I think in the perspective of high-end hockey prospects its fairly equally balanced

Even in the top talent (1st round picks) playing in the NCAA in draft rather than draft + 1 is quite rare and some of those are like Eichel that fall in the gap between draft and academic years.

Cases like Vesey where players enter the NCAA in their draft +2 or later years are much more common but not nearly as noticeable because these players are later picks or never get NHL consideration at all.

Seriously guys, it's ruining the thread for some of us. Please consider taking it to PM or start a new thread to debate age/draft year/development year, etc. And I do recall there being threads dedicated to that stuff over the years that you might want to bump. These debates have been going on for as long as I've been a member here and I hate to break it to you, but there are too many variables, you'll never manage to put it in a box perfectly.

Early birthdays playing draft years is rare, but is not unusual. Most elite talent does USNDP route, and stays the whole time, but I do think what Werenski and Hanifin did is going to become a lot more common. College basketball sees a couple big re-classifications a year (Andrew Wiggins, and Towns for example).

Can't wait to see what Connor can do at the WC, which other players have made this jump, the only ones I can think of are Toews, Trouba and Eichel. While Ryan Murray did it out of the WHL.

Would be remiss to not mention Kyle Connor got his first point against Pros against Team Canada yesterday.

First of many I am sure.

A US player to watch in today's game, Connor to play on TSN in 5 Mins for those that don't have a chance to see this exceptional College player.

They should put him on Matthews wing. See if they can develop some chemistry throughout the tournament.

The Jets have a real good one here in Connor. Nice to see a viewing of him at this level. 2 of his 1st 3 shifts he could have had 2 assists already. 2 quality set ups.

...and an absolutely gorgeous feed to Matthews for the goal. Matthews and Connor are going to be fantastic on the Jets. :naughty:

I thought Connor had a very good game today. You can see he has all the skills to be an impact NHL player. Needs to fill out more, and it looks like he has already. But he makes things happen out there. Not easy for a College player to step into a level like this. 2 points, 2 games.

Watched 4 of his games this year.....Connor has a very well rounded offensive package - good skater, excellent vision and puck sense....and has big-time hands - lightning quick release on his shot....

This kid is going to make some noise.

Oh Boston.

A talent such as this just fell into the Jets lap.
He's made more teams than Boston look bad. Not like Guryanov is looking too good right now. Next year will be interesting, getting a top 6 winger role on the Jets is going to be a battle.

Don't forget the Oilers, who traded away #16 and #33 for Griffin Reinhart, even though they knew that both Barzal and Connor were available to them. They could have ended up with Barzal or Connor plus Aho. Either of those would net a very good D in a trade now.

Agreed. I think Connor will have to start on the 3rd line. Our top two lines might be....

Laine-Little-Wheeler
Perreault-Scheifele-Ehlers

Jack Eichel put up 7 points in 10 games in WCs last year. I wonder if Connor can meet or exceed that (yes yes I know he's a year older). So far 2 points in 2 games, interestingly he's doing that while getting 4th line ice time at ~10 min/gm. The

He hasn't made any team look bad yet, he has done nothing. He has two points at the WHC while a Bruins player has three and he was a free agent signing and has proven himself at the pro level. People get a bit excited a little to early. Let's wait a few years til he makes the NHL, he is not making it next season.

Yes I am Bruins fan, big deal. Until this guy proves something a the next level, we should lighten the excitement a bit. We are not talking McDavid, Matthews or Eichel here. He looked out of place against Canada and yesterday was better but competition was lesser. Let's see what he does tomorrow against Finland. Personally I hope he has a successful career, but I usually wish that for all these young players, but to read some of the "scouting reports" on here, if I had not watched the games myself I would be wondering why he wasn't selected first overall. Watch some of the NHL playoffs and ask yourself how he would make out there, not very well, he has lots of growing to do. He is probably two years away from playing for the Jets, when you take into account what they already have.
