EST. They'll have more west coast trips but if you were willing to watch east coast games there won't be much difference outside of away games in the pacific.

Viaplay is the way to go, can watch the games anytime you want with damm fine quality, also has World Cup rights.

Best matches to watch in Finland are those weekend special matches that start 1:00 pm EST. For example Flyers play 12 of those in regular season while Jets only get 3.

Games starting 6-7 pm EST end at 05:00 am Finnish time so they screw the sleeping schedule.

Yeah, I have Viaplay.

Their supply is pretty awesome. NHL, KHL, World Cup, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Champions League, Ligue 1, Golf Majors, NFL, Nascar, UFC, Boxing.

And all that for 30 bucks a month. Everyone should buy it.

Yep, I love what they are doing, picking up all the major rights to 1 channell.

Small price to pay for that.

True, any east-coast Canadian team wouldn't of been much better. Leafs never get that weekend time slot either, they are a staple of Saturday Night games at 7 EST, and Raptors own the Sunday afternoon timeslot.

That seems to be a timeslot NBC uses the 2nd half of the year once college football is done for the year because they don't hold NBA or College basketball rights. Your best hope might of been him slipping to Columbus and they don't get too many because they aren't a major market (plus they'd avoid putting them against OSU football the first half of the year). Maybe Buffalo in a year or two if Eichel develops as expected. Really wasn't a great landing spot for you to watch Laine in the lotto.

Yeah there weren't. My preference in Lotto was Buffalo (Eichel+ core + timeslot ) > Edmonton (McDavid) > Toronto (For the most parts I like where they are heading for + tradition + biggest market) > Winnipeg (Good young core) > Columbus ( Jarmo + semigood core).

The Oilers and Sabres were my preferences also (McEichel). The Jets didn't really even cross my mind until the lotto. Now that I think of it, it's actually really good he landed there regardless of the timezone related problems. At the end of the day I don't want Laine to be considered anyone's "product". Scheifele is good but not in the tier of the previously mentioned. Not playing with lets say McDavid, he will get more credit for his accomplishments. Besides, Puljujärvi went there so we now get to re-live the Selänne & Kurri times all over again in a different era!

It definitely seems good the way the draft played out for both Laine abd Pulju, however only young finn that reminds me of Selänne is Tolvanen.

I don't think any of the young Finns are that close to Selanne in regards to skill set. Selanne skating was explosive complimented with good to great hands and shot, with average size with the playing style of a sniper. Neither Laine or Puljujarvi really fit this description. Tolvannen has more of these traits as he has average size and is a sniper, but I'd say the traits are bit reversed. Tolvannen is an elite shooter with a good skating.

I can't really think of a young prospect or player in all of hockey who really reminds me of Selanne right now. Kessel had similar traits but never became close to what Selanne was. Ehlers also does out of younger NHLers in regards to skill sets.
