LW Matthew Boldy - Boston College, NCAA (2019, 12th, MIN)

Boldy is now up to 24 points (9g + 15 ast) and a +7 in 17 AHL games. That’s just under an 82 game pace if 120 points (45g + 75 ast) and a +35.

I hope that we see him up soon. Even if he has an adjustment period at the NHL level I think he’s certainly an upgrade over a few of the guys the Wild regularly play. I would love to see him with Fiala to give him some skill.

He’s too good for the AHL.
I think he gets 6 or 7 more AHL games to get his timing and conditioning back, as well as get more time with Rossi, who is likely to be his teammate for years to come. Guerin has to figure out who to put on waivers, if it comes to that. Pitlick, who he just picked up on waivers at the end of camp, is playing too well, and has to stay on the ice.

Agree that he looks too good for the AHL at this point, but when he comes up I want him getting some PP TOI and playing on a line with some offense to it. Love JEE and his line, but chasing down dump ins is not Boldy's game, nor is being on the 4th line. Playing with Fiala would be perfect.

I think there’s definite room to play with Fiala and play on the PP, at least the second PP right now. I agree that you want him playing with skill. I think Boldy has a chance to really bring some consistency to Fiala’s game as well (at least on the stat sheet) which would be huge for the Wild.

Boldy seems to play a really translatable NHL game, I get there will be mistakes but his shot, size, and creativity in the offensive zone especially around the net is something the Wild need.

Who do you compare Boldy too?

From draft year and NCAA viewing... a left shot sort of Sam Reinhart. He makes people around him better, does things around the net that lead to goals and is responsible all around the ice.

Actually, he reminds me more of another BUF player, Mittelstadt(cue ominous music in the background), albeit a bigger, stronger, reachier, Mittelstadt. Similar hands.

Interesting - from my viewing of Middlestadt I don’t see that comparison. You can see Boldy’s skill level but he’s a lot quieter and purposeful with his stick handling and other movements.

Middlestadt played a lot more like Patty Kane with a bunch of fancy movements and a lot noisier style of play.

I kind of see what both of you are saying. Mittelstadt adapted his game slightly to the NHL lately though and i expect he wouldnt be too far off a ppg this season. Can't wait to see when he comes back. Boldy does have some soft soft hands but mittelstadt's are more dynamic and... flashy? I have a hard time finding a similar player to boldy, he has the frame and reach of a power forward but really nice hands/shot/deflections so he plays a good skill game... hes not a very fast straight skater but great edges, so I ca't think of anyone really matching his playstyle especially since not one player is 100% exactly going to be the same as others... a smaller rantanen ?

Yesh, I agree it’s hard. Maybe Jason Robertson last year from Dallas? Wing version of Toews on the offensive side? Both guys who are decently sized, have good shots/releases, and are pretty skilled puck handlers but generally keep things simple?

Not to derail things, but Mittelstadt is probably coming back from a broken wrist thanks to getting slashed by Gallagher in the Sabres opener. Those things tend to take away from one's shot and faceoff ability, so it is going to put a dent in those areas.

Smaller Rantanen is also solid for Boldy - brain and results remind me of Reinhart, but Matt's edgework is so much beyond what Sam could ever hope to accomplish as a skater. Boldy sort of has a place unto himself comparison-wise.

I agree with all you said regarding boldy.
for mitss it seems him and the sabres are taking their time, i guess i just hope he comes back 100% and with the intensity to help the team after watching them for a quarter of a season !

Hey, it's all opinion until Matt actually gets on the NHL ice and shows what he can do. Hopefully that time is soon, and even then, MN will have to be patient. Very few prospects can do what Sieder, Drysdale, and Raymond are doing.

I actually think he plays a lot like his current GM without the pure scoring touch so far…

I still like the Stone comparison a lot. So smart, great vision, handles the puck really well either with space or without, not the fastest skater, but he's strong and smart so it works, good edges too.

He will be called up here at some point when a forward gets injured, but there is really no rush now especially considering how well the big club is currently playing.

The way MN is playing they will be in no rush to bring him up. Right now, their depth players are killing it. Their two benchwarmers, Rask and Bjugstad, each got goals (and nice ones) in their first game back from sitting. A guy they picked up on waivers, Pitlick(11 career games prior to 2021), has 9 pts. in 12gp. Ryan Hartman is on pace for 50 goals.

You gotta love that as a coach/GM, and be reluctant to mess with it. If Boldy was a C, it might be a different story, but at this point Boldy just has to be patient, keep working on his game, and be ready when an opening comes. He went pointless last game, but still looked excellent, both creating and having tons of scoring chances.
